Latest NOVA PERENNE BV Patents:
Botanical classification: Silene virginica.
Variety denomination: ‘Sil005’.
BACKGROUND OF THE INVENTIONThe present invention relates to a new and distinct cultivar of Silene virginica and will be referred to hereafter by its cultivar name ‘Sil005’. ‘Sil005’ represents a new perennial grown for landscape and container use.
The Inventor discovered the new cultivar in June of 2022 as a young potted plant that derived from tissue culture of ‘Jackson Valentine’ in Heerhugowaard, The Netherlands, and therefore assumed to be a naturally occurring chimeral mutation of Silene ‘Jackson Valentine’ (not patented).
Asexual propagation of the new cultivar was first accomplished by tissue culture using meristematic tissue under the direction of the Inventor in Heerhugowaard, The Netherlands in August of 2022. Asexual propagation by tissue culture has determined that the characteristics of the new cultivar are stable and are reproduced true to type in successive generations.
SUMMARY OF THE INVENTIONThe following traits have been repeatedly observed and represent the characteristics of the new cultivar. These attributes in combination distinguish ‘Sil005’ as a unique cultivar of Silene.
-
- 1. ‘Sil005’ exhibits a tall plant height.
- 2. ‘Sil005’ exhibits abundant shoot production.
- 3. ‘Sil005’ exhibits foliage that is dark green in color.
- 4. ‘Sil005’ exhibits a very floriferous blooming habit.
The female parent of ‘Sil005’ differs from ‘Sil005’ in having a shorter plant height, less production of shoots, leaves that are lighter green in color, and a less floriferous blooming habit. ‘Sil005’ can be most closely compared to Silene ‘Fire Pink’ (not patented). ‘Fire Pink’ is similar to ‘Sil005’ in flower color. ‘Fire Pink’ differs from ‘Sil005’ in having weaker stems, a shorter plant height, leaves that are lighter green in color, and a much less floriferous blooming habit.
The accompanying color photographs illustrate the overall appearance and distinct characteristics of the new Silene. The photographs were taken of a 15-month-old plant of ‘Sil005’ as grown in a 19-cm container in an unheated greenhouse in Heerhugowaard, The Netherlands.

DETAILED BOTANICAL DESCRIPTIONThe following is a detailed description of 15-month-old plants of ‘Sil005’ as grown in 19-cm containers in an unheated greenhouse in Heerhugowaard, Netherlands. The phenotype of the new cultivar may vary with variations in environmental, climatic, and cultural conditions, as it has not been tested under all possible environmental conditions. The color determination is in accordance with The 2015 Colour Chart of The Royal Horticultural Society, London, England, except where general color terms of ordinary dictionary significance are used.
