  • Patent number: 4302958
Abstract: The invention relates to methods and apparatus for making rings from tube stock (10) by a part-off rolling tool (12,15) which is advanced radially into the tube stock to form successive rings, e.g. annular blanks for subsequent roll forming into bearing rings. The tube stock is indexed forward after separation of each ring. Errors in the length of tube stock indexed forward each time are contained by forming a locating groove (47) on the tube stock by means of a groove-rolling tool (40) set at an appropriate axial distance from the part-off rolling tool (12) and moved radially with it. In the next cycle the groove (47) automatically centers the part-off tool as the latter begins its advance into the tube stock, so as to give the correct axial length of the finished ring. The part-off tool is stopped before fully penetrating the tube wall, which is then machined. Final separation takes place during this machining or in a subsequent finishing pass by the part-off tool.

  • Patent number: 4302969
Abstract: For an infestation of scab to develop through its initial stages requires the presence of prolonged periods of leaf surface wetness to enable the spores to germinate. Apparatus is provided which monitors the ambient temperature and humidity to detect the occurrence of periods of leaf wetness sufficient to permit the initial development of an infestation. When the occurrence of such a period of wetness is detected, the apparatus changes its operating state to indicate the progress of the infestation through its secondary stages, this progress being dependent on the ambient temperature but not the wetness of the leaves. The apparatus follows the progress of the infestation by means of a monitoring device which generates a pulsed signal whose frequency is dependent on the ambient temperature and humidity, the pulses of this signal being then counted in counter means and selectively displayed on a display.

Abstract: A valve timing device for an internal combustion engine includes a hub with an internal helical groove which engages a tracking post extending from a cylindrical surface of a crankshaft. A locking cap is placed at the outer end of the crankshaft spaced apart from the hub with a compression spring wrapped about the crankshaft between the hub and the locking cap. A sprocket is keyed onto the hub and trained about a chain which is drivingly trained about a conventional camshaft. As the crankshaft speed is increased, inertial loads of the camshaft causes the sprocket and hub to rotate relative to the crankshaft which axially moves the hub a predetermined amount along the crankshaft to compress the spring until the resilient forces of the spring counterbalances the inertia forces of the camshaft. As the hub is angularly positioned, the camshaft becomes angularly retarded relative to the crankshaft such that the valve operation is delayed with respect to the piston operation as the engine speed increases.

  • Patent number: 4302991
Abstract: Apparatus is provided for plunging a fastener through a soft material preparatory to insertion of the fastener in a hard backing. The apparatus may be embodied as an attachment for a conventional fastener feed apparatus or as an improved form of feed apparatus itself. The improvement includes two telescoping members biased to a normal fully extended position. The members are engageable end-to-end with conventional telescoping elements of the feed apparatus and are axially movable with them. The force biasing the members apart is set so as to be substantially less than the force biasing the conventional elements to a fully extended position so that the fastener will be plunged through the soft material first upon application of a force, and then subsequently inserted into the backing upon application of additional force. Apparatus is provided for limiting the collapsed length of the members so as to control the depth of the plunge.

  • Patent number: 4302996
Abstract: A method and apparatus for detecting the length of wire blanks in a wire cutting machine is disclosed, the machine including feed apparatus for feeding wire stock into the cutting machine, stop apparatus for engaging one end of the wire stock at a predetermined length in the cutting machine, and cutting apparatus for cutting wire blanks from the wire stock. When the leading end of the wire stock engages the stop apparatus with a predetermined pressure, the blank is at a proper length to be cut. The pressure causes the stop apparatus to expand radially. Strain gauges mounted about the stop apparatus detect the expansion by generating an electrical signal when connected in a bridge circuit. The strain gauges detect an over feed situation when the stop apparatus expands beyond a predetermined point. Similarly, an under feed situation is detected when little or no expansion of the stop apparatus is sensed.

  • Patent number: 4302997
Abstract: A guarded tomato slicer has a sharp rack of blades mounted substantially diagonally across a table with a loading area disposed between a retracted pusher and the sharp edges of the blades. A swinging vertical gate is mounted in front of the loading area on a vertical pivot adjacent the rack of blades. The gate is resiliently poised in front of the loading area. The gate and pusher are short enough to clear each other when a tomato is pushed into the loading area against and through the swinging gate, which covers the sharp edges of the rack of blades to guard them. The swinging gate has an apertured roof to shield the top of the loading area. As deflectable outer segment of the roof has a projection which provides an outward limit of travel for the swinging gate and is deflectable to permit removal of the swinging gate. The pusher is mounted on a pair of horizontal slide rods connected to the top of the rack having lower extensions which extend downwardly together to provide a support foot.

  • Patent number: 4302999
Abstract: An electronic musical instrument includes twelve multiplexed wave data generators each of which corresponds to one of twelve musical notes in an octave and produces a multiplexed wave data signal which has a basic pulse frequency decisive of a note and has data indicating states of octavely related plural waves for the same note in a time-division-multiplexed manner. A note selection circuit selects a multiplexed wave data signal for the note designated by the depressed key. The selected wave data signal is converted by a shift register to parallel wave data signals, which are latched by a latch circuit. Selection of the octave is made by the latching time of the latch circuit determining the positions of the bits in the shift register to be latched. Rewriting of latched data in the latch circuit is effected each time the value of the data signal having the highest frequency among the wave data signals varies.
