plant named ‘LOCORA3519’

- Lommerse Holding B.V.

A new and distinct Lewisia plant named ‘LOCORA3519’ which is characterized by a symmetrical and naturally compact rosette of narrowly oblanceolate foliage, with an abundance of vibrant red-purple flowers held in cyme inflorescences above the rosette, and flowering within the first year of growth without vernalization, as well as the stability of these characteristics from generation to generation.

Description

Latin name of the genus and species: The Latin name of the genus and species of the novel variety disclosed herein is Lewisia cotyledon.

Variety denomination: The inventive variety of Lewisia disclosed herein has been given the variety denomination ‘LOCORA3519’.

BACKGROUND OF THE INVENTION

Parentage: ‘LOCORA3519’ is a seedling selection resulting from the open-pollination of a cultivated population of Lewisia cotyledon ‘103510/A’ (not patented), a cultivar developed and owned by the inventor. The crossing occurred in approximately April of 2010 at a plant breeding facility in Mariahout, the Netherlands. In the summer of 2012, one plant that resulted from said open-pollination was observed to exhibit improved vigor and flowering in the first year of growth, without the requirement of vernalization. The seedling was isolated for further evaluation in order to confirm the distinctness and stability of the characteristics first observed. Upon confirmation of distinctness and stability, ‘LOCORA3519’ was selected for commercialization.

Asexual Reproduction: Asexual reproduction of the new cultivar ‘LOCORA3519’, by way of meristematic tissue culture, was first initiated in June of 2012 at a plant tissue culture laboratory in The Netherlands. The unique features of this cultivar have proven to be stable and true to type, through numerous generations, beginning in 2012.

SUMMARY OF THE INVENTION

The cultivar ‘LOCORA3519’ has not been observed under all possible environmental conditions. The phenotype may vary somewhat with variations in environment such as temperature, day length, and light intensity, without, however, any variance in genotype. The following traits have been repeatedly observed and are determined to be the unique characteristics of ‘LOCORA3519’. These characteristics in combination distinguish ‘LOCORA3519’ as a new and distinct Lewisia cultivar:

    • 1. ‘LOCORA3519’ exhibits improved plant vigor with a relatively short, one-year crop cycle as opposed to a two-year crop cycle; and
    • 2. ‘LOCORA3519’ exhibits narrowly oblanceolate foliage, arranged in a symmetrical, naturally compact rosette that is produced without the aid of plant growth regulators; and
    • 3. ‘LOCORA3519’ exhibits flowering within the first year of growth, without vernalization; and
    • 4. ‘LOCORA3519’ exhibits cymes held above the rosette which bear vibrant red-purple flowers; and
    • 5. ‘LOCORA3519’ exhibits a floriferous bloom habit with flowers present from late June through early August.

BRIEF DESCRIPTION OF THE FIGURES

FIG. 1 illustrates, as nearly true as it is reasonably possible to make the same in color photographs of this type, an exemplary plant of ‘LOCORA3519’ in flower, grown in a greenhouse in Mariahout, The Netherlands. This plant is approximately 12 months old and is shown planted in a 14 cm container.

FIG. 2 illustrates, as nearly true as it is reasonably possible to make the same in color photographs of this type, the typical foliage of ‘LOCORA3519’.

FIG. 3 illustrates, as nearly true as it is reasonably possible to make the same in color photographs of this type, the typical inflorescence of ‘LOCORA3519’.

BOTANICAL DESCRIPTION OF THE PLANT

The following observations and measurements made in September of 2023 describe averages from a sample set of six specimens of 12-month-old ‘LOCORA3519’ plants grown in 14 cm nursery containers at a commercial greenhouse in Mariahout, the Netherlands. Plants were produced under full sun exposure, with minimal subsurface irrigation, no fertilizer application, and no chemical pest and disease control measures. No photoperiodic treatments or artificial light was given to the plants.

Those skilled in the art will appreciate that certain characteristics will vary with older or, conversely, with younger plants. ‘LOCORA3519’ has not been observed under all possible environmental conditions. Where dimensions, sizes, colors and other characteristics are given, it is to be understood that such characteristics are approximations or averages set forth as accurately as practicable. The phenotype of the variety may differ from the descriptions set forth herein with variations in environmental, climatic and cultural conditions. Color notations are based on The Royal Horticultural Society Colour Chart, The Royal Horticultural Society, London, 2015 (sixth edition).

A botanical description of ‘LOCORA3519’ and comparisons with the parent plants and closest known comparator are provided below.
