A new and distinct Begonia tuberhybrida cultivar named ‘KERBESPIROS’ is disclosed, characterized by rose pink colored, strongly fragrant flowers. Plants are semi-upright, free-branching with excellent weather tolerance. The new variety is a Begonia, and is normally used as an ornamental garden or container plant.

Description

Latin name of the genus and species: Begonia tuberhybrida.

Variety denomination: ‘KERBESPIROS’.

BACKGROUND OF THE INVENTION

The new cultivar is the product of a planned breeding program. The new variety originated as the result of a crossing performed during September 2015 of Begonia ‘Fragrant Blush’ (unpatented) with the pollen parent, a proprietary variety of Begonia tuberhybrida referred to as ‘05-355-19’. The selection of the new variety was made in July 2016, by the inventor at a research greenhouse located in Cambridge, UK.

Asexual reproduction of the new cultivar ‘KERBESPIROS’ was first performed at a research greenhouse located in Cambridge, UK by terminal vegetative cuttings during July 2016. ‘KERBESPIROS’ has since produced multiple generations by vegetative cuttings and has shown that the unique features of this cultivar are stable and reproduced true to type.

SUMMARY OF THE INVENTION

The cultivar ‘KERBESPIROS’ has not been observed under all possible environmental conditions. The phenotype may vary somewhat with variations in environment such as temperature, day length, and light intensity, without, however, any variance in genotype.

The following traits have been repeatedly observed and are determined to be the unique characteristics of ‘KERBESPIROS’. These characteristics in combination distinguish ‘KERBESPIROS’ as a new and distinct Begonia tuberhybrida cultivar:

    • 1. Semi-trailing plant habit.
    • 2. Strongly fragrant flowers.
    • 3. Rose pink flower color.
    • 4. Free branching.
    • 5. Medium flower size.
    • 6. Excellent weather tolerance
    • 7. Suitability for pot sizes 12 cm and larger.

PARENT COMPARISON

Plants of the new cultivar ‘KERBESPIROS’ are similar to plants of the seed parent variety in most horticultural characteristics. However, plants of the new cultivar ‘KERBESPIROS’ differ in the following:

    • 1. Flowers of the new variety are rose pink, flowers of the seed parent are cream with pink blush.
    • 2. Plants of the new variety have a semi-trailing habit, plants of the seed parent are more upright.
    • 3. Stems of the new variety are smaller in diameter than the seed parent.
    • 4. Plants of the new variety branch more abundantly than the seed parent.

Plants of the new cultivar ‘KERBESPIROS’ are similar to plants of the pollen parent variety in most horticultural characteristics. However, plants of the new cultivar ‘KERBESPIROS’ differ in the following:

    • 1. Flowers of the new variety are rose pink, flowers of the pollen parent are orange.
    • 2. Flowers of the new variety are strongly fragrant, flowers of the pollen parent are unscented.

COMMERCIAL COMPARISON

Plants of the new cultivar ‘KERBESPIROS’ are similar to plants of the commercial variety, Begonia ‘Fragrant Falls Apricot Improved’, in most horticultural characteristics. However, plants of the new cultivar ‘KERBESPIROS’ differ in the following:

    • 1. Flowers of the new variety are rose pink, flowers of this comparator are apricot colored.
    • 2. Flowers of the new variety are smaller than those of this comparator.
    • 3. Plants of the new variety are significantly more free branching than this comparator.
    • 4. Plants of the new variety are semi-upright, plants of this comparator are upright, then lodging over with age.

Plants of the new cultivar ‘KERBESPIROS’ are similar to plants of the commercial variety, Begonia ‘77WL Peach’, U.S. Plant Pat. No. 12,786, in most horticultural characteristics. However, plants of the new cultivar ‘KERBESPIROS’ differ in the following:

    • 1. Flowers of the new variety are rose pink, flowers of this comparator are apricot colored.
    • 2. Flowers of the new variety are smaller than those of this comparator.
    • 3. Plants of the new variety are significantly more free branching than this comparator.
    • 4. Plants of the new variety are semi-upright, plants of this comparator are upright, then lodging over with age.

The present invention of a new and distinct variety of Calendula is shown in the accompanying photographs, the colors being as nearly true as possible with color photographs of this type.

In the following description, color references are made to The Royal Horticultural Society Colour Chart 2001 except where general terms of ordinary dictionary significance are used. The following observations and measurements describe ‘KERBESPIROS’ plants grown in a commercial controlled greenhouse in Cambridge, United Kingdom. Measurements and numerical values represent averages of typical plant types.

  • Temperature tolerance: The new variety tolerates temperatures from approximately 5° to 35° C.
  • Other features: Excellent weather tolerance.
