After the bed of hops has been partially dried and the hops of the bed have settled and become crusted, opposite ends of adjacent elongated members are upwardly displaced from opposite sides of the bed of hops in order that the elongated members may tear upwardly through the crusted bed of hops in the manner of an elongated flexible tear member.
