Patent number: RE31361Abstract: A power transmission adapted to be connected between a prime mover and a driven means which comprises a variable pulley drive comprising drive and driven pulleys connected by a belt, each having at least one flange axially movable with respect to the other. The pulleys continously rotate when the prime mover is operational. The output of the prime mover is directly connected to the pulley drive. The prime mover may be an automobile engine, the driven means may include the wheels of an automobile. A speed-responsive friction starting device with means to shift between neutral, forward and reverse is connected between the driven pulley and the driven means. Shifting of a dry, i.e, non-lubricated, belt on the pulleys when the speed ratio is changing is enhanced because of the continuous driving of the pulleys. Also, because the direction of the rotation of the pulleys is always the same, shifting between forward and reverse is enhanced, this being true for any type of belt.Type: GrantFiled: April 23, 1982Date of Patent: August 30, 1983Assignee: Borg-Warner CorporationInventor: Richard L. Patent number: 4400863Abstract: A rigid, molded fiberglass duct having an integral bendable elbow comprised of two sections of cured fiberglass securely bonded to a corrugated metal-foil sleeve. The method of manufacturing the rigid bendable duct is by sliding a corrugated metal-foil sleeve on to a mandrel and then wrapping the ends of the sleeve with uncured fiberglass. The area of the uncured fiberglass overlapping the corrugated, bendable sleeve is compacted by means of a collar which fits around the sleeve and the fiberglass and compresses the fiberglass into the corrugations of the sleeve. In order to enhance the bond, protusions may be provided in the overlapping area of the sleeve, such as by cutting the corrugated sleeve and bending it up to form tabs.Type: GrantFiled: November 2, 1981Date of Patent: August 30, 1983Assignee: C.A. Patent number: 4400864Abstract: A fluid filter (10) of the spin-on automotive type has a housing with a unitary closure member (18). The unitary, or one-piece, closure member (18) includes provision for mounting of the filter and for fluid flow therethrough. Two opposed annular flanges (78, 80) of the closure member receive between them the marginal edge (72) of the filter shell in a fluid-tight crimped engagement. This arrangement facilitates manufacture of the filter by providing support to the shell wall (68) during the crimping operation and also provides an exceptionally strong joint between the shell (12) and closure member (18). Another embodiment of the filter has a closure member (18) with a marginal edge (76) having a portion of reduced thickness which facilitates its crimped engagement with the filter shell (12). Methods of making such closure members attain a unitary closure member without welding operations.Type: GrantFiled: November 13, 1981Date of Patent: August 30, 1983Assignee: Fram CorporationInventors: Richard H. Patent number: 4400865Abstract: A self-aligned metal process is decribed which achieves self-aligned metal to silicon contacts and sub-micron contact-to-contact and metal-to-metal spacing. The insulation between the contacts and the metal is a pattern of dielectric material having a thickness dimension in the order of a micron or less. The metal and dielectric structure is substantially planar. The method for forming this structure involves providing a silicon body and then forming a first insulating layer on a major surface of the silicon body. A layer of polycrystalline silicon is formed thereover. Openings are made in the polycrystalline silicon layer by reactive ion etching which results in the structure having substantially horizontal surfaces and substantially vertical surfaces. A second insulating layer is then formed on both the substantially horizontal surfaces and substantially vertical surfaces.Type: GrantFiled: July 8, 1980Date of Patent: August 30, 1983Assignee: International Business Machines CorporationInventors: George R. Patent number: 4400866Abstract: A semiconductor structure and particularly a high-speed VLSI self-aligned Schottky Metal Semi-Conductor Field Effect Transistor having a relatively high operating frequency and low series resistance, predicated upon very controllable small structure geometries made by the growth of oxide bumper insulators on either side of the schottky barrier. The oxide bumpers width is relatively thicker than the depth of the initial silicon dioxide layer on the substrate surface thereby providing effective separation of the gate from the source and drain respectively. Accordingly, spatial separations between the self-aligned gate-and-drain and gate-and-source can be relatively very closely controlled by varying the doping level of an intermediate polysilicon layer thereby providing controllable differential polysilicon oxidation rates for the bumpers. Thus, the series resistance can be controlled to be relatively low thereby providing a VLSI SASMESFET device that can be operated at relatively high speeds.Type: GrantFiled: April 5, 1982Date of Patent: August 30, 1983Assignee: Xerox CorporationInventors: Keming W. Patent number: 4400867Abstract: A method for simultaneously patterning-over field oxide, gate oxide, and sidewall oxide--high conductivity metal-silicide electrode metallization for semiconductor integrated circuits involves (1) formation of an unpatterned polycrystalline silicon (polysilicon) layer everywhere on the exposed surface of all the oxides, (2) formation of a patterned photoresist layer on the polysilicon layer, (3) deposition of a layer of the metal-silicide over all exposed surfaces, (4) removal of the patterned photoresist layer to lift off metal-silicide, and (5) oxidation of only exposed portions of the polysilicon layer to form silicon dioxide. The polysilicon layer can be originally doped, so that the doped silicon dioxide can then be removed (without removing undoped silicon dioxide) by means of an etchant which attacks the dopant.Type: GrantFiled: April 26, 1982Date of Patent: August 30, 1983Assignee: Bell Telephone Laboratories, IncorporatedInventor: David B. Patent number: 4400868Abstract: Solar cells with different bandgaps are stacked to form a multijunction photovoltaic converter with a high conversion efficiency. By stacking the cells mechanically rather than by growing them all at one time, the most convenient combination of materials may be selected for the cells. The stacking is completed by means of a glass sealing layer with moats containing inter-cell contacts which are bonded to the cells.Type: GrantFiled: February 24, 1982Date of Patent: August 30, 1983Assignee: Varian Associates, Inc.Inventors: George A. Patent number: 4400869Abstract: The invention relates to a process for producing silicon diaphragm pressure transducers, and to pressure transducers so produced, which will operate in high temperature applications above 150.degree. C. by properly insulating the strain gauges from the diaphragm. This is achieved by utilizing two properly oriented silicon wafers which are joined together by a two-step diffusion technique, which includes the diffusion bonding of one boron doped wafer surface into the other wafer surface previously oxide coated, at greatly reduced pressures and temperatures than heretofore used. This simultaneous diffusion takes place because of prior contouring or the forming of relief channels into one of the bonded surfaces, and because only one joined surface is oxide coated, thus reducing process times substantially. That is, there is a continuous diffusion of boron into the boron oxide coated surface resulting in a boron rich layer of great uniformity.Type: GrantFiled: February 12, 1981Date of Patent: August 30, 1983Assignee: Becton Dickinson and CompanyInventors: L. Patent number: 4400870Abstract: A hermetic seal is formed without expensive precious metals by fusing two members of a semiconductor package together by scanning a laser beam along adjacent edges of the members. The compositions of the members which are fused together include ceramic, glass and metal. The method enables the formation of a hermetic seal at a relatively low temperature thereby greatly reducing the thermal stress on the semiconductor chip with resulting improvement in yields.Type: GrantFiled: October 6, 1980Date of Patent: August 30, 1983Assignee: Texas Instruments IncorporatedInventor: Safidul Islam
