Abstract

A new and distinct cultivar of Petunia plant named ‘Balslincheel’, characterized by its red and yellow bicolored flowers, medium, green-colored foliage, trailing, mounded growth habit, is disclosed.

Description

Latin name of genus and species of plant claimed: Petunia x hybrida.

Variety denomination: ‘Balslincheel’.

BACKGROUND OF THE INVENTION

The present invention relates to a new and distinct cultivar of Petunia plant botanically known as Petunia x hybrida and hereinafter referred to by the cultivar name ‘Balslincheel’.

The new cultivar originated in a controlled breeding program in Arroyo Grande, California during July 2020. The objective of the breeding program was the development of Petunia cultivars with novel coloration and have a compact-mounded growth habit.

The new Petunia cultivar is the result of cross-pollination. The female (seed) parent of the new cultivar is SlingShot Heartwheel ‘Balslinteel’, not patented, characterized by its medium pink and white flowers, medium, green-colored foliage, moderately vigorous and compact-mounded growth habit. The male (pollen) parent of the new cultivar is the proprietary Petunia x hybrida breeding selection coded PET-01317-01, not patented, characterized by its medium pink-purple flowers, medium, green-colored foliage, moderately vigorous and compact-mounded growth habit. The new cultivar was selected as a single flowering plant within the progeny of the above stated cross-pollination during March 2021 in a controlled environment in Guadalupe, California.

Asexual reproduction of the new cultivar by terminal stem cuttings since March 2021 in Guadalupe, California and West Chicago, Illinois has demonstrated that the new cultivar reproduces true to type with all of the characteristics, as herein described, firmly fixed and retained through successive generations of such asexual propagation.

SUMMARY OF THE INVENTION

The following characteristics of the new cultivar have been repeatedly observed and can be used to distinguish ‘Balslincheel’ as a new and distinct cultivar of Petunia plant:

• • 1. Bright red and yellow bicolored flowers;
  • 2. Medium green-colored foliage;
  • 3. Medium vigorous with a mounded, trailing growth habit.

Plants of the new cultivar differ from plants of the female and male parents primarily in having red and yellow bicolored flowers.

Of the many commercially available Petunia cultivars, the most similar in comparison to the new cultivar is SlingShot Lemonberry ‘Balslinlemb’, not patented. However, in comparison, plants of the new cultivar differ from plants of ‘Balslinlemb’ in at least the following characteristics:

• • 1. Plants of the new cultivar have lighter, red-colored flowers than plants of ‘Balslinlemb’;
  • 1. Plants of the new cultivar have flowers with more yellow coloration on the mid-vein than plants of ‘Balslinlemb’,
  • 3. Plants of the new cultivar has lighter, green foliage than plants of ‘Balslinlemb’.

BRIEF DESCRIPTION OF THE PHOTOGRAPHS

The accompanying photographs show, as nearly true as it is reasonably possible to make the same in color illustrations of this type, typical flower and foliage characteristics of the new cultivar. Colors in the photographs may differ slightly from the color values cited in the detailed description, which accurately describes the colors of ‘Balslincheel’. The approximately 5-month-old plants were grown in 6-inch pots for approximately 17 weeks in a greenhouse in West Chicago, Illinois.

DETAILED BOTANICAL DESCRIPTION

The new cultivar has not been observed under all possible environmental conditions to date. Accordingly, it is possible that the phenotype may vary somewhat with variations in the environment, such as temperature, light intensity, and day length, without, however, any variance in genotype.

The chart used in the identification of colors described herein is The R.H.S. Colour Chart of The Royal Horticultural Society, London, England, 2015 edition, except where general color terms of ordinary significance are used. The color values were determined in April 2025 under natural light conditions in West Chicago, Illinois.

The following descriptions and measurements describe approximately 5-month-old plants produced from cuttings from stock plants and grown in a double polyethylene under conditions comparable to those used in commercial practice. The plants were grown in West Chicago, Illinois in 6-inch pots for approximately 4 weeks utilizing a soilless growth medium: Plants were pinched two weeks before transplant. Greenhouse temperatures were maintained at approximately 65° F. to 70° F. (18.3° C. to 21.1° C.) during the day and approximately 60° F. to 65° F. (15.6° C. to 18.3° C.) during the night. Supplemental lighting was used. Measurements and numerical values represent averages of typical plants.
