  • Patent number: 4545087
Abstract: A toothbrush has a handle and a head portion in which tufts of bristles are mounted in two different types of supports. Supports of a first type are mounted in the head portion for oscillation about axes perpendicular to the length of the bristles so as to be oscillated by rectilinear motion of the toothbrush on the teeth. At least one rack is connected with inner ends of supports of the first type so as to be reciprocated by oscillation of the supports. Supports of a second type are mounted in the head portion for rotation about axes parallel to the length of the bristles. Pinions on the inner ends of supports of the second type mesh with the rack or racks connected with supports of the first type so that the pinions and respective supports of the second type are rotated upon reciprocation of the rack of racks by oscillation by supports of the first type.

  • Patent number: 4545095
Abstract: An extensible clasp is described for use with a watch strap of flat flexible material having at one end a portion formed with a loop fitted with a buckle and at the other end a portion providing apertures for the tongue of the buckle. The clasp comprises first and second elongated portions that are connected by a hinge pin. The outer end of the first elongated portion is pivotally mounted on one of two pins of a link element, the other pin being fitted in said loop after removal of the buckle. The second elongated portion consists of a flattened sleeve into which the apertured end portion of the strap is inserted and secured by a screw. The strap thus becomes continuous and is unlikely to slip off when being fitted round a wrist. To close the clasp, the two elongated portions are folded against each other and a hole near the outer end of the first elongated portion is pressed into locking engagement with a beak element on the second elongated portion.

  • Patent number: 4545099
Abstract: The warp threads presented from a curtain of threads are slightly spread apart and tensioned by a constantly rotating tensioning shaft with an enlarged part. A sleeve with a screw-like guidance groove is slipped over the last part of the tensioning shaft, this sleeve being switched as needed by means of a coupling to be driven in synchronization with the tensioning shaft or to be shut off in a specific angular position. The sleeve is provided at its beginning with a knife-like guide beak which during rotation separates the outermost warp thread from the curtain of threads and deposits it into the guidance groove. The spacing between the turns of the groove corresponds to the spacing between the draw-in needles. When the sleeve is stopped, the separated warp threads individually deposited into the turns of the groove are arranged in the proper transfer position to the draw-in needles.

  • Patent number: 4545110
Abstract: A method of manufacturing a field effect device is set forth where the source and drain zones have extensions of an accurately and reproducibly determined length adjoining the gate electrode. According to the present invention, an oxygen-preventing insulating layer is formed on a first silicon layer forming the gate electrode, and a second silicon layer is provided on the oxygen-preventing layer. A part of the second silicon layer is removed and the edges substantially coincide with the edges of the gate electrode to be formed. The edges of the remaining part of the second silicon layer are oxidized. Through successive maskless selective etching steps, the first silicon layer is exposed and etched away at the area of the oxidized etched portions. The extensions of the source and drain zones are implanted through the openings thus obtained.

  • Patent number: 4545124
Abstract: A weld gauge for measuring the dimensions of welds between a base member and a workpiece extending outwardly from the base member at an angle, such as an acute angle or an obtuse angle. The gauge includes aplate having an arm pivotally mounted thereon for movement past a scale on the plate, the arm frictionally engaging the plate so that it can be adjustably put into any one of number of fixed positions along the scale for measurement purposes. The plate of the gauge has an upper margin which extends at an acute angle relative to the horizontal so that the gauge can be placed in the limited space formed by the workpiece extending at an acute angle relative to the base member. The scale is on one face of the plate.

  • Patent number: 4545125
Abstract: Apparatus for positioning a number of nondestructive dud detectors above a conveyor includes side support members to which a rotatable threaded positioning bar is mounted. The positioning bar includes a number of serially placed threaded positioning segments. The dud detectors are supported by the positioning bar through individual dud detector supports. Each dud detector support includes a threaded block which engages the threaded positioning bar. The threaded positioning segments have threads with different pitches. Rotation of the positioning bar cause the dud detectors to move axially along the positioning bar, and thus transversely over the conveyor belt, at unequal rates. The thread spacing or pitch for each threaded positioning segment is chosen so that the separation between adjacent dud detectors changes while keeping the dud detectors equally spaced.

  • Patent number: 4545126
Abstract: A method and apparatus for checking toothed articles such as splines. A spline is rotatably supported in a cradle, and a pair of discs, one of which is axially moveable, the other of which is axially fixed, are brought into engagement with generally parallel and oppositely directed teeth of the spline. The discs are of the same hand and are rotated in unison causing rotation of the spline in the cradle. Relative movement of the discs is monitored to provide a succession of span measurements in order to provide information which can be used to sort splines according to their deviation from designed dimensions.

  • Patent number: 4545128
Abstract: On a truck comprising tandem flangeless wheels riding on a single rail and four guide rollers rotatable on vertical axes, two at each side of the rail, crabbing and turning misalignments of the wheels are diagnosed from information about which rollers rotate during truck movement in each direction along the rail. For obtaining that information, a small reflective spot is delineated at an eccentric location on the upper surface of each roller, and a photoelectric sensor for each roller, magnetically attached to the truck, has its optical axis aimed at the orbit of the spot to issue an electrical impulse for each roller rotation. A signal device connected to each sensor issues a perceptible signal for each impulse. The signal devices are at a single console to facilitate comparisons of the number of revolutions made by the several rollers during a truck movement.

Abstract: A designer's triangle which permits completion of a drawing with the use of a single instrument includes a planar sheet having three external edges forming a triangle with angles of 45.degree., 60.degree. and 75.degree., respectively. The planar sheet defines three-sided first and second internal triangular cutout openings having respective edges lying along perpendiculars to edges of the external triangle and a trisector of the 45.degree. angle. In some preferred embodiments these perpendiculars intersect at a common point and may constitute altitudes of the external triangle.

Abstract: A method and apparatus for retarding electrochemical type decomposition of electrical insulation by flushing moisture from the insulation of installed power cables with a fluid having a low moisture content. The insulation of the power cables is dried and maintained dry by a continuous flow of dry fluid through the conductor and insulation while the cable is energized. An apparatus is disclosed which provides for the fluid to enter and exit from the cable. The disclosed method provides an effective retardation of the growth of electrochemical trees in the insulation structure and thereby significantly extends the useful life of the cable system.

  • Patent number: 4545134
Abstract: A vapor component of a gas mixture is separated by condensation and is recovered for further use. A solvent vapor mixed with inert gas is condensed in a multistage heat exchange system in a manner which utilizes a first refrigerant to condense a portion of the vapor in a first heat exchange device, a second refrigerant, typically cold inert gas, for condensing a further portion of the vapor in a second heat exchanger and a third heat exchange device wherein chilled liquid is utilized to condense a still further portion of the vapor. In a fourth heat exchange device, a cryogenic liquid is passed in heat exchange relation with the liquid passed thereto from the third heat exchange device. The cryogenic liquid is vaporized to form an essentially pure inert gas which is supplied to the vicinity of the oven exit and entrance, but exteriorly of the oven to form inert gas barriers. The fourth heat exchange device may effect direct or indirect heat exchange with the cryogenic liquid.
