A new and distinct cultivar of Rudbeckia plant named ‘Dahlonega’, characterized by its tall and upright plant habit; vigorous growth habit; freely branching habit; sturdy flowering stems; numerous large single-type inflorescences with golden yellow-colored ray florets with dark brown-colored disc florets; and relative resistance to Septoria Leafspot.
A provisional U.S. Patent application was filed by the Inventor/Applicant, Richard Saul, on May 30, 2024, serial number 63/653,417. Priority is claimed to this application.
Botanical designation: Rudbeckia fulgida var. sullivantii.
Cultivar denomination: ‘DAHLONEGA’.
BACKGROUND OF THE INVENTIONThe present invention relates to a new and distinct cultivar of Rudbeckia plant, botanically known as Rudbeckia fulgida var. sullivantii, and hereinafter referred to by the name ‘Dahlonega’.
The new Rudbeckia plant is a product of a planned breeding program conducted by the Inventor in Dahlonega, Georgia. The objective of the breeding program is to develop new vigorous and freely flowering Rudbeckia plants with large inflorescences with unique and intense ray floret coloration.
The new Rudbeckia plant originated from an open-pollination in Dahlonega, Georgia of Rudbeckia fulgida var. sullivantii ‘Goldsturm’, not patented, as the female, or seed, parent with an unknown proprietary selection of Rudbeckia fulgida var. sullivantii, as the male, or pollen, parent. The new Rudbeckia plant was discovered and selected by the Inventor as a single flowering plant from within the progeny of the stated open-pollination grown in a controlled greenhouse environment in Dahlonega, Georgia in August, 2016.
Asexual reproduction of the new Rudbeckia plant by in vitro meristem culture in a controlled environment in Dahlonega, Georgia since April, 2018 has shown that the unique features of this new Rudbeckia plant are stable and reproduced true to type in successive generations.
SUMMARY OF THE INVENTIONPlants of the new Rudbeckia have not been observed under all possible combinations of environmental conditions and cultural practices. The phenotype may vary somewhat with variations in environmental conditions such as temperature and light intensity, without, however, any variance in genotype.
The following traits have been repeatedly observed and are determined to be the unique characteristics of ‘Dahlonega’. These characteristics in combination distinguish ‘Dahlonega’ as a new and distinct Rudbeckia plant:

- 2. Vigorous growth habit.
- 3. Freely branching habit.
- 4. Sturdy flowering stems.
- 5. Numerous large single-type inflorescences with golden yellow-colored ray florets with dark brown-colored disc florets.
- 6. Relatively resistant to Septoria Leafspot.
Plants of the new Rudbeckia can be compared to plants of the female parent, ‘Goldsturm’. Plants of the new Rudbeckia differ primarily from plants of ‘Goldsturm’ in the following characteristics:

- 1. Plants of the new Rudbeckia are taller and more vigorous than plants of ‘Goldsturm’.
- 2. Plants of the new Rudbeckia are more freely flowering than plants of ‘Goldsturm’.
- 3. Plants of the new Rudbeckia are more resistant to Septoria Leafspot than plants of ‘Goldsturm’.
Plants of the new Rudbeckia can be compared to plants of Rudbeckia fulgida var. sullivantii ‘Goldblitz’, not patented. In side-by-side comparisons, plants of the new Rudbeckia differ primarily from plants of ‘Goldblitz’ in the following characteristics:

- 1. Plants of the new Rudbeckia are taller and more vigorous than plants of ‘Goldblitz’.
- 2. Plants of the new Rudbeckia are more freely flowering than plants of ‘Goldblitz’.
- 3. Plants of the new Rudbeckia are more resistant to Septoria Leafspot than plants of ‘Goldblitz’.
The accompanying photographs illustrate the overall appearance of the new Rudbeckia plant showing the colors as true as it is reasonably possible to obtain in colored reproductions of this type. Colors in the photographs may differ slightly from the color values cited in the detailed botanical description which accurately describe the colors of the new Rudbeckia plant.

The aforementioned photographs and following observations and measurements describe plants grown during the late winter and spring in one-gallon containers in a glass-covered greenhouse in Carleton, Michigan and under cultural practices typically used in commercial Rudbeckia production. During the production of the plants, day and night temperatures ranged from 20° C. to 22° C. Plants were 21 weeks old when the photographs and description were taken. In the following description, color references are made to The Royal Horticultural Society Colour Chart, 2015 Edition, except where general terms of ordinary dictionary significance are used.

- Pathogen & pest resistance: To date, plants of the new Rudbeckia have been observed to be relatively resistant to Septoria Leafspot (Septoria rudbeckiae). Plants of the new Rudbeckia have not been shown to be resistant to pests and other pathogens common to Rudbeckia plants.
- Garden performance: Plants of the new Rudbeckia have been observed to tolerate rain and wind. Plants of the new Rudbeckia have been observed to tolerate temperatures ranging from about 15° C. to 38° C.
