  • Patent number: 4284000
Abstract: An apparatus for tightly compacting material within a wheeled, open top container including a frame composed of a stationary base and a overhead section disposed above the container and coupled to the frame base section by a plurality of telescoping columns which permit the overhead section to raise and lower relative to the container. A plurality of nominally relaxed tension lines extend downwardly from the frame overhead section to interconnect with the upper rim portion of the container. The apparatus also includes a pressing head suspended below the frame overhead section by a pair of spaced apart hydraulic cylinders which are retractable to lift the pressing head to an elevation above the container or extendible to force the pressing head downwardly into the container. As the pressing head pushes against the material within the container, a reaction force is generated which initially causes the frame overhead section to lift upwardly until the tension lines are drawn taut.

  • Patent number: 4284001
Abstract: A wire matrix printer has a plurality of heads, each consisting of nine wires arranged in a slanting format. The printer can be controlled to print Oriental type characters such as Japanese by loading a wire image map of the characters into a memory. The loading technique loads the memory in a slanted fashion corresponding to the slant of the print heads and reads from the memory in a bit column manner to correspond to the position of the various wires of the multihead print block. The loading and unloading of the wire image memory is controlled by a pair of microprocessors operating respectively on different halves of the memory, such that at any given time, half of the memory is being loaded while the other half is being read from. Thereafter, the memory is switched so that the loaded half is read and the previously read half is cleared and loaded with a new line of information.

  • Patent number: 4284002
Abstract: In a character-selecting mechanism for a printer, an electromagnet which controls the engagement and disengagement of a pawl with a ratchet and, thereby, the actual printing step, is supplemented with a permanent magnet having spaced-apart poles. A core arm lies within a core passage in the electromagnet and protrudes into the magnetic field produced by the permanent magnet. Activation of the electromagnet by a current pulse magnetizes the core arm to a polarity such that it is repelled by a pole next to which the core arm is disposed in a first position so that the core arm moves toward the other pole to take up a second position. During the transit from first to second position the core arm which is connected through a core member to a pawl brings the pawl into engagement with the ratchet.

Abstract: Projectile with at least one expellable subprojectile. The projectile is provided with a nose element, which is arranged, in a predetermined position in the trajectory of the projectile, to be discarded, thereby causing a decelerating force on the projectile. The fore subprojectile is provided with a deceleration-sensing device, which is capable of initiating the expelling of the subprojectile as a consequence of sensing said deceleration force. The subprojectiles in behind are arranged to be expelled either as a consequence of sensing deceleration forces occurring on expelling of the subprojectile immediately in front of it, or alternatively to be expelled in a conventional way with a delay relative to one another achieved through pyrotechnic delay.

Abstract: A segmented sabot utilizes a double ramp configuration and a centrally poioned obturating band in alignment with the center of gravity of an in-bore projectile to improve the uniformity of the shear traction forces at the interface between the sabot segments and a subcaliber projectile, to reduce propellant gas blow-by and to enhance projectile in-bore and trajectory stability. The increased uniformity of shear traction forces between sabot and projectile interfaces and propellant gas self-sealing design permits a reduction in sabot weight of sufficient magnitude to increase the velocity of the projectile at the muzzle exit.

  • Patent number: 4284010
Abstract: A conveyance system having an overhead guide rail above a surface and one or more vehicles which are guided by the rail and partially supported on the surface by a wheel structure. Preferably, the guide rail includes the stator of a linear induction motor which cooperates with a rotor element in a propulsion member for the vehicle. A handpole on the vehicle connects the propulsion member to a passenger-carrying platform on the wheel structure. The handpole is sufficiently vertical to be readily grasped by a passenger for support while riding and assistance in getting on and off the vehicle, and yet the pole is sufficiently inclined to partially support the vehicle and permit its movement in response to the propulsion member. The preferred system uses simple, lightweight vehicles which can be readily installed over a pre-existing surface such as a sidewalk or corridor and are arranged to move continuously therealong at a slow passenger-transfer speed and a faster speed between transfer points.

Abstract: A restraint assembly for the door-actuating means of a railroad hopper car. The door-actuating means is shifted by the piston of a fluid cylinder between door-closing and door-opening positions. The restraint mechanism comprises a first bracket mounted on the center sill and rotatively supporting a shaft on which a lever is mounted. The free end of the lever is pivotally joined to a first end of a spring assembly. The second end of the spring assembly is pivotally mounted to a second bracket affixed to the center sill. One end of the shaft has a notch formed therein. The door-actuating means has a laterally extending lug. When the door-actuating means is in its retracted door-closing position the restraint assembly will be in an over center restraining condition. Abutment of the door-actuating means lug against the shaft notch will prevent longitudinal shifting of the door-actuating means due to inertia.
