  • Patent number: 4216836
Abstract: A process and system is provided permitting the recovery of solid particulate material, particularly solid copolymer beads, from a drilling fluid which also contains drilled solids of the same and larger size as the particulate material. The drilling fluid returns are passed to a separator, such as a shale shaker, which screens from the fluid a major proportion of the drilled solids along with the particulate material. The latter fraction is then passed into a vessel containing a weighted liquid having a specific gravity less than that of the drilled solids but greater than that of the particulate material. In such vessel, the particulate material is allowed to rise to the surface of the liquid while the drilled solids settle therein. The particulate material can then be skimmed from the upper portion of the vessel and returned to the well for recirculation therein.

  • Patent number: 4216837
Abstract: Weighing apparatus and method. A plurality of weigh members are moveable in sequence in a continuous path. Each weigh member receives an item to be weighed and includes a member which is moveable in response to the weight of the carried item. Preferably, the moveable member is elastically deformable. When an item to be weighed is deposited on a weigh member, the moveable member moves in response to the weight and then "springs" back and so on in an oscillating fashion. The weigh members, each carrying an item to be weighed, are rapidly moved in sequence along the continuous path to a weighing location and the time, while short, is sufficient to permit oscillating movement of the moveable member to substantially cease by the time that the weigh member arrives at the weighing location.

  • Patent number: 4216838
Abstract: Apparatus for compacting or consolidating a strip of road surfacing material essentially comprises a self-propelled compacting machine and a guide vehicle. The guide vehicle has a steerable wheel and a set of drive wheels. The compacting machine is guided for orbital movement around the guide vehicle at a preset turning radius. The guide vehicle may be self-propelled in which case it carries its own motor for driving its driving shaft. Preferably the guide vehicle is driven for progressive displacement along the strip of surfacing material in response to the turning of a coupling bar, connecting the compacting machine with the guide vehicle about its end for determining the turning radius of the former. The coupling bar in turn rotatably drives the driving shaft of the guide vehicle which in turn drives the drive wheels of the guide vehicle through a power transmission.

  • Patent number: 4216841
Abstract: A steering power control device for a power steering system which device is provided with a sensing means which detects the weight of a load carried on a vehicle and a flow control valve which regulates the flow rate of a hydraulic fluid that is supplied to the power steering in response to the detected load, thereby reducing the necessary force to operate the steering wheel when the vehicle load is large. Further, the flow control valve can be regulated also by the output of a vehicle speed sensing means. With the controlling factors of both the vehicle load and the vehicle speed, the operation of the steering wheel is made light when the vehicle speed is low and the vehicle load is large, while the operation of the steering wheel meets with a proper resistance when the vehicle is high and the vehicle load is small, thereby stabilizing the operation of the steering wheel and giving an ideal feeling to a driver in the operation of the steering wheel.

The cover, in turn, has integrally formed hinge blocks with slots for receiving the hinge tabs. The arrangement is such that in open position, the top of the cover is coplanar with the bottom of the base container so that both cover and container can engage a flat surface and function as serving trays for contents in the box. In a second position, wherein the box is closed, the cover is simply swung by flexing of the hinge tabs over the top of the container to close the upper opening. The container and cover openings include cooperating lip and step structures providing an hermetic seal and also frictionally holding the cover in place on the container.

  • Patent number: 4216868
Abstract: A crane operating aid comprises a load moment computer and a number of sensors which monitor crane parameters, such as boom length, boom angle, slewing angle, and boom reaction forces. The computer then calculates the percentage of load capacity as a function of the crane manufacturer's published load rating tables. Absolute encoding digital optical sensors are employed to monitor linear or angular displacement between portions of the crane which are operatively moveable with respect to one another. The digital output signals from the various sensors are then fed to the computer for use in its calculations. Each sensor comprises a detector made up of a light emitting element which is spaced from a light receiving element and an encoder disc which is mounted for displacement with respect to the detector and operates to present a series of tracks intermediate the light emitting portion and light receiving portion of the detector. Each track comprises a series of alternatingly opaque and transparent portions.
