  • Patent number: 4238933
Abstract: An air conditioning system which reduces energy consumption by disposing of the waste heat to a low temperature heat sink, at the same time recovering useful energy. An auxiliary liquid cooled condenser is connected in parallel with the air condenser of a conventional vapor compression air conditioning system through a valve located between the compressor of the existing system and the condensers. When the valve is actuated the refrigerant of the air conditioning system is routed from the air condenser and instead flows through the liquid cooled condenser assembly in heat exchange relationship with a body of fluid which is at a lower temperature than the ambient air, such as water from a swimming pool or from a municipal water supply. The valve also serves to exhaust refrigerant from the unused condenser. Maximum energy conservation is achieved by use of the total heat content of the refrigerant rather than only the high-temperature heat as in those prior art systems designed as a principal heat source.

  • Patent number: 4238960
Abstract: An accelerometer mechanically attached to a machine senses the machine rotor's unbalance and outputs an electrical signal which is indicative of the magnitude and position of the rotor unbalance. A tachometer generator's rotor is mechanically coupled to the machine rotor and outputs an electrical signal delineating the speed and rotational position (with respect to time) of the rotor. By physically indexing one of the tachometer generator rotor poles (north or south) to an index/mark on the engine rotor, the position of the mark at any instant in time is determined. The physical location of the unbalance is obtained by determining the phase relationship of the unbalance signal to that of the tachometer generator signal. This is accomplished by obtaining simultaneous "snapshots" of the two signals employing multiplexing techniques to alternately sample each signal. The signal is then recorded and later reduced by ground equipment.

  • Patent number: 4238962
Abstract: A real time scanned transducer ultrasonic imaging system is disclosed having an improved mechanical scanning system for reciprocating its transducer. The transducer is immersed in a fluid containing chamber. The drive system includes monitoring equipment which produces signals indicating transducer position. Imaging electronics processes (1) electrical signals produced by the transducer in response to ultrasonic echoes, and (2) the transducer position signals from the monitor. Display apparatus produces substantially real time ultrasonically derived images. The drive system includes a transducer carriage which reciprocates on guide rod structure. A drive arm is coupled to the carriage by a compliant coupling element. A drive shaft attached to the drive arm extends through a wall of the chamber, such that the drive shaft oscillates the drive arm.

  • Patent number: 4238965
Abstract: The disclosed transmitter operates in a two wire process control system to modify a loop current through the two wires that are representative of pressure drop through an orifice into a second loop current through the two wires that are representative of flow rate through the orifice. To accomplish this, the transmitter generates a first voltage that is representative of the first loop current. Then, it generates a second voltage proportional to the square root of the first voltage, and generates a third voltage proportional to the difference between the first and second voltages. The transmitter then sinks an additional current in the two wires proportional to the third voltage. The sum of the first loop current and the additional current equals the second loop current.

  • Patent number: 4238970
Abstract: The present invention relates to a bevolute gearing system which transmits torque between non-intersecting shafts at right angles to each other. The bevolute gear system includes a pinion gear which is flat and in one plane. The pinion gear is designed to include teeth which are shaped in the form of an involute spiral. The bevolute gear system includes a second gear which is also designed to include teeth which are shaped in the form of an involute spiral. The second gear is mounted on a non-intersecting axis at a right angle to the axis of the pinion gear. The bevolute gearing system of the present invention reduces the thrust loads to negligible values for the bearings of both the pinion gear and the second gear. In addition, higher mechanical efficiencies, wider tolerances on alignment of the gears, interchangeability between the gear and the pinions to produce different ratios and a substantially eliminated gear noise are a few of the many advantages disclosed in the present invention.
