Patent number: RE29008Abstract: An electronic apparatus and method suitable for automatic machine interrogation of individuals for identifying persons such as those seeking admittance to secure areas or seeking an extension of credit. Acoustical wave energy is applied by an oscillator and transducer to the person's body, such as one end of an arm. Another transducer contacts another body part, such as the other end of the arm, to receive the body-transmitted energy. The frequency response characteristics of the body part are then detected by suitable correlation means to determine the amplitude and phase transfer functions. Comparison of a previously known transfer function of a person with a subsequently measured transfer function permits a machine decision whether the functions represent the same person.Type: GrantFiled: August 4, 1975Date of Patent: October 19, 1976Assignee: Novar Electronics CorporationInventor: James H. Patent number: 3986227Abstract: In a xerographic printing system the toned copy paper is fused by the pressure nip formed by a hot roll and a backup roll. A scraping blade engages the destructible surface of the backup roll at a critical angle which is selected as a function of the coefficients of friction of the backup roll's surface and the toner/debris contamination that may be collected on the backup roll's surface. As a result, the blade slides freely on the roll's surface, but does not slide on the surface of the toner/debris contamination film. This film forms a locking angle with the blade, placing the blade in stress, and developing a film removing chisel-like action therewith.Type: GrantFiled: May 19, 1975Date of Patent: October 19, 1976Assignee: International Business Machines CorporationInventors: Rex D. Patent number: 3986251Abstract: A method for bonding a gallium-type light emitting diode (LED) to a metallized substrate interconnection member, such as, a header, or a strip. An LED wafer is subjected to premetallizing backside processing in order to prepare the surface for a metallizing deposition step. During metallization, the backside wafer is deposited with a gold-germanium or gold-silicon alloy. Thereafter, the wafer is heated in forming gas in order to alloy the gold-germanium or gold-silicon first layer to the wafer backside. Then, a second layer of gold-germanium or gold-silicon is evaporated over the alloyed first layer. The LED chip or die is then eutectically die bonded to a metallized substrate.Type: GrantFiled: October 3, 1974Date of Patent: October 19, 1976Assignee: Motorola, Inc.Inventors: Raymond L. Patent number: 3986252Abstract: Apparatus for assembling a generally annular member in gripping engagement and generally coaxially about a selected position on a shaft. The apparatus has a pair of means conjointly and relatively movable axially with respect to the shaft and operable generally for guiding the member generally coaxially onto an end portion of the shaft and for driving the member therealong to its selected position. Means is movable in one of the guiding and driving means and mounted generally in universal movement relation to the other of the guiding and driving means for seating the member and for accommodating coaxial misalignment of the member in the event thereof upon its engagement with the shaft, and means is provided for resiliently resisting the universal movement of the seating and accommodating means to compensate for the coaxial misalignment of the member.Type: GrantFiled: April 8, 1975Date of Patent: October 19, 1976Assignee: General Electric CompanyInventor: John M. Brunschwig

Patent number: 3986253Abstract: Disclosure is made of a universally fitting electrical insulator for mounting between the armature shaft and the windings and laminations of an armature. The disclosure is also of a method for mounting the insulator in the armature. The insulator and method are particularly useful in the production of double insulated electrical hand tools.Type: GrantFiled: September 5, 1975Date of Patent: October 19, 1976Assignee: Niemand Bros. Inc.Inventor: Robert L. Harris

Patent number: 3986254Abstract: A preassembled strain gauge unit includes a housing having a resilient material therein. At least one strain sensing element is connected to the resilient material. Installation of the strain gauge unit is accomplished by applying adhesive to the strain sensing element and then fastening the housing to a surface with the adhesive between the surface and the strain sensing element. The resilient material is particularly designed to function as a spring during the adhesive curing period to apply a force to the strain sensing element during such adhesive curing period. In addition, the resilient material provides a seal for minimizing contact of moisture and air with the strain sensing element.Type: GrantFiled: October 9, 1974Date of Patent: October 19, 1976Assignee: Consearch ABInventor: Kjell Nordstrom

Patent number: 3986255Abstract: Gold alloy bumps are built up upon conductive pads formed upon electronic chips. The bumps are thereafter aligned with conductive portions of a generally larger substrate to which the chips are to be electrically connected. The bumps are produced by either vacuum evaporating or plating metallic layers over the conductive chip pad areas wherein certain layers within the bumps are formed of magnetic metals such as cobalt or nickel cobalt alloys. Metallic layers of gold and alloying metal are evaporated or plated over the deposited magnetic metals to complete the formation of the bumps. The chips are thereafter subjected to a sufficient amount of heat to cause the bumps to flow, thereby to form a reliable electrical connection between the chips and the substrate. The magnetic materials formed within the bumps result in ease of transporting and manipulating the chips for further processing by means of magnetic plates or other pickup devices.Type: GrantFiled: November 29, 1974Date of Patent: October 19, 1976Assignee: Itek CorporationInventor: Robert P. Patent number: 3986256Abstract: A wire positioning adapter for dressing wires from a multi-conductor cable to transverse terminal locations is disclosed. The adapter is used with a standard semi-automatic insertion apparatus which simultaneously attaches a pair of conductors to oppositely facing terminals. The adapter moves along a linear path with respect to the connector. Wires are laced across a wire positioning surface between the cable end and the terminals. The wires are allowed to longitudinally slip across this surface during movement of the adapter.Type: GrantFiled: November 17, 1975Date of Patent: October 19, 1976Assignee: AMP IncorporatedInventors: Jerry Blanton Kilpatrick, John James Tucci
