plant named ‘SCBE01’
A new and distinct cultivar of Scabiosa plant named ‘SCBE01’ is disclosed, characterized by floriferous plants with very low, compact habits, and vigorous growth. The new variety is a Scabiosa, suitable for outdoor garden and container uses.

Latin name of the genus and species: Scabiosa columbaria x japonica.
Variety denomination: ‘SCBE01’.
BACKGROUND OF THE INVENTIONThe new Scabiosa cultivar is a product of a planned breeding program conducted by the inventor. The objective of the breeding program was to produce floriferous new Scabiosa varieties with low, mounding habits. The crossing resulting in this new variety was made during 2013, at a nursery in Gwangju-si, South Korea.
The seed parent is an unpatented, propriety variety of Scabiosa columbaria. The pollen parent is an unpatented, propriety variety of Scabiosa japonica. The new variety was discovered in 2015 by the inventor in a group of seedlings resulting from the 2013 crossing, at the same nursery in Gwangju-si, South Korea.
Asexual reproduction of the new cultivar ‘SCBE01’ was first performed by vegetative cuttings during 2013, in Gwangju-si, South Korea. Subsequent propagation has shown that the unique features of this cultivar are stable and reproduced true to type in multiple successive generations.
SUMMARY OF THE INVENTIONThe cultivar ‘SCBE01’ has not been observed under all possible environmental conditions. The phenotype may vary somewhat with variations in environment such as temperature, day length, and light intensity, without, however, any variance in genotype.
The following traits have been repeatedly observed and are determined to be the unique characteristics of ‘SCBE01’. These characteristics in combination distinguish ‘SCBE01’ as a new and distinct Scabiosa cultivar:
-
- 1. Very low, compact plant (groundcover), no growth regulators needed.
- 2. Floriferous; one plant produces over 50 flowers.
- 3. Rapid, vigorous growth.
Plants of the new cultivar ‘SCBE01’ are similar to plants of the seed parent, in most horticultural characteristics, however, plants of the new cultivar ‘SCBE01’ differ in the following;
-
- 1. Plants of the new variety are not as tall as plants of the seed parent.
- 2. The new variety produces more flowers and flower stems than the seed parent.
- 3. Flowers of the new variety are smaller than flowers of the seed parent.
Plants of the new cultivar ‘SCBE01’ are similar to plants of the pollen parent, in most horticultural characteristics, however, plants of the new cultivar ‘SCBE01’ differ in the following;
-
- 1. Plants of the new variety are smaller than plants of the pollen parent.
- 2. The new variety produces more flowers and flower stems than the pollen parent.
- 3. The new variety grows faster than the pollen parent.
Plants of the new cultivar ‘SCBE01’ can be compared to the commercial variety Scabiosa ‘Butterfly Blue’, unpatented. These varieties are similar in most horticultural characteristics; however, ‘SCBE01’ differs in the following:
-
- 1. Plants of the new variety are not as tall as plants of this comparator.
- 2. Flower stems of the new variety are stronger than flower stems of this comparator.
- 3. Flowers of the new variety are smaller than flowers of this comparator.
- 4. The new variety produces more flowers than this comparator.

DETAILED BOTANICAL DESCRIPTIONIn the following description, color references are made to The Royal Horticultural Society Mini Colour Chart 2005 except where general terms of ordinary dictionary significance are used. The following observations and measurements describe ‘SCBE01’ plants grown in a greenhouse in Waddinxveen, The Netherlands, under natural lighting. Measurements were taken during April of 2016. The plants were approximately 18 weeks old. The growing temperature ranged from approximately 12° C. to 35° C. during the days, 4° C. to 28° C. during the nights. Measurements and numerical values represent averages of typical plant types.
