Description

Latin name of the genus and species: Begonia×tuberhybrida.

Variety denomination: ‘BBEWH12-0’.

BACKGROUND OF THE INVENTION

The new cultivar is a product of a chance discovery. The new variety originated as a chance, whole plant mutation from the, unpatented, variety Begonia×tuberhybrida ‘Karels Jomfru Rød’ The new variety was discovered by the inventor, Ola Ingvoldstad, a citizen of Norway, at a research greenhouse in Brummendal, Norway during 2008, among a planting of the parent variety.

Asexual reproduction of the new cultivar ‘BBEWH12-0’ was first performed in Norway in 2009. ‘BBEWH12-0’ has since produced several generations by vegetative cuttings and has shown that the unique features of this cultivar are stable and reproduced true to type.

SUMMARY OF THE INVENTION

The cultivar ‘BBEWH12-0’ has not been observed under all possible environmental conditions. The phenotype may vary somewhat with variations in environment such as temperature, day length, and light intensity, without, however, any variance in genotype.

The following traits have been repeatedly observed and are determined to be the unique characteristics of ‘BBEWH12-0.’ These characteristics in combination distinguish ‘BBEWH12-0’ as a new and distinct Begonia×tuberhybrida cultivar:

    • 1. Abundance of semi-double white flowers
    • 2. Bright, glossy green foliage
    • 3. Short period for plants to begin flowering
    • 4. Flexible plant stems, resisting breakage.
    • 5. Outwardly facing flowers.
    • 6. Many lateral branches per plant.

PARENT COMPARISON

Plants of the new cultivar ‘BBEWH12-0’ are similar to plants of the parent variety, Begonia×tuberhybrida ‘Karels Jomfru Rød’ in most horticultural characteristics. However, plants of the new cultivar ‘BBEWH12-0’ produce semi-double flowers, compared to fully double flowers. Additionally, the new variety flowers one week sooner from a rooted cutting than the parent, and produces a white flower, compared to a red flower.

COMMERCIAL COMPARISON

Plants of the new cultivar ‘BBEWH12-0’ are similar to plants of the unpatented commercial variety, Begonia×tuberhybrida ‘White Multiflora’ in most horticultural characteristics. However, plants of the new cultivar ‘BBEWH12-0’ produce more flexible branches, brighter green glossier foliage and more flowers per plant. The new cultivar also produces more lateral branches than the comparator.

Plants of the new cultivar ‘BBEWH12-0’ are similar to plants of the unpatented commercial variety, Begonia×tuberhybrida ‘Chanson White’ in most horticultural characteristics. However, plants of the new cultivar ‘BBEWH12-0’ produce more flexible branches, brighter green, glossier foliage and more flowers per plant.

BRIEF DESCRIPTION OF THE PHOTOGRAPH

The accompanying photograph in FIG. 1 illustrates in full color a typical plant of ‘BBEWH12-0’ grown in a greenhouse. The pot size is a commercial 10 inch basket. The plant shown is approximately 9 months old.

FIG. 2 illustrates a close-up view of the flowers and foliage. The photograph was taken using conventional techniques and although colors may appear different from actual colors due to light reflectance it is as accurate as possible by conventional photographic techniques.
