  • Patent number: 4452037
Abstract: Apparatus is disclosed for automatically purging oil from the jets supplying lubricant to bearings and seals in a turbine engine after shutdown. To accomplish this task, pressurized air is tapped from the air plenum just downstream of the engine compressor stage. The pressurized air is stored in a small tank using an air check valve in the incoming line so that the air tank is charged to the highest pressure achieved by the engine compressor during its operation. The outlet of the air tank is connected to the oil jets used for lubricating the engine bearings and seals. A snap action valve is inserted in the air supply line to activate and deactivate airflow out of the tank. The snap action valve is designed to be switched "off" whenever there is positive oil pressure in the lubricating supply line of the turbine engine. After engine shutdown, lubricant flow drops, reducing oil pressure to zero.

  • Patent number: 4452040
Abstract: A diesel engine is provided with a soot particle catcher. When the soot particle catcher is heavy with accumulation of soot, while the engine is operating a combustion chamber thereof is supplied with a purging supply of diesel fuel at a timing point at which heat produced by combustion of this diesel fuel within the combustion chamber is not substantially converted into mechanical work, but is vented to the exhaust system in the exhaust gases substantially completely. Thus the soot catcher is heated up, and is purged by combusting the accumulation of soot particles in it. This timing point may be the later part of the expansion stroke of the piston of the combustion chamber. The amount of this purging fuel supply may be arranged to be just enough completely to use up by combustion all excess oxygen in the combustion chamber at the timing point.

  • Patent number: 4452041
Abstract: A torque absorbing coupling for a hydrostatic steering system which a hydrostatic steering controller responds to operation of a steering wheel to direct flow from a source to a steering motor. The coupling minimizes the possibility of a high reaction torque being felt by the operator who turns the steering wheel more rapidly than the system can deliver flow and pressure to the controller to levels which are sufficient to effect steering as demanded by the operator. The coupling is provided between the steering wheel and the controller's metering unit, and operates to absorb reaction torques over a time interval, and thereby delays transmission of those reaction torques to the operator over that time interval, to provide the system with an additional time interval to increase flow and pressure to the levels demanded.

An axial relative movement is caused between a punch fitted in the cylindrical portion and a die fitted around the same, so that a plastic deformation is caused on the cylindrical surface to form grooves or teeth in the cylindrical surface, while applying a tension to the material of the cylindrical portion presenting the cylindrical surface.

Abstract: Disclosed is a high-efficiency manufacturing installation in which seamless steel pipe rolling and finishing lines are matched in capacity with each other and are formed into a single continuous lines. The high-speed rolling line extends to a straightening machine via a cooling equipment for as-rolled pipes and a heat treating equipment for pipes to be heat-treated and is further connected to a single-line finishing line via a nondestructive inspection machine and a cutting machine. The finishing line comprises each plurality of different finishing machines arranged along a variable feed pitch transverse transfer line, the plural number being selected in correspondence to the capacity of the rolling line. The cooling equipment and the heat treating equipment are designed so that each of them requires the same transfer time and thus there is no danger of causing any blank in the feed pitch spacing during the change-over between the as-rolled pipes and the pipes to be heat-treated.

Abstract: A cathode lid of a battery container having a peripheral portion U letter shaped in section, with the outer peripheral side formed thicker than the inner peripheral side, and a side formed thicker than the inner peripheral side, and a method of manufacturing the same. In a process of manufacture of the anode lid, the periphery of a blank of a disk is bent in one direction vertical to the surface thereof, thereby to achieve a structure of a vessel having a bent periphery and then the vessel structure is subjected to paired working processes of punch and knockout, whereby a pressing force is exerted so that the edge of the bent periphery and the central portion of the main flat portion of the blank comes to to be close to each other in the direction vertical to the surface of the blank. As a result, the periphery is formed to be U letter shaped in section, while the central portion is maintained flat.

Abstract: A process is disclosed for forming pipe fitting components, in particular for the manufacture of three-piece unions made of steel and formed by cold deformation operations, by subjecting lengths of tubes cut to size to stresses substantially applied in an axial direction by the use of dies designed for acting upon at least a portion of the wall of the connecting pieces to be formed. The pipe fitting components obtained by the above process are made of steel and have peculiar features as to their size and shape.

Abstract: A tube bender comprising a body having an upwardly opening hook at a front end thereof and having a bottom surface defined by a convexly arcuate bending shoe extending rearwardly from the hook has movable indicators, one for each of a plurality of bend angles, each of which rises to a signalling position when a tube being bent attains its bend angle. Each indicator has a pin-like shank slidable in a bore in the body that opens to the bottom surface near the vertical plane of symmetry of the shoe and at a location where a tube being bent contacts that surface upon attaining the bend angle for the indicator. A head on the indicator normally rests on an upwardly facing surface on the body to which the bore opens upwardly, with the shank projecting below said bottom surface. The head comes flush with an upwardly facing signalling surface on the body when the bend angle is attained.

Abstract: The present analyzing apparatus provides a means for vapor phase analysis of process streams containing a non-condensable phase, and a condensable phase wherein the phases are variously comprised of hydrogen, water, oxides of carbon, aliphatic hydrocarbons and aromatic hydrocarbons. A sample is passed into a first separation means wherein the aromatic hydrocarbons are separated from the hydrogen, water, oxides of carbon and aliphatic hydrocarbon. The hydrogen, water oxides of carbon and aliphatic hydrocarbons are passed in a second separation means while the aromatic hydrocarbons are held in the first separation, and separated into the constituent elements and compounds and thereafter passed into a first detection means wherein the concentration of each constituent is determined. The aromatic hydrocarbons are passed from a first separation means to a third separation means where the aromatic hydrocarbons are separated into the constituent compounds.

Abstract: A method of sensing a knocking taking place in an internal combustion engine through the sensing of pulsative component of the cooling water pressure or lubricating oil pressure. The sensing of the pulsative component is made by removing the static component from the composite pressure which is the sum of the pulsative component and the static component. An apparatus for sensing a knocking taking place in an internal combustion engine has a differential pressure sensing mechanism including a pressure sensing diaphragm and a pulsation absorption mechanism. The pressure sensing diaphragm receives at its one side the composite cooling water pressure or composite lubricating oil pressure which is the sum of the pulsative component and static component. The pulsation absorption mechanism absorbs the pulsative component from the composite pressure so as to transmit only the static component of the pressure to the other side of the pressure sensing diaphragm.

Abstract: Tungsten halogen lamps require a fill pressure of several atmospheres. To verify the fill pressure at the time of manufacture the pressure is indirectly measured by first measuring the speed of sound within the lamp. A shock wave is produced within the lamp by rapidly heating a lamp filament or producing an arc between two adjacent filaments and measuring the time required for the shock wave to sequentially disturb two spaced light beams passing through the lamp. The speed of sound is determined from the measured time and the pressure is calculated from the speed of sound.
