  • Patent number: 4218815
Abstract: A transfer machine of the type in which workpieces are successively transferred through a series of work stations on either side of the line of movement of the workpieces with work heads located at each station to perform various operations on the workpieces. The disclosed transfer machine consists of one or more transfer machine module units, each module including a prismatic base having upwardly directed sides upon which are mounted a series of oppositely directed heads and the workpiece transfer system mounted to the base and extending between the work heads to convey the workpieces up and down the base sides. The resulting vertical spacing of the work heads from one another enables closer spacing of the work heads by enabling access to the tooling through the space through which the workpieces are transferred, while reducing the floor space required for the machine. Also, chips formed during machining operations fall away so as not to accumulate at the machining station.

  • Patent number: 4218818
Abstract: A method and apparatus are provided by which the windings of an armature are cut near their opposite ends and then the windings or coil segments are preferably simultaneously forced from all the armature slots. An apparatus is described for carrying out the process in which after the coils have been cut circumferentially at their opposite ends, the armature and an annular array of stripping blades are brought into engagement so that the blades enter the slots of the armature and force the armature coil segments out of the armature slots. In the preferred embodiment the number of stripping blades coincides with the number of armature slots so that a stripper blade enters each slot and forces the coil segments out of all of the armature slots simultaneously.

  • Patent number: 4218824
Abstract: A gauge for testing guards on machines against safety standards setting minimum clearances to moving parts as a relation of the openings in the guard. The gauge is in the form of a shaft having sized ends on either end thereof related to designated gauge opening sizes. Stop collars are positioned on the shaft at fixed lengths from the respective ends such that if the end passes through the opening the stop collar must contact the guard prior to the end touching any moving part within the guard in order for the guard to be in compliance. Additionally, the stop collars are sized to allow testing of additional openings to determine the size thereof. Thus, both the sized ends and the stop collars can be used to chuck opening sizes.

  • Patent number: 4218825
Abstract: A cylindrical blank is mounted on the turn table of a vertical lathe with the axis of the former as close as possible to the axis of the latter. The angle between a reference point on the periphery of the blank and a measuring point circumferentially displaced from the reference point and the deviation of the periphery at the measuring point from a circle about the axis of the turn table are measured. Then an axis at which the dispersion of the deviation at the measuring point is a minimum is calculated by using the measured angles and the deviations to determine the distance between the axis of the blank and the axis of the turn table, and press members mounted on the turn table are actuated to move the blank by the distance thus determined to coincide the axis of the blank with the axis of the turn table.

  • Patent number: 4218834
Abstract: For scoring of simulated firing of a weapon, having flatwise-angularly sweeping beams of radiation, emitted at the weapon location during a period beginning at or about the instant of simulated firing are used for measuring the position of a target retroreflector in range and in functions of azimuth and elevation. During the same period a calculation is made of the instantaneous positions in range, and in functions of azimuth and elevation, of an imaginary projectile fired from the weapon at the firing instant under conditions then existing, and the relationship is ascertained between the imaginary projectile and each beam in its angular position at interception by the retroreflector. At a scoring instant, when weapon-to-reflector distance equals weapon-to-projectile distance, or when the projectile is at a predetermined elevation relative to the reflector, scoring is based on the relationship of projectile to angular beam position at that instant.

  • Patent number: 4218845
Abstract: A bird-calling device which is adapted to be securely held in the mouth of a person for use in imitating sounds made by birds--especially wild turkeys. A rigid base is adapted to fit within the roof of a person's mouth, somewhat in the manner of a partial denture plate. The rigid base is uniquely fitted to each person, and it has protruding wires which are located and sized so as to anchor the base to one or more teeth. A U-shaped recess in the rigid base is sized to tightly hold a removable diaphragm assembly. The diaphragm in the assembly is positioned so that it is exposed to selective contact by the user's tongue, preferably in a region well back of the tip of the tongue. When the user expells air past the diaphragm, an imitation bird sound may be produced; and the sound may be varied by changing the position of the user's tongue with respect to the diaphragm.

Abstract: A toy vehicle is provided for use in a toy vehicle game including an endless track defining at least two parallely extending vehicle lanes in which two or more toy vehicles are operated. The toy vehicles each include a reversible electric rotary drive motor and a transmission operatively engaged between the motor and the drive wheels for driving the vehicles in a forward direction regardless of the direction of rotation of the drive motor. The drive transmission has an idler drive member mounted on a rotatable frame in driving engagement with the output of the motor and is moved into driving engagement with one or the other of the drive wheels depending upon the direction of rotation of the drive motor.

  • Patent number: 4218849
Abstract: One or more elongated members, such as bars or tubes of an elastic material are sonically vibrated, by means of a mechanical oscillator coupled thereto, at a frequency such as to set up resonant elastic standing wave vibration in the elastic resonators. A conduit or chamber is provided in which material to be treated or parts to be polished along with an appropriate fluid treatment material are placed, the parts and material either being flowed through the conduit or retained therein for a predetermined treatment time. Sonic energy is coupled from the resonator member or members to the treatment conduit at selected positions along the standing waves generated in the resonators, this coupling being made adjacent the node and anti-node of such vibration in one embodiment; at two anti-nodes in a second embodiment, and a single anti-node in a third embodiment, to obtain various types of vibratory motion in the treatment conduit or chamber for various effects on the parts or other material being treated.

  • Patent number: 4218854
Abstract: Apparatus for transporting, agitating, rotating and treating discrete objects, such as metallic parts, has an endless band which is trained over two sets of rollers and forms a trough between the two sets of rollers. The band is driven by at least one set of the rollers and is tensioned at a level below the trough. The objects are admitted into one end of the trough and move up and down in response to movement of the band as well as in a direction toward the other end of the trough, either because the trough slopes downwardly toward the other end or under the action of a helix in the trough. The helix can form part of the band, or it can constitute a discrete part which is rotated in the trough. One or more impellers and/or nozzles are provided above the trough to spray solid or liquid treating agents onto the objects.

  • Patent number: 4218855
Abstract: A particulate spray nozzle is disclosed having an internal mixing chamber with a liquid spray orifice on one side and a liquid and particulate discharge bore opening the opposite side to ambience. A liquid supply passage upstream of the orifice contains a disc-like diffuser with the plane of the disc parallel to and aligned with the longitudinal axis of the orifice. The diffuser is spaced axially from the orifice and the orifice is spaced axially from the discharge bore for causing a high pressure liquid to be discharged from the orifice in the form of a narrow gradually diverging spray which picks up particulate material in the mixing chamber and propels it out of the discharge bore by uniformly engaging only the outer most portion of the discharge bore. The apparatus can function as an abrasive blasting assembly or a chemical foaming gun. A method of discharging particulate materials, which may be either solid or liquid, is also disclosed.
