  • Patent number: 4143554
Abstract: An ultrasonic scanner for producing a sector scan in an object to be examined in which one or more ultrasonic transducers traverse an arcuate path with respect to a reflector which is positioned to receive the ultrasonic waves scanning the surface of the reflector from each of the transducers and converge such waves at a point of a preselected distance in front of the reflector. In general, the ultrasonic waves are converged at a point outside the scanner and inside the object to produce a sector scan in the object having its center at the convergence point. In one embodiment of the scanner the reflector only partially reflects the ultrasonic waves and an additional stationary transducer is provided which is positioned to produce ultrasonic waves which radiate through the reflector and coincide with one of the lines of the sector scan, thus permitting simultaneous M-mode or pulse Doppler echo information to be obtained in perfect registration with the sector scan lines.

  • Patent number: 4143568
Abstract: Web cutting apparatus employs a rotary knife cylinder with elongated, radially outwardly projecting knife blade assemblies spaced around its periphery. A rotary anvil cylinder spaced parallel to the knife cylinder carries a corresponding peripheral array of elongated anvils. When the two cylinders rotate, the knife blades bear against the anvils at the nip between the two cylinders. The knife blade assemblies are flexible and resilient so that each blade edge is biased against its anvil at the instant of interference, with a local force sufficient to cut web. Further, the natural frequency of the knife assemblies is selected to be considerably higher than those of the other machine parts so that the spacing between the knife blades and the anvils at the nip is substantially unaffected by vibrations of those parts. Also the apparatus efficiently removes trim strips produced by the web cuts.

  • Patent number: 4143597
Abstract: A plurality of circumferentially extending mounting recesses are formed in a cylinder assembly and arcuate saddle members having marking means, such as print type, on their outside surface are mounted in the recesses. Each saddle member has a locking recess formed in its inside surface with a pair of spaced apart, flexible locking wires extending therethrough. Mounting studs having a mounting head with a relatively narrow neck portion are affixed to the cylinder within the mounting recesses. The saddle members may be mounted within the mounting recesses by snap-on engagement of the mounting head with the locking wires, and readily removed by snap-off disengagement of the head with the wires. The saddle members may thus be readily replaced and interchanged by means of the snap-on, snap-off mounting and demounting.

  • Patent number: 4143599
Abstract: Improved power and free trolley apparatus includes independent pusher and hold back dogs positively moved to an accumulate position by a counterweighted actuating lever moving to an accumulate position. The dogs, however, are self-biased, the pusher dog self-locking in its drive position, and the dogs are not interlocked with the lever. They move independently of the lever into operative position when the lever is moved into a non-actuating position and out of blocking relationship with the dogs. The actuating lever counterweight defines a trolley brake for preventing excessive trolley bounce back during accumulation. Another aspect of the invention includes a movable cam selectively raising a drive dog in a trailing trolley for switching, and permitting accumulation of trolleys through a switch zone when held in an inoperative position as when the switch zone is choked.

  • Patent number: 4143603
Abstract: A moisture-containing viscous secondary fuel is combusted in the chamber of an industrial furnace by comminuting the secondary fuel to a particle size of 5-50 mm and propelling the particles at an initial speed of 1-10 m/sec. onto a layer of intensely burning primary fuel, such as solid refuse, coal or wood. The particles are propelled from a level at 0.5-2 m above the burning layer and in such a way that the length of their flight spans is 0.2-2 m. This insures that the particles retain moisture during travel in the combustion chamber and do not agglomerate prior and/or subsequent to contacting the burning layer of primary fuel. The rate of admission of comminuted secondary fuel is regulated in dependency on changes of temperature in the chamber, in dependency on changes of the CO.sub.2 or O.sub.2 content of combustion products and/or in dependency on variations of a parameter (e.g., length) of the burning layer of primary fuel.
