plant named ‘GFNHSRP’
A new and distinct cultivar of Hibiscus plant named ‘GFNHSRP’ is disclosed, characterized by reddish-pink colored flowers with a large, deep red “eye”. Plants have upright, columnar, narrow habits. The new variety is a Hibiscus, typically produced as an ornamental plant.
Latin name of the genus and species: Hibiscus syriacus.
Variety denomination: ‘GFNHSRP’.
BACKGROUND OF THE INVENTIONThe new Hibiscus cultivar is a product of a naturally occurring branch mutation of the variety Hibiscus syriacus ‘Gandini van Aart’, U.S. Plant Pat. No. 28,892. The new cultivar was found and selected by the inventor in the summer of 2018 in Stone County, Miss.
Asexual reproduction of the new cultivar ‘GFNHSRP’ was first performed in the summer of 2019 in Stone County, Miss., by softwood cuttings. Subsequent propagation has shown that the unique features of this cultivar are stable and reproduced true to type in successive generations.
Date of first sale was Jun. 21, 2022, occurring in Grand Haven, Mich. This sale was made directly by the inventor or one who obtained the claimed invention directly or indirectly from the inventor. This sale and all public disclosures made between Jun. 21, 2022, and the filing of this application fall within the exception allowed under 102(b)(1).
SUMMARY OF THE INVENTIONThe cultivar ‘GFNHSRP’ has not been observed under all possible environmental conditions. The phenotype may vary somewhat with variations in environment such as temperature, day length, and light intensity, without, however, any variance in genotype.
The following traits have been repeatedly observed and are determined to be the unique characteristics of ‘GFNHSRP’. These characteristics in combination distinguish ‘GFNHSRP’ as a new and distinct Hibiscus cultivar:
-
- 1. Reddish-pink colored flowers with a large, deep red “eye”.
- 2. “Eye” of flower extends to around 50% of each petal surface.
- 3. Upright and columnar/narrow habit.
Plants of the new cultivar ‘GFNHSRP’ are similar to the seed parent Hibiscus ‘Gandini van Aart’, in most horticultural characteristics. However, characteristics of the new cultivar differ in the following:
-
- 1. Flowers of the new variety are reddish-pink with a large, deep red “eye”. Flowers of the seed parent are pure white.
Plants of ‘GFNHSRP’ are similar in some horticultural characteristics to the variety Hibiscus ‘Gandini Santiago’, U.S. Plant Pat. No. 25,568. The new variety, however, differs in the following:
-
- 1. Flowers of the new variety are darker reddish-pink with a large, deep red “eye”. Flowers of this comparator are lighter, purplish-pink with a large, deep-red “eye.”
