  • Patent number: RE31816
Abstract: Tobacco ribs which are separated from laminae are contacted by steam at a temperature of approximately 150 degrees whereby the steam condenses on the surfaces of ribs and the thus released heat promotes the penetration of condensate into as well as gradual evaporation of initial moisture and condensate in the interior of ribs to thereby increase the specific volume of the ribs. The ribs are agitated during contact with and are caused to float in steam. Warm water is sprayed onto the ribs during contact with steam. The contact with steam prior to start of expansion takes up approximately one minute, and the ribs remain in contact with steam for another minute to effect expansion by evaporated moisture. The thus treated ribs are immediately rolled, severed and dried. The volume of ribs can be increased still further by contacting the severed ribs, prior to drying, with steam and water to bring about additional evaporation of moisture in the interior of severed ribs.

  • Patent number: RE31817
Abstract: A batch of raisins in which moldy raisins are mixed with sound ones is immersed in a hot water bath, causing the moldy raisins to assume a mushy and sticky texture while leaving the texture of the sound raisins substantially unaffected. The batch of raisins is then dropped onto a laterally inclined conveyor belt. The conveyor belt moves the raisins over a framework which is rapidly moved up and down to slap the underside of the belt, causing the raisins to bounce up and down on the continuously moving conveyor. The sound raisins, which have retained their firm texture, are bounced substantially higher than the moldy raisins, and thus, bounce down off the side of the conveyor as they move along the length of the conveyor. Because of their mushy texture, the moldy raisins do not bounce as high as the sound ones and therefore do not as readily bounce downward off the conveyor. Instead, they are carried along and off the end of the conveyor.

  • Patent number: 4495697
Abstract: A plasterboard trimming tool includes a main support element that consists of two parallel arms interconnected by a web and having lateral guiding surfaces which face one another and confine the marginal portion of the plasterboard between themselves in operation. A transverse guiding surface is provided on the web itself and/or an auxiliary support element which is selectively mountable on the web. A pair of cutting blades is mounted in respective holders at the same distance from the transverse guiding surface, the cutting blades having respective cutting edges which partially penetrate into the plasterboard to form continuous straight scoring cuts therein across the plasterboard from one another. The position of the auxiliary support element on the web can be reversed. The auxiliary support element has elongated sections of different thicknesses extending along the web, so that the distance of the scoring cuts from the edge face can be changed by reversing the position of the auxiliary support element.

  • Patent number: 4495698
Abstract: A concavely ground knife blade has a pair of side faces characterized by oppositely-directed, continuous, slightly concave surfaces. Such surfaces have an arcuate profile approximately fitting a large (e.g., 30 inch) radius circle and follow essentially straight line axes which gradually bend toward one another to form a point. The side faces are first ground widthwise along a diameter of a grinding wheel having an end face beveled at a shallow angle to form a frustoconical grinding surface. The side faces are then polished lengthwise. The resultant blade has a median thickness in its midportion which is nearer the back of the blade than the cutting edge.

  • Patent number: 4495700
Abstract: An apparatus for measuring the angular displacement of two objects relative to each other. The apparatus includes a graduated plate which is attached to a rotatable shaft which is rigidly secured to a first object to be measured. The annular displacement of the graduated plate is measured by a scanning unit. The scanning unit and graduated plate are enclosed within a housing which is rigidly secured to a second object. The scanning unit is supported upon the rotatable shaft and secured by a coupling system to the housing so that it will not rotate with the shaft. The coupling system allows translational movements of the scanning unit with respect to the housing in planes perpendicular to the axis of the shaft without impairing the measurement accuracy of the scanning unit.
