A new and distinct Hibiscus plant having yellow colored flowers with a dark colored throat and eye zone that last for several days on the plant.

Description

Botanical classification: Hibiscus rosa-sinensis.

Varietal denomination: ‘JBG AH-21’.

BACKGROUND OF THE INVENTION

The present invention comprises a new and distinct Hibiscus plant having the varietal name ‘JBG AH-21’. The new variety is the result of a planned breeding program with the purposes of developing Hibiscus rosa-sinensis plants that exhibit pathogen resistance, multi-day flowers with unique coloration, and possess desirable production traits. ‘JBG AH-21’ is the result of a cross conducted in Grand Saline, Tex. between Hibiscus rosa-sinensis varieties ‘JBG 14007’ (female parent, U.S. Plant Pat. No. 31,302) and ‘JBG 15010’ (male parent, unpatented). The new variety was selected in December of 2016 in Grand Saline, Tex. and the first asexual reproduction of the new variety was conducted by semi-hardwood cuttings in February of 2017 in Grand Saline, Tex. ‘JBG AH-21’ has been trial and field tested and has been found to retain its distinctive characteristics and remain true to type through successive propagations. The present invention has not been evaluated under all possible environmental conditions. The phenotype may vary with variations in environment without a change in the genotype of the plant.

‘JBG AH-21’ is similar to both parents in having a yellow toned main flower color with contrasting throat and eye zone colors, as well as having flowers that stay open on the plant for three days. ‘JBG AH-21’ differs from its female parent in that the new variety exhibits more branching, greater vigor, and darker shades of flower colors. ‘JBG AH-21’ differs from its male parent in that the new variety has a more mounded plant habit, exhibits better branching, and lacks white colored eye zone extensions.

When ‘JBG AH-21’ is compared to Hibiscus rosa-sinensis variety ‘JBG 14002’ (U.S. Plant Pat. No. 30,580), both varieties exhibit dark green colored foliage, a high degree of disease resistance, and multi-day, yellow toned flowers with a dark throat color. However, the flowers of ‘JBG AH-21’ are smaller in size, greater in number, and have petals that are slightly more ruffled around the apex. Further, ‘JBG AH-21’ exhibits a more mounded growth habit and more branching than ‘JBG 14002’.

The following traits distinguish ‘JBG AH-21’ as a new and distinct cultivar from other Hibiscus varieties known to the breeder:

• • 1. Multi-branched, mounded habit, with a high bud count;
  • 2. Yellow colored, textured flowers with a dark throat and bleeding eye zone;
  • 3. High degree of disease resistance, particularly to bacterial leaf spot (Pseudomonas spp.);
  • 4. Multi-day flowers; and
  • 5. Dark green colored and glossy foliage.

DESCRIPTION OF THE PLANT

The following detailed description sets forth the characteristics of the new variety. The plants were grown in a greenhouse heated to a minimum of 16° C. and covered with 33% black shade cloth. The color readings and measurements were taken in the fall in Grand Saline, Tex. under natural light on approximately six months old plants that were grown in 24.0 cm diameter containers. Color references are primarily to The 1995 R.H.S. Colour Chart of The Royal Horticultural Society of London, 3^rd Edition, except where general color terms are used.
