Description

Genus and species: Potentilla fruticosa.

Variety denomination: ‘Kupinpa’.

BACKGROUND OF THE NEW PLANT

The present invention comprises a new and distinct variety of Potentilla plant, botanically known as Potentilla fruticosa and hereinafter referred to by the variety name ‘Kupinpa’. ‘Kupinpa’ is the result of a naturally occurring whole-plant mutation in the summer of 2006, in the nursery of the Applicant, in Amstelhoek, the Netherlands, of the parent plant ‘Pink Beauty’ (U.S. Plant Pat. No. 9,874). A single plant selection was subsequently chosen for further evaluation and asexual propagation.

‘Kupinpa’ was first propagated via softwood cuttings in the summer of 2006 and has been asexually reproduced by softwood cuttings in Amstelhoek, the Netherlands for over four generations. ‘Kupinpa’ has been found to retain its distinctive characteristics through successive asexual propagations via softwood cuttings.

Plant Breeder's Rights for this variety were applied for in Europe on Nov. 4, 2009. ‘Kupinpa’ has not been sold or made publicly available more than one year prior to the filing date of this application.

SUMMARY OF THE INVENTION

The following are the most outstanding and distinguishing characteristics of this new variety when grown under normal horticultural practices in Amstelhoek, Netherlands.

    • 1. Eye-catching deep pink flowers; and
    • 2. Semi-double flowers.

DESCRIPTION OF THE PHOTOGRAPHS

This new Potentilla plant is illustrated by the accompanying photographs which show overall plant habit including blooms, buds, and foliage of the plant; the colors shown are as true as can be reasonably obtained by conventional photographic procedures.

DESCRIPTION OF THE NEW VARIETY

The following detailed description sets forth the distinctive characteristics of ‘Kupinpa’. The data which define these characteristics were collected from asexual reproductions carried out in Amstelhoek, the Netherlands. The plant history was taken in September of 2010 on 2 year old plants grown outdoors in 2 liter containers. Color readings were taken under natural light. Color references are primarily to The R.H.S. Colour Chart of The Royal Horticultural Society of London (R.H.S.) (5th edition 2007).

DETAILED BOTANICAL DESCRIPTION OF THE NEW PLANT

COMPARISON WITH PARENT AND COMMERCIAL VARIETIES

‘Kupinpa’ differs from the parent plant ‘Pink Beauty’ (U.S. Plant Pat. No. 9,874) by having a narrow, upright, and compact growth habit, while ‘Pink Beauty’ has a broad, upright, and semi-compact growth habit. Additionally, ‘Kupinpa’ has deep pink semi-double flowers, while ‘Pink Beauty’ has light pink single flowers.

‘Kupinpa’ differs from ‘UMan’ (U.S. Plant Pat. No. 12,258) by having deep pink semi-double flowers, while ‘UMan’ has single bi-colored flowers which are a deep yellow with an orange-red color radiated outward from the center.

1. A new and distinct variety of Potentilla fruticosa plant named ‘Kupinpa’ as described and shown herein.
