  • Patent number: 4188755
Abstract: An expandable abrading tool (20, 20a, 20b) disclosed includes a rotatable arbor (22) and an abrasive insert (24, 24a, 24b) having stacked washers (26) which receive the arbor and are mounted thereon in a clamped relationship. Each washer has a round outer edge including an abrasive (32) secured thereto for performing a cutting operation upon tool rotation. The washers each have a frustoconical shape that points toward one axial end of the insert. A threaded clamp (38, 40, 42, 44) which provides a means for clamping the ends (34, 36) of the insert is adjustable to increase the clamping force in order to flatten the washers and thereby control the washer diameters. The insert can thus be initially sized for use and can be adjusted to compensate for wear of the abrasive.

  • Patent number: 4188772
Abstract: The present invention relates to a hydraulic speed control system for controlling the peripheral speed of a pick-up reel rotatively mounted about the front of a peanut combine. During the harvesting operation, the hydraulic speed control system is adapted to drive the pick-up reel at a generally constant speed as long as the ground speed of the peanut combine is equal to or less than a selected speed. The hydraulic control system is responsive to the ground speed of the peanut combine such that once the ground speed exceeds said selected speed, the hydraulic control system then drives the pick-up reel in proportion to ground speed such that the peripheral speed of the reel is generally equal the harvester ground speed in order that the relative velocity between the entering crop material being delivered to the combine by the reel and the combine itself is generally zero.

Abstract: In a process for condensing the vapor of a volatile liquid, such as vinyl chloride monomer, a gaseous mixture comprising the vapor of the volatile liquid and a non-flammable gas, such as nitrogen, is heat exchanged with a liquid refrigerant or vapor evolved therefrom, or both, the heat exchange being performed such that condensate of the vapor of the volatile liquid is produced at a directly or indirectly controlled temperature which is between the boiling point of the volatile liquid at atmospheric pressure and the boiling point of the refrigerant at atmospheric pressure and which is also between the boiling and freezing points of the volatile liquid at the prevailing pressure at which the condensate is formed, the non-flammable gas remaining uncondensed; the condensate is collected; the uncondensed gas is warmed to a temperature, and then vented to the atmosphere.

  • Patent number: 4188794
Abstract: A food storage compartment of a freezer accumulates frost. At selected times, a heat source of large thermal capacity transforms a retained body of water or ice to steam. The steam condenses upon and melts the frost. A portion of the melt is retained to provide a source of steam in a subsequent defrosting period. The heat source operates at a temperature substantially above the boiling temperature of water and is permanently attached to a concavity or other reservoir which retains the water substance. In a preferred embodiment, the freezer is part of a system of domestic appliances using a liquid phase thermal exchange fluid to transfer heat between a plurality of appliances and thermal reservoirs maintained at hot and cold temperatures. The retained water substance is ice in a concavity at the bottom of the freezer. During a defrosting period, valves are positioned to allow flow of hot thermal exchange fluid as a heat source adjacent to the concavity.

Abstract: Improved hydrogen-hydride absorption systems for improving the energy utilization in refrigeration and heat pump cycles comprise reactor systems for chemically forming three or more hydride components, means for supplying heat to and removing heat from the hydride in the respective systems, and means for conveying hydrogen between the several reactor systems.A method for deriving improved heat pump effects from a narrowly temperature differential thermal source and sink by means of three or more hydride components is achieved by successive pressure staging between a series of hydride components over the narrow temperature range of the thermal source.A method for deriving improved energy utilization of a high temperature thermal source for refrigeration by means of three or more hydride components is effected by cascading pressure differences between hydride components.

  • Patent number: 4188798
Abstract: A two-part ear ornament clip of known type, whose pivotally connected front and back parts are so dimensioned and connected to one another that, in the open condition of the clip, the front part is supported by the back part in a manner which greatly facilitates the handling and application of said clip by the wearer to her ear lobe. Moreover, said front and back parts are such that, when said parts are in their lobe-gripping positions relative to one another, the portion of the front part to which the ornament would be secured is directly opposite the portion of the back part which is in contact with the inside face of the ear lobe.

  • Patent number: 4188799
Abstract: A clip for an earring or the like comprising separate jaw members pivotally attached for movement towards and away from each other. A first jaw member includes an ornamental portion and is provided with contact means adapted to contact outer portions of the wearer's earlobe. A second jaw is provided with a generally C-shaped loop having base, root and terminal segments. A pair of spaced smooth bore openings are respectively provided through the root and terminal segments for receipt of a screw provided at one end thereof with contact means adapted to cooperate with the contact means of the first jaw member and for engaging the opposite side of the earlobe, and at the other end, with means for manually rotating said screw for movement relative to the first jaw. The terminal segment of the loop is angularly disposed with regard to the screw so that as the screw passes through the opening therein, the front top edge and the bottom rear edges of said opening make threaded engagement with the screw.

Abstract: A drive shaft of a fan coupling assembly includes a shaft member fixedly connected with a fan drive rotor, and a flange member fixedly connected with a fan pulley. The two members are separately formed into their predetermined configurations. The shaft member has a securing portion and a flange coaxially formed at one end thereof, while the flange member has a central bore including a plurality of radially outwardly recessed portions. After the flange member is fitted on the shaft member through the central bore thereof, the two members are fixedly secured to each other by a securing member, whereby an integral flanged shaft may be obtained.

  • Patent number: 4188801
Abstract: A universal joint for power drive tools and the like. The universal assembly includes a means for connection to a tool and a means for engaging the nut or a head of a fastening member, such as a bolt. Articulation of the universal is accomplished by means of a quadrified ball in a square socket. The head of the ball retains its spherical form, and the base of the socket is spherical in shape to accommodate the ball head. The four sides of the quadrified ball do not intersect thereby retaining the spherical configuration of the ball at the corners. A unique ball spring preloads the socket. The resulting combination is ideally suited for power drive tools wherein the forces generated are high, and the rotation is rapid.
