  • Patent number: 4472935
Abstract: A method and apparatus are disclosed for the utilization of energy in gas of low heating value. The low heating value gas is preheated, mixed with an amount of air that will provide oxygen in an amount that will limit the maximum temperature rise in a catalytic combustion chamber to avoid excessive temperatures, and delivered into the catalytic combustion chamber at a temperature exceeding about 400.degree. F. that will cause ignition of the combustibles on contact with the catalyst. In a preferred embodiment, combustion is accomplished in two combustion chambers connected in series with a heat exchanger between the combustion chambers for cooling the combustion products discharged from the first combustion chamber before they are delivered to the next combustion chamber. Approximately fifty percent of the total combustion air is mixed with the combustible gas before delivery into each of the combustion chambers.

  • Patent number: 4472940
Abstract: A master cylinder, according to the present invention comprises a primary piston and a secondary piston disposed within a bore of a cylinder housing in tandem relationship. The secondary piston has a sectional area facing to a secondary pressure chamber, which area is smaller than that of the primary piston facing a primary pressure chamber. The hydraulic pressure in the secondary chamber is regulated by a regulator valve means provided opposing thereto. The regulator valve means becomes operative when the hydraulic pressure applied to the secondary pressure chamber exceeds a predetermined value. Due to the difference of the sectional area between the primary piston and the secondary piston which respectively face to the primary and secondary pressure chambers, hydraulic pressure to be applied to the front and rear wheel cylinders is varied to reduce the pressure in the rear wheel cylinder for preventing skidding of the vehicle.

  • Patent number: 4472965
Abstract: A method for preventing damage to a temperature-dependent resistor disposed in a flow cross-section caused by overheating as a result of the ignition of a combustible, gaseous mixture during a burnoff process and an air flow rate measuring device for performing the method are proposed. The air flow rate measuring device includes a temperature-dependent resistor disposed in a bypass line. Deposits on the surface of the temperature-dependent resistor are removed in a burnoff process, preferably following the opening of the ignition switch. The danger then exists that if the device is used in a motor vehicle, combustible fuel-air mixture located in the vicinity of the temperature-dependent resistor may ignite, and the temperature-dependent resistor would thereby be destroyed because of overheating. For this reason, a slide member is pushed into the flow cross-section during the burnoff process, so that only a small combustible volume is available in the vicinity of the temperature-dependent resistor.

  • Patent number: 4472968
Abstract: A fuel-gauging system has a capacitive probe comprising an outer tubular electrode and a coaxial inner electrode. The outer electrode is supplied with an alternating signal from an oscillator, the inner electrode being connected to a detector unit via a resistor. The resistor is mounted between the electrodes about midway along the length of the probe, the resistor having a value that is selected to give a substantially linear output of the probe and is at least 0.1 of the reactance of the probe, preferably being about 0.3595 of the reactance. The resistor may be connected to a phase-sensitive circuit that is controlled by a phase-shift circuit which receives the input signals to the probe and shifts their phase by 90.degree., so as to produce an output that is in phase with the probe output. In this case the value of the resistor is preferably 0.2178 of the probe reactance.

  • Patent number: 4472973
Abstract: An ultrasonic flaw detecting apparatus of electronically scanning type comprises a plurality of ultrasonic vibrator elements disposed in an arcuate array, wherein groups of N vibrator elements arrayed in the circumferential direction of an object under test are sequentially changed over to one another on one-by-one base to thereby scan an object under test with ultrasonic beams. By controlling phases of pulse signals applied to the individual vibrator elements, a region of focus of the ultrasonic beams is set at a predetermined depth of the object under test. For reception, only the echoes reflected from a predetermined focal range are selectively extracted by providing corresponding window or gate means.

  • Patent number: 4472974
Abstract: A roller-type ultrasonic inspection device for inspecting vehicle tires comprises a roller assembly 20 mounted on a non-rotatable hug 16. Two piezoelectric crystals 80,82 are mounted in the hub 16 such that their principal transmitting/receiving axes A and B converge generally radially outwardly of the hub. The angle between the axes A and B is selected such that when the roller assembly 20 is urged into rolling contact with the tread-bearing surface of a tire 90, the axes meet (allowing for refraction effects) in the body of the tire beneath the tread. This ensures that the device can detect defects in the body of the tire, and is relatively insensitive to the tread.

  • Patent number: 4472975
Abstract: In the ultrasonic inspection of test pieces, particularly tubular materials, a device for coupling a transducer to the surface of the test material, by a liquid medium, incorporates desirable features of both "contact" and "immersion" transducers. Disclosed is a coupler the housing of which has a cavity having a water supply inlet and an air exhaust vent. Water flow into the cavity if so controlled as to initially purge air from the cavity to fill it with water, after which the water flow is at a carefully controlled rate effective to keep the cavity filled while supplying fresh water only to the extent necessary to make up for water leaking out through a narrow gap defined between the test piece and the face plate of the disclosed coupler. The water within the cavity provides a liquid couplant between the test piece and a transducer carried by a holder mounted in the cavity for precision adjustment.

  • Patent number: 4472976
Abstract: Apparatus for measuring at least one component of the forces applied to a beam comprises supports at a pair of spaced locations along the beam, each support having an arm, the arms extending axially toward each other. One arm carries a displacement sensor and the other arm carries a transmission element coupled to the moveable part of the displacement sensor. Each support represents arbitrary points d and e, and measurement of the component parallel to a straight line through the displacements of the point d with respect to the point e makes it possible to obtain the above-mentioned component. This result is independent of the position of the resultant of the forces applied to the beam with respect to the point of measurement.
