  • Patent number: 4548034
Abstract: A bypass gas turbine aeroengine has an exhaust mixer of the lobed type. The trailing edges of the confronting sides of each lobe are cut back to form notches or scallops in the sides of the lobe. To reduce aerodynamic losses and engine length and weight, the final turbine stage within the engine core is without outlet guide vanes so that the turbine exhaust gas stream issuing from the turbine has a substantial swirl component of velocity. Correction back to an axial direction of mean flow at the downstream end of the exhaust mixer nozzle is achieved by making the area of the scallop in one of the confronting sides of each lobe greater than the area of the scallop in the other side, the arrangement being such that sufficient of the turbine exhaust stream effuses from the larger scallops in directions contrary to the swirl component of velocity to produce the desired correction.

  • Patent number: 4548052
Abstract: A steel strip (10) is conveyed through a galvanizing bath (20) of molten zinc, a zinc coating weight control device (12), and a minispangle box assembly (16). The steel strip emerges from the zinc coating weight control device (12) with a non-uniform temperature distribution across its width in which it is warmer in the center and cooler at its edges. A differential, pre-cooler assembly (18) cools the steel strip selectively and non-uniformly across its width in a manner which is complimentary to the temperature distribution thereacross. In this manner, the steel strip exits the pre-cooler assembly (18) and enters the minispangle box assembly (16) with a more uniform temperature distribution. This results in a more uniform minispangle appearance on the strip (10) as it exits the minispangle box assembly (16). The pre-cooler assembly includes a plurality of nozzle pairs (32a, 32b; 34a, 34b; 36a, 36b; 38a, 38b).

  • Patent number: 4548057
Abstract: This invention relates to a single- or double-Jersey knitted fabric which not only has a closed starting seam, but also a closed terminal seam (24, 24', 24") which can follow a line of any shape, and a method of making the same on a machine having stitch-forming elements and having an arrangement for transferring and racking the formed stitches. The closed terminal seam (24) of the fabric may for example be formed by transferring the last terminal seam stitch (16), then racking the same, and finally transferring it to the next seam stitch and then knitting the two transferred stitches with a thread (25, 22) which may be either a separate thread or one used to form the remainder of the fabric. The linking stitch so formed (31) is then racked again and the next-succeeding selvedge stitch transferred thereto before being knitted with the thread into a further linking stitch.
