Botanical designation: Helleborus X ericsmithii.

Cultivar denomination: ‘JHE00202’.

BACKGROUND OF THE INVENTION

The present invention relates to a new and distinct cultivar of Helleborus plant, botanically known as Helleborus X ericsmithii and hereinafter referred to by the name ‘JHE00202’. Helleborus X ericsmithii is a hybrid between Helleborus niger and Helleborus X sternii.

The new Helleborus plant is a product of a planned breeding program conducted by the Inventor in Oostkamp, Belgium. The objective of the breeding program was to create new early-flowering Helleborus plants with attractive plant habit and flowers.

The new Helleborus plant originated from a cross-pollination conducted by the Inventor in Oostkamp, Belgium in 2011 of a proprietary selection of Helleborus niger identified as code number 6032, not patented, as the female, or seed, parent with Helleborus X sternii ‘Flame’, not patented, as the male, or pollen, parent. The new Helleborus plant was discovered and selected by the Inventor as a single flowering plant from within the progeny of the stated cross-pollination grown in a controlled greenhouse environment in Oostkamp, Belgium in November, 2014.

Asexual reproduction of the new Helleborus plant by in vitro meristem propagation in a controlled environment in Lochristi, Belgium since August, 2016 has shown that the unique features of this new Helleborus plant are stable and reproduced true to type in successive generations.

SUMMARY OF THE INVENTION

Plants of the new Helleborus have not been observed under all possible combinations of environmental conditions and cultural practices. The phenotype may vary somewhat with variations in environmental conditions such as temperature and light intensity without, however, any variance in genotype.

The following traits have been repeatedly observed and are determined to be the unique characteristics of ‘JHE00202’. These characteristics in combination distinguish ‘JHE00202’ as a new and distinct Helleborus plant:

    • 1. Compact, upright and mounding plant habit.
    • 2. Moderately vigorous growth habit and moderate growth rate.
    • 3. Dark green-colored leaves.
    • 4. Early and freely flowering habit.
    • 5. Single light yellow green-colored flowers.
    • 6. Good garden performance.

Plants of the new Helleborus differ primarily from plants of the female parent selection in flower color as plants of the female parent selection have pure white-colored flowers.

Plants of the new Helleborus differ primarily from plants of the male parent, ‘Flame’, in plant habit as plants of the new Helleborus are more compact and denser than plants of ‘Flame’.

Plants of the new Helleborus can be compared to plants of Helleborus X ericsmithii (Helleborus niger X Helleborus sternii) ‘COSEH 860’, disclosed in U.S. Plant Pat. No. 23,773. In side-by-side comparisons, plants of the new Helleborus differ primarily from plants of ‘COSEH 860’ in the following characteristics:

    • 1. Plants of the new Helleborus flower about one month earlier than plants of ‘COSEH 860’.
    • 2. Leaves of plants of the new Helleborus are not as serrated as leaves of plants of ‘COSEH 860’.

Plants of the new Helleborus can also be compared to plants of Helleborus X nigercors ‘Candy Love’, disclosed in U.S. Plant Pat. No. 19,413. In side-by-side comparisons, plants of the new Helleborus differ primarily from plants of ‘Candy Love’ in the following characteristics:

    • 1. Plants of the new Helleborus are more compact and denser than plants of ‘Candy Love’.
    • 2. Plants of the new Helleborus flower about two to three months earlier than plants of ‘Candy Love’.
    • 3. Leaves of plants of the new Helleborus are not as serrated as leaves of plants of ‘Candy Love’.

BRIEF DESCRIPTION OF THE PHOTOGRAPHS

The accompanying colored photographs illustrate the overall appearance of the new Helleborus plant showing the colors as true as it is reasonably possible to obtain in colored reproductions of this type. Colors in the photographs may differ slightly from the color values cited in the detailed botanical description which accurately describe the colors of the new Helleborus plant.

DETAILED BOTANICAL DESCRIPTION

The aforementioned photographs and following observations, measurements and values describe plants grown during the autumn and early winter in 17-cm containers in a shadehouse in Lochristi, Belgium and under cultural practices typical of commercial Helleborus production. During the production of the plants, day temperatures ranged from 5° C. to 26° C. and night temperatures ranged from 5° C. to 18° C. Plants were 15 months old when the photographs and the description were taken. In the following description, color references are made to The Royal Horticultural Society Colour Chart, 2015 Edition, except where general terms of ordinary dictionary significance are used.

  • Botanical classification: Helleborus X ericsmithii ‘JHE00202’.

      • Female, or seed, parent.—Proprietary selection of Helleborus niger identified as code number 6032, not patented.
      • Male, or pollen, parent.—Helleborus X sternii ‘Flame’, not patented.

      • Time to initiate roots, summer.—About six weeks at temperatures about 20° C.

      • Root description.—Medium in thickness, fleshy; typically brown with white-colored root tips, actual color of the roots is dependent on substrate composition, water quality, fertilizer type and formulation, substrate temperature and physiological age of roots.
      • Rooting habit.—Moderately freely branching; medium density.

      • Plant and growth habit.—Herbaceous perennial; compact, upright and mounding plant habit with flowers held within and above the foliar plane; plant shape is roughly flattened globular; moderately vigorous growth habit and moderate growth rate.

      • Seeds and fruits.—Seed and fruit development have not been observed on plants of the new Helleborus to date.
  • Garden performance: Plants of the new Helleborus have been observed to have good garden performance and to tolerate rain, wind and high temperatures about 35° C. and to be suitable for USDA Hardiness Zones 5 to 9.
  • Pathogen & pest resistance: Plants of the new Helleborus have not been observed to be resistant to pathogens and pests common to Helleborus plants.
