  • Patent number: 4327509
Abstract: A conventional back hoe type earth moving machine is equipped with an earth fracturing ripper tooth mechanism attached to the back hoe boom and dipper so that it can not only be manipulated into working position as required but also stored out of the way, when the back hoe bucket is operated for conventional digging. Two hydraulic cylinders or rams are attached to the center pivot pin of the back hoe boom and dipper, for extending, retracting and manipulating the ripper tooth. Support for the rams is provided by a combination of the back hoe boom, the dipper and the bucket which are extended to form an "A" frame. The distal end of the "A" frame is supported by resting the back hoe bucket on the ground. The back hoe boom, dipper and bucket "A" frame, supported at each end, will resist, at the "A" frame apex, the reactive force required to move the ripper tooth into and upwardly through the material to be fractured.

  • Patent number: 4327521
Abstract: A system for growing and harvesting perennial, hedge-type, harvestable plants is provided which permits greater utilization of sunlight for photosynthesis, more efficient use of the land, and control of evapotranspiration through wind control. The plants are in rows, running in a substantially east-west direction, and are cut and harvested so that their "sun" surface(s) is not horizontal, but, rather, faces the direction of the sun's rays during the peak growing time of the day throughout the prime growing season of the year. The surface is generally cut to expose a maximum growing surface of the plant to sunlight and in this sense is analogous to solar collectors in solar home or hot water heating systems. The rows of plants are so spaced relative to adjacent rows to permit sunlight to fall on most of the planar surface of the hedge, but such that one row will not cast a dense shadow on a portion of another row.

  • Patent number: 4327534
Abstract: A method and apparatus for permanently extending the height of an upright pole set in the ground uses pole reinforcers which are driven in the ground alongside and complemental to the pole. Extensible power devices mounted on ground-engaging supports use gripping heads mounted adjacent the upper end of the device, in such manner that actuation of the devices holds the heads in biting engagement with the pole. As the devices are extended, the heads pull the pole from the ground and through the predetermined channel formed by the pole reinforcers. Once the pole is extended to the desired elevation, the pole reinforcers are permanently secured to the pole to provide stability at the new height. The present invention is useful in moving the pole through extended displacements in a single stroke of the hydraulic cylinders of the devices, obviating the necessity for successive attachment and detachment of the apparatus during raising of the pole.

Abstract: A dual fuel injector for a gas turbine engine having means for water injection to reduce NOx emissions, comprises an outer annular gas fuel duct with a venturi section with air purge holes to prevent liquid fuel entering the gas duct, an inner annular liquid fuel duct having inlets for water and liquid fuel and through which compressor air flows, the inner annular duct terminating in a nozzle, and a central flow passage through which compressor air also flows, terminating in a main diffuser having an inner secondary diffuser. The surfaces of both diffusers are arranged so that their surfaces are washed by the compressor air to reduce or prevent the acretion of carbon to the injector, the diffusers in effect forming a hollow pintle.

  • Patent number: 4327548
Abstract: A ducted fan propulsion plant has a reversible-pitch fan driven by a core gas turbine engine and housed in a duct which terminates at its downstream end in an outlet nozzle defined between two semi-cylindrical shells. The shells are mounted for movement hydraulically both axially and angularly to define an increased effective nozzle area for take-off. Upon further rearward axial displacement the shells adopt a reverse-thrust position to define air inlets to the fan when the fan blade pitch is reversed.

  • Patent number: 4327549
Abstract: An improvement is disclosed in a hydraulic system (10) having a variable displacement pump (12) and being capable of delivering pressurized fluid from the pump (12) to selectively engage at least three work circuits (18) with a first (20) of the circuits (18) being normally operable up to a first pressure and a second (22) of the circuits (18) being normally operable up to a second and lower pressure. The improvement comprises circuitry (80, 92, 94, 98, 108, 120, 122, 124, 126) for selectively operating a third (24) of the circuits (18) at one of the first or second pressures or at an upstaged pressure which exceeds the first pressure and circuitry (128) for reducing the displacement of the pump (12) in response to the third circuit (24) being operated at the upstaged pressure. Such upstaged pressure is available in a controlled manner for working against particularly heavy loads. Thus, a third and higher operating level is added to a system which already operates at at least two pressure levels.

  • Patent number: 4327551
Abstract: The temperature of the working gas in the heating chamber of each of a number of cylinders is continuously measured. An electronic selection circuit selects the lowest measured temperature as a control parameter by which the speed of a blower in the common air supply is controlled for providing an air flow proportional to blower speed. A pressure-detecting device measures the air flow through a pressure converter provides an electrical signal that normally controls the valves of the respective fuel supplies for the combustion chambers of the cylinders, but a monitoring device for each cylinder compares the measured working gas temperature with a pre-set maximum value so that when the maximum value is exceeded, the fuel supply valve is changed over to control by the output of the monitoring device, to reduce the fuel supply until the maximum temperature is no longer exceeded in that cylinder.

  • Patent number: 4327552
Abstract: A solar energy device comprising a body having a plurality of spaced focusing lenses to concentrate direct and reflected rays from the sun. A heat receiving member is inside of the body. One of the body and the member is expansible and contractible so that there is a relative movement between the surface of member and the focal points of the lenses, the member surface thereby being alternately in and out of coincidence with the lens focal points. The member is supported within the body and fed fluid to be heated. The heated fluid is then removed from the member. The heat receiving member or body that is expansible and contractible may be used as a prime mover.

  • Patent number: 4327553
Abstract: A gas powered motor has a reservoir for liquefied gas, a supply passage from the reservoir leading through one side of a heat exchanger to the motor and a container holding a buffer substance in heat conductive relationship with the reservoir. The buffer substance acts to supply heat to the liquefied gas while undergoing a chemical, physical crystallographic or other change of state to assist in maintaining the supply of gas to the motor from the reservoir. The motor exhaust leads to a vessel containing a condensing buffer substance which absorbs, persorbs or otherwise associates with the gas accompanied by a release of heat. The condensing buffer substance is in heat conductive relation with the other side of the heat exchanger in the gas supply to the motor to superheat the gas supplied.

  • Patent number: 4327555
Abstract: An absorption type air conditioning system in which a solar collector is used integrally to heat and strip refrigerant from the mixture of absorbent and refrigerant to eliminate a separated hot water or other heat transfer medium cycle as normally employed between the solar collector and the stripper generator. Also, the present invention includes an absorber which is integrally located within the confines of a deep water well used to extract heat from the entire system, together with a condenser coil or tube also located within the deep water well. The integral location of absorber and condenser within the confines of the heat sinking medium, such as a deep water well raises the overall cooling efficiency since a separated cooling cycle and heat exchanger are eliminated. The invention is particularly suited to brine type absorption systems, such as lithium bromide and water solutions where stripper generator action may take place at temperatures easily obtainable with the solar collector process included.

  • Patent number: 4327556
Abstract: A fail-safe electronically controlled defrost system is provided for use in a frost-free refrigerator suitable for home use. The defrost cycle, in the interests of power conservation, is made subject to plural input electronic control in a circuit in which the intrinsic reliability of the defrost system is specifically designed to revert to a non-power conservation mode in the event of failure of the electronics. Compressor time, door openings and user (vacation mode) settings are typical inputs for control of the period between defrosts.

  • Patent number: 4327557
Abstract: A refrigerator includes a compressor, an evaporator fan, a condensor fan and a defrost heater which are controlled by a defrost control system. The control senses the number and duration of freezer and fresh food compartment openings, the duration of the previous defrost operation, and the total accumulated compressor run time since the previous defrosting operation. A stored count is decremented by weighting functions which are adaptably varied in accordance with the number and duration of compartment door openings and the duration of the previous defrosting operation. When the stored count is decremented to zero, the defrosting operation may be initiated, unless inhibited. The defrosting operation is inhibited if the total accumulated compressor run time is less than a predetermined amount. The control is reset to a point just short of a defrosting operation if a power outage occurs.
