  • Patent number: 4002056
Abstract: A device for determining the rheological properties of a fluid comprises a pair of cooperating members, the working face of each member defining parallel discrete ridges or flutes, the outermost portions of which define ridge lines, the ridges of one member being crossed with respect to the ridges of the other member. A fluid sample is applied to the working face of one member and the working faces are pressed together so that the ridge lines of one member intersect the ridge lines of the other member at a matrix of points and so that volume increments of the fluid sample are defined. The contact surface area of the fluid sample with the substrate is substantially greater than the surface area of the general interface between the working faces. The force required to separate the fluid at the general interface defines the rheological properties of the fluid with improved accuracy.

  • Patent number: 4002058
Abstract: Method and apparatus for applying controlled electromagnetic force to a test specimen such as a turbine bucket to induce vibration in the specimen. The force is applied by means of an electromagnetic field produced by an electromagnet. A controlled power source supplies current to the electromagnet to maintain the applied force at a predetermined magnitude over a predetermined range of frequencies. A comparator controls the power source in response to a sensor signal representative of the frequency and magnitude of the face actually applied so as to maintain at a minimum the difference between this signal and a reference signal representative of a desired frequency and magnitude. Tuning means are provided to nullify capacitive reactance of the electromagnet which would otherwise tend to limit the current supplied by the power source as frequency is increased.

  • Patent number: 4002061
Abstract: A capacitance-type transducer used for the measurement of bending strains test elements which are not sufficiently strong to support a strain element or for test elements in which a strain element would strengthen the test element and not give an accurate test. The transducer is formed by a spring wire which has a portion perpendicular to the test specimen with a U-shaped end extending from the perpendicular portion. One portion of the U-bend has an insulator about the wire where the insulator parallels the test specimen surface and is in contact therewith. The end of the wire has a flat conductive plate secured thereto with the flat plate parallel with the specimen. The spacing between the flat plate and the specimen forms the capacitance spacing which changes as the specimen is strained in a direction perpendicular to the flat plate. The distance between the flat plate and specimen is represented by a change in capacitance which is measured by an oscilloscope.

  • Patent number: 4002068
Abstract: A level-sensitive system responsive to the level of liquid in a container is provided. A level-sensitive device, e.g. a gauge or pressure switch, is connected by a line to a lower portion of the container. Gas, specifically air, is supplied to the line under pressure sufficient to enable the gas to pass slowly into the container and to bubble upwardly, thereby keeping the liquid out of the line and away from the level-sensitive device. The flow of the gas is sufficiently slow that it does not affect the operation of the level-sensitive device. A liquid such as water also can be supplied to the line under pressure to flow into the container. The quantity of the water is also maintained small enough so as not to affect the operation of the level-sensitive device. The water is effective to prevent growth of fungus or the like in the liquid of the container which otherwise can form adjacent the line leading into the container and block the line after a period of time.

The slicer includes a rotary vertical slicing blade located in the path of movement of clusters past the slicer at the nominal location of the proof line and a fixed aligner having a heel portion with a curved bow and divergent flanks located upstream of the blade with plates extending from the heel portion to either side of the blade and beyond the downstream edge of the blade so the blade is fitted in a slot between the plates. As clusters are moved toward the aligner the open crease above the proof line is moved adjacent the heel portion of the aligner so that the flanks engage the buns and assure that the proof line between the buns is held in alignment with the fixed blade so that the vertical slit extends along the actual proof line.

  • Patent number: 4002092
Abstract: A novel compound angle cutting edge configuration on a die rule, slitter blade, hollow punches, shearing blades, etc. provides cleaner cuts on stock material with less tonnage, improved cutting and cleaner cuts. The die rule cutting edge includes a plurality of side by side notches on only one side of the cutting edge defining a plurality of equally spaced piercing points. A primary cutting edge extends from each piercing point substantially to a next adjacent piercing point and forms a compound angle with an imaginary line through the tips of the piercing points of between about one and fifteen degrees. In use, the cutting edges are axially pressed through stock material to cut blanks of predetermined configuration. The cutting action consists of the piercing points penetrating the material and then the primary cutting edges slicing the stock material from one penetration point, substantially linearly and unidirectionally, to the next adjacent penetration point.

Abstract: The provision in a conventional punch press of a cyclicly-operable transfer mechanism which is adapted to be bolted to the stationary die shoe of the press in between successive forming stations and has associated with it a pair of blank-gripping jaws which travel generally in web line fashion between first and second stations for blank-transferring purposes while at the same time rotating so that each blank is reversed from end to end upon completion of the transfer operation. During the transfer, the jaws swing or revolve in a circular path about a vertical axis so that directional reversal of the jaws accounts for a major portion of the blank displacement.

  • Patent number: 4002094
Abstract: A metal saw is mounted upon a tippable arm above a table and is lowered to cut a work piece on the table. The saw and the tippable frame supporting it are mounted upon a vertically axised swing arm which has its vertical axis extending upwardly through the table in the plane of the saw blade and adjacent to the saw shaft. The tippable arm and the swing arm are laterally offset from the plane of the blade to permit the blade to be swung from a normal crosscut position perpendicular to a longitudinal edge of the table to selected angular positions and to a ripping position parallel to the edge of the table. The portion of the table immediately below the saw blade is formed as a disc which includes a slot wherein the edge of the saw may drop and which is axised to the swing arm to rotate with the swing arm and saw.

  • Patent number: 4002096
Abstract: This disclosure pertains to a novel wind instrument having a range of two octaves. Seven lettered note keys, starting with C, each can be individually depressed to produce a tone. An octave bar, when simultaneously depressed, produces the corresponding tone in the next higher octave. Scale programming buttons, when once depressed, select a sharp, natural, or flat tone which is now produced when depressing the lettered note key, in accordance with the composition's key signature. Means are provided to quickly reset the program by first making all lettered note keys natural and upon further simple manipulation, selection of the new scale program may be obtained. To avoid disturbing the program set by the scale buttons, a group of buttons provides tones in an accidental register which, upon their depression, will produce accidental notes not included in the main key.

  • Patent number: 4002100
Abstract: A metal expansion anchor sleeve is made by forming an elongated flat sheet metal blank so that it has a longitudinal slot extending inwardly from one of its ends and dividing it into two sections which are connected at the other end and which are each provided with a projecting tongue located in the region of the one end. Each tongue is thereupon bent back onto the respective blank section so that its free end moves through more than 180.degree., the bending being over a radius equal to at least half the thickness of the blank. The blank is then arcuately bent transversely to the elongation of the slot and formed into an externally substantially cylindrical expansion anchor sleeve having an inner longitudinal passage which, due to the presence of the tongues, diverges in direction away from the one end, i.e., converges towards the one end which is the leading end of the sleeve.
