Description

Latin name of the genus and species: Lagerstroemia indica.

Variety denomination: ‘HOCH1099’.

BACKGROUND OF THE INVENTION

The new Lagerstroemia cultivar is a product of a planned breeding program conducted by the inventor, in Moshav Bitzaron, Israel. The objective of the breeding program was to develop new Crepe Myrtle plants for ornamental purposes. The open-pollination resulting in this new variety was made during July of 2015.

The seed parent is the unpatented proprietary variety referred to as Lagerstroemia ‘L103’. The pollen parent unidentified. The new variety was selected in August of 2016 by the inventor in a group of seedlings resulting from the 2014 open-pollination, in a nursery in Moshav Bitzaron, Israel. Date of first sale was Jan. 1, 2020, occurring in Europe. This sale was made directly by the inventor or one who obtained the claimed invention directly or indirectly from the inventor. This sale and all public disclosures made between Jan. 1, 2020 and the filing of this application fall within the exception allowed under 102(b)(1).

Asexual reproduction of the new cultivar was performed by softwood cuttings. This was first performed at the same nursery in Moshav Bitzaron, Israel during June of 2017, and has shown that the unique features of this cultivar are stable and reproduced true to type in multiple successive generations.

SUMMARY OF THE INVENTION

The cultivar ‘HOCH1099’ has not been observed under all possible environmental conditions. The phenotype may vary somewhat with variations in environment such as temperature, day length, and light intensity, without, however, any variance in genotype.

The following traits have been repeatedly observed and are determined to be the unique characteristics of ‘HOCH1099’ These characteristics in combination distinguish ‘HOCH1099’ as a new and distinct Lagerstroemia cultivar:

  • 1. Red-Purple blooms near 67D.
  • 2. Green foliage near 136C.
  • 3. Bushy plant habit, reaching 60 to 80 cm in the second year.

PARENT COMPARISON

Plants of the new cultivar ‘HOCH1099’ are similar to plants of the seed parent in most horticultural characteristics; however, plants of the new cultivar ‘HOCH1099’ differ in the following;

  • 1. The new variety has red-purple flowers, while the seed parent has purple flowers.

The pollen parent cannot be identified as the new variety is the result of an open-pollination.

COMMERCIAL COMPARISON

Plants of the new cultivar ‘HOCH1099’ are comparable to the commercial variety Lagerstroemia ‘Purple Velvet’, unpatented. The two Lagerstroemia varieties are similar in most horticultural characteristics, however, the new variety ‘HOCH1099’ differs in the following;

  • 1. The new variety has red-purple blooms; this comparator has purple blooms.
  • 2. The new variety has darker green leaves.

Plants of the new cultivar ‘HOCH1099’ are comparable to the commercial variety Lagerstroemia ‘Rhapsody in Pink’, U.S. Plant Pat. No. 16,616. The two Lagerstroemia varieties are similar in most horticultural characteristics; however, the new variety ‘HOCH1099’ differs in the following;

  • 1. The new variety has red-purple blooms, while this comparator has pink blooms.
  • 2. The new variety has lighter green foliage than this comparator.

BRIEF DESCRIPTION OF THE PHOTOGRAPH

The accompanying photograph illustrates a typical flowering plant of ‘HOCH1099’ grown outdoors in Moshav Bitzaron, Israel. The photograph was taken using conventional techniques and although colors may appear different from actual colors due to light reflectance it is as accurate as possible by conventional photographic techniques.
