  • Patent number: 4168629
Abstract: In apparatus for ultrasonic examination of an object, the echoes derived at successive positions of an ultrasonic transducer are digitized and subtracted one from the other. If the echoes are not the same, the difference is a discrete indication of a flaw. The invention applies especially to the detection of flaws close to the front surface of the object where the front surface echo tends to obscure nearby flaws.

  • Patent number: 4168655
Abstract: A vapor engine including a cylinder in which a piston reciprocates and having an inlet valve in the cylinder head which is driven from its seat by the piston as it approaches the cylinder head. The time at which the valve is driven from its seat does not change relative to the top dead center position of the piston. The travel of the valve body is ballistic and the valve remains open for a time determined by a combination of the piston velocity at the initial contact, the distance the valve travels before hitting a stop from which it rebounds elastically toward its seat, the pressure drop across the valve and the mass of the valve. The exhaust valve of the engine may be either internal and actuated by mechanical forces or external, in which case it is actuated by pressure forces. In one embodiment of the invention the stop from which the valve rebounds may be adjustably positioned manually or automatically to control the period of time during which the intake valve is open.

  • Patent number: 4168667
Abstract: A load-restraining device is disclosed herein for use in lading-carrying vehicles, such as truck trailers. The device includes a curtain which is adjustably suspended from an overhead support that extends laterally across the top of the trailer and is mounted for longitudinal movement therein. The curtain includes laterally-extending pockets, each of which carries a load-restraining belt. Belt hooks on opposite ends of each belt cooperate with belt rails in the sidewalls of the trailer and a belt tensioner or buckle is provided at the center of each belt. The pockets on the curtain are positioned on the side of the curtain opposite the lading-engaging face, so as to maximize the strength of the curtain and are in a manner which inhibits removal of the belts and reduces pilferage.

  • Patent number: 4168668
Abstract: A tiedown winch for securing a load such as an automobile to a transporting vehicle such as a railroad car includes a housing slidable in a channel track carried by the transporting vehicle. A chain for securing the load is wound on a drum journalled in top and bottom walls of the housing for rotation around a vertical axis. Both end walls of the housing are provided with openings so that the chain can extend from the housing in either direction, and the openings include contiguous segments in the bottom wall to decrease the height of the housing. The top wall or cover of the housing is hinged for access to the drum, and a single locking mechanism is provided for the cover and for securing the housing against sliding in the track. In an intermediate position, the locking mechanism permits the housing to slide freely while the cover is held closed.

  • Patent number: 4168670
Abstract: Sewage sludge is dewatered with the aid of lime and then incinerated using high sulfur fuel. During incineration the lime reacts with the sulfur in the fuel and with oxygen to form the solid CaSO.sub.4 for disposal and thus prevent formation of the pollutant, SO.sub.2 gas. High sulfur coal may be crushed and used as an additional filter aid or sludge conditioner and then serve as the auxiliary fuel during incineration.

Abstract: Tablets are coated by tumbling a batch of tablets in a rotating coating pan and subjecting the tablets while they are in the pan to a plurality of treatment steps. Each of these treatment steps consists of a plurality of treatment cycles each including a dosing period in which a measured quantity of tablet coating liquid is introduced into the pan, a drying period in which drying air is supplied to the interior of the pan and an intermediate mixing period during which the tablets tumble in contact with the already introduced coating liquid for a pre-set time and no drying air is supplied to the pan. The temperature of the batch of tablets being coating in the coating pan is sensed by a sensor. The temperature of the batch of tablets at the end of a pre-set time interval from the commencement of the drying period is stored in a memory device as a reference temperature.
