  • Patent number: RE31592
Abstract: A method for operating a water-jet pump, in which the water needed for operation of the pump is recirculated in a cycle. The water is pressurized by means of compressed air at a substantially constant air pressure and the compressed air is used to drive out the water through the water-jet pump. Expanding the compressed air in a defined expansion space withdraws heat from the water by absorbing such heat in the air during and after its expansion. Apparatus for operating a water-jet pump includes a pair of ejecting receptacles and a first water valve for alternate connection of the ejecting receptacles to the pressure side of the water-jet pump. Second water valves return to the ejecting receptacles water which has been discharged from the water-jet pump.

  • Patent number: 4450592
Abstract: The socket body has an exterior surface which tapers in one direction while anchoring beads on the exterior surface taper in an opposite outward direction. The beads serve to anchor the body within a pelvis. In addition, cross ribs are formed on the anchoring beads with at least some of the ribs being elastic. Upon insertion of the socket, the ribs bend in a direction opposite to the direction of insertion. The two oppositely directed anchoring tapers of the socket body and the beads provide a firm fit of the socket body in a pelvis with a cement-free anchoring. Also, the bent ribs tend to resist withdrawal of the socket from the pelvis.

  • Patent number: 4450593
Abstract: The invention contemplates effectively integral lens-and-haptic structure and a technique of making the same, using composite laminated sheet material as the only ingredient of the ultimate product, which may be an intraocular implant or for extraocular (i.e., cornea-contact) application. The composite sheet material is of substantially the combined ultimate thickness of the lens and haptic, one of the laminations being of a material destined to be substantially only the lens component, and another of the laminations being of a material destined to be substantially only the haptic component. The lens-component lamination may be of optical-quality glass or of a transparent plastic which is inert to body fluids. Suitably coordinated masking and etching steps determine the contour of the ultimate central circular lens as well as the thickness and fenestration detail of the ultimate thin flexible haptic formations which are integral with and extend radially outward of the lens blank.

  • Patent number: 4450612
Abstract: A swaging apparatus for expanding a tube radially to form a joint, the apparatus including a mandrel for insertion in the tube. A working fluid is supplied through the mandrel to apply hydraulic pressure to the tube. The mandrel carries a pair of oppositely directed ramps, and a pair of seal combinations that are movable axially along the ramps. The seal combinations define the ends of an annular volume within which the pressurized fluid flows between the mandrel and the tube, each seal combination including a softer primary seal, which may be an O-ring, and a harder backup seal. Positioning sleeves that are axially slidable on the mandrel prevent angular movement of the backup seals relative to the longitudinal axis of the mandrel, thereby maintaining a uniform circumferential extrusion gap between the mandrel and the tube when pressure is applied.

  • Patent number: 4450629
Abstract: The present invention relates to a method, and means or device comprising an attachment, that is capable of quickly, efficiently, and accurately, horizontally aligning printing plates, especially offset printing plates on a rotary press such as an offset press, before the production run of the press. Set-up time is reduced to a minimum. The attachment may be removably affixed at a convenient location on the press in such a manner as to adjustably cooperate with the printing plate for horizontal alignment thereof, whereafter, the plate is locked in place, or hangs freely on the printing cylinder, and the printing job or run is started. Once the attachment or device guide is properly positioned, other or subsequent printing plates can be substituted for or changed with the first plate and quickly aligned, as the workload and variety of jobs for the day demands.

  • Patent number: 4450632
Abstract: A method of making an article of footwear includes attaching a connecting strip to the peripheral lower edge portion of a pre-formed upper so that the connecting strip surrounds the upper. The connecting strip has a profiled section providing a projecting extension, and a pre-formed ring-like welt member having an inner surface shaped for snapping engagement with the projecting extension of the connecting strip, is snapped into engagement with the connecting strip. A pre-formed sole and heel unit is then attached to the welt member by causing the upper peripheral surface of the sole and heel unit to adhere to the lower surface of the welt member. Alternatively, the pre-formed welt member may be omitted, and the pre-formed sole and heel unit snapped directly onto the connecting strip. In a further alternative arrangement, two separate connecting strips are used on opposite ends of the article of footwear.

  • Patent number: 4450634
Abstract: Quick release means for a pair of footwear. The quick release means enables one to readily extract one's feet from the footwear without the use of one's hands. In that regard, each footwear of the pair includes a notch in the toe portion of the outsole and a projection extending generally upwardly from the heel portion. The removal of the footwear is accomplished when one positions his or her feet so that a portion of the outsole of one of said pair of footwear overlies the projection of the other of said pair, with the notch receiving the projection, therein. This enables the wearer to readily extract one of his or her feet from one of the footwear. Obviously, to extract both feet, the first foot is only partially extracted from the footwear initially selected for removal, enabling that same footwear to then be used to extract the other foot from its footwear.

  • Patent number: 4450635
Abstract: A snow plow blade skid shoe is angularly adjusted during mounting upon the plow moldboard for leveling the shoes ground contacting pad. The shoe includes a pair of spaced apart brackets which are secured to the moldboard by bolts extending through the pre-existing bolt holes used for bolting the plow blade to the moldboard. An elongated shoe pad extends horizontally between the lower edges of the brackets and is initially secured thereto by a bendable connector. Plate-like arms, fastened to the pad, are loosely positioned adjacent the brackets. When the plow mounted blade is initially lowered until its bottom edge engages the ground, the pressure between the pad and ground causes the pad to angularly turn, thereby bending the connector, to level the pad in full face to face contact with the ground and parallel to the blade bottom edge. Then the arms are welded to their adjacent bracket portions for fixing the pad position.

  • Patent number: 4450636
Abstract: A picture frame having two principal elements, a planar backing board and a flexible annular material element formed substantially as two discs with a central aperture therein, the discs being attached to each other at their perimeters. Biasing means, such as an elastic band, are affixed to the cloth adjacent the apertures and are such that when the discs are placed over the backing board the elastic biases the apertures radially inwardly, thereby holding the outer element onto the backing board. In another embodiment a rigid element is substituted for the elastic element at the front of the frame, thereby defining a fixed shape through which the picture is presented.

  • Patent number: 4450638
Abstract: A photograph display device is formed from a generally rectangular strip of cardboard, folded and scored to define a plurality of panels and hinge lines. In a collapsed state the panels provide an envelope for mailing a photograph, and in an erect state, an easel with a rectangular display frame. The easel is supported by a cylindrical base whose ends are scored to permit bevelling relative to the back of the display frame. With the ends bevelled, the device can be oriented in either a first position with the base rested lengthwise on a horizontal surface or a second position substantially 90 degrees rotated relative to the first with either of the bevelled ends of the base rested on a horizontal surface. The device can thus orient a rectangular photograph for proper viewing regardless whether the lengthwise axis of the photograph should be horizontally or vertically oriented.
