  • Patent number: 4281685
Abstract: An electromagnetic locking type actuator is constituted by a control member reciprocatable in a fluid passage to control the fluid pressure in the passage, an electromagnetic device for applying a first magnetomotive force to the control member, and a magnetic device for always applying a second magnetomotive force to the control member. In the actuator, when an electric current in one direction is applied to the electromagnetic device the first and second magnetomotive forces are added to move the control member in an attracting direction so that the control member is attracted and held at its movement terminating position by the magnetic device even after the first magnetomotive force no longer acts at that position. When an electric current in a direction opposite to the one direction is applied to the electromagnetic device the first and second magnetomotive forces cancel each other thereby maintaining said control member in a magnetically released state.

  • Patent number: 4281715
Abstract: A bypass valve for use with an oil well testing string is disclosed which includes a spring loaded check valve which is normally in the closed position. If pressure in the interior of the test string is higher than the pressure in the well annulus, the check valve means opens until the interior pressure is equalized with the well annulus pressure. When the interior string pressure is reduced to that pressure present in the well annulus, the check valve means returns to the closed condition. The check valve means contains frangible shear means which shear when the well annulus pressure exceeds the interior string pressure by a predetermined amount. The check valve means then moves to the locked closed condition. The bypass valve disclosed is intended for use in a testing string for an oil well, and is to be placed in the testing string below a normally closed tester valve and above a seal assembly for insertion into sealing engagement with a preset production type packer.

  • Patent number: 4281717
Abstract: A system for sensing and acting to suppress flame conditions as well as an explosion associated with a flame front in an enclosure which is susceptible to fire and explosion condition, such as trash shredders, grain elevators, and enclosed areas where oxygen and combustible material may be present in the necessary proportions to feed a fire of such rapid propagation as to result in explosive proportions resulting in damage to the structure forming the enclosure. The system comprises means distributed about the enclosing structure to sense a flame as well as a sudden rise in pressure and set off a fire and explosion suppressing system which operates to flood the enclosed area with an agent capable of quenching the flame causing the pressure rise, and programmable monitoring control circuits for operating the system and all of its components during the time when a pressure rise signals the development of an explosion, and following the suppression of an explosion.
