Description

Latin name of the genus and species of the plant claimed: Pelargonium interspecific.

Varietal denomination: ‘PEQZ0064’.

BACKGROUND OF THE NEW PLANT

The present invention comprises a new Pelargonium, botanically known as Pelargonium interspecific, and hereinafter referred to by the variety name ‘PEQZ0064’.

‘PEQZ0064’ is a product of a planned breeding program. The new cultivar ‘PEQZ0064’ has bright red colored intlorescences held above the dark green foliage, heat and drought tolerant on a semi-trailing plant habit.

‘PEQZ0064’ originates from a hybridization in a controlled breeding program made in February 2011, in a greenhouse in Amatitlán, Guatemala. The female parent was an unpatented, proprietary plant of P. interspecific parentage, identified as ‘k04-9123-2’ with single scarlet red colored florets when compared to ‘PEQZ0064’.

The male parent of ‘PEQZ0064’ was an unpatented, proprietary plant of P. peltatum parentage, identified as ‘PEL-095067-02’ with more pink colored florets and a more open plant habit when compared to ‘PEQZ0064’. The resultant seed was sown in December 2011.

‘PEQZ0064’ was selected as one flowering plant within the progeny of the stated cross in April 2012 in a greenhouse in Enkhuizen, The Netherlands.

The first act of asexual reproduction of ‘PEQZ0064’ was accomplished when vegetative cuttings were propagated from the initial selection in the May 2012 in a greenhouse in Enkhuizen, The Netherlands.

BRIEF SUMMARY OF INVENTION

Horticultural examination of plants grown from cuttings of the plant initiated in June 2012 in Enkhuizen, the Netherlands, and continuing thereafter, has demonstrated that the combination of characteristics as herein disclosed for ‘PEQZ0064’ are firmly fixed and are retained through successive generations of asexual reproduction.

‘PEQZ0064’ has not been observed under all possible environmental conditions. The phenotype may vary significantly with variations in environment such as temperature, light intensity, and day length.

A Plant Breeder's Right for this cultivar has not yet been applied for. ‘PEQZ0064’ has not been made publicly available prior to the effective filing date of this application, notwithstanding any disclosure that may have been made less than one year prior to the effective filing date of this application by the inventor or another who obtained ‘PEQZ0064’ directly from the inventor.

The following traits have been repeatedly observed and are determined to be the basic characteristics of the new variety. The combination of these characteristics distinguishes this Pelargonium as a new and distinct variety.

BRIEF DESCRIPTION OF THE PHOTOGRAPHS

The accompanying photographic drawings show typical flower and foliage characteristics of ‘PEQZ0064’ with colors being as true as possible with an illustration of this type.

The photographic drawings in FIG. 1 shows a basket with 4 flowering plants of the new variety and

FIG. 2, a close-up of the flower.

DETAILED BOTANICAL DESCRIPTION

The plant descriptions and measurements were taken in Andijk, The Netherlands in September under natural light. These plants were approximately 12 weeks old and were grown in a 1 gallon pots, in a greenhouse trial. The plants shown in the photographs were about 26 weeks old growing in a 10 inch pot in a greenhouse. The photographs were taken in October 2018.

Color references are made to The Royal Horticultural Society Colour Chart (R.H.S.) 2001.
