  • Patent number: 4551865
Abstract: A ventilator for withdrawing foul air from a lavatory pan has, within a housing (16), a duct (11) for connection between the discharge pipe (31) of the lavatory flushing assembly and the flush pipe (33) of the lavatory pan. An extractor fan (41) is provided in the housing (16) for withdrawing air from the duct (11) by way of an air passage (28) therein and expelling it through an exhaust pipe (47) to atmosphere outside the lavatory. The air passage (28) may be opened or closed by a valve (27). The fan (41) may be switched on when the valve (27) is open. When the lavatory pan is flushed, water passing through the duct (11) moves a cup (25) connected to the valve (27) so as to close the valve (27) and switch off the fan (41).

  • Patent number: 4551866
Abstract: Apparatus for automatically returning a hinged toilet seat to the lower horizontal position after use of the toilet as a urinal by a male. An operating cylinder is easily attached to the toilet by an adjustable mounting system. A piston is reciprocally disposed in the cylinder and operably linked by a pivoting lever mechanism to the pivoted toilet seat. Movement of the toilet seat to the upper position actuates a biasing spring to urge the piston to move to return the seat to the lower position. The biased piston movement is retarded by operating fluid in the cylinder to delay closing until the male user is finished.

  • Patent number: 4551870
Abstract: A shower stall threshold structure has two opposed former sections formed of light weight plastic material and adapted to have mortar poured into the space therebetween. The sections are equipped with spacer members and connection bolts to hold the sections in proper spaced relationship until the mortar hardens. Openings through the former sections expose the mortar at the outer faces of the former sections so that tile placed on the sides of the threshold can be adhered to the mortar. One or both former sections may have tile supporting ledges projecting outwardly from their outer faces. A plastic sheet underlying the shower stall may have its edges turned upwardly within the threshold and held in place between the spacer members on the sections. Lines of weakness are provided in the former sections to permit portions of the sections to be broken off to reduce the height of the threshold.

  • Patent number: 4551880
Abstract: A vertical workpiece cleanser and dryer which includes a pair of chain-driven pocket elevators disposed in adjacent wash and rinse towers on bases which enclose associated wash and rinse solution reservoirs. Each elevator includes a plurality of spools cantilevered from a drive chain and extending in a vertical upwardly directed reach through a solution (wash or rinse) spray zone and then through an air spray zone for removing solution from the workpiece and elevator spools. The elevator within the solution spray zone is closely encompassed by a surrounding shroud for limiting volume available for expansion of sprayed solution, and thus reducing the tendency of the sprayed solution to vaporize. Vertical orientation of the elevator and alignment of the solution and air spray zones promote downward flow of excess solution through the solution spray zone for enhanced flush-washing of the workpieces, and return of excess solution to the associated reservoir disposed therebeneath.

  • Patent number: 4551889
Abstract: A low friction self-locking adjust tongue having a pair of depressed lands provided in the tongue plate either side of the web aperture to form a lock bar well. Cutouts provided in the tongue plate's upstanding flanges form in conjunction with said depressed lands a bi-level lock bar slot extending rearwardly and upwardly from the lock-bar well to above the plane of the tongue plate. In the unlatched position of the tongue plate, the lock bar rests in the lock bar well permitting the seat belt webbing to pass thereover with negligable friction. In the locked position, the lock bar is displaced towards the rear of the bi-level lock bar slot which raises the lock bar above the plane of the tongue plate. In this position, the friction between the lock bar and the seat belt webbing is sufficient to lock the seat belt webbing in the tongue plate after it is snuggly adjusted about the occupants pelvic region.

Abstract: A field-effect transistor (FET) and a corresponding method for its fabrication, the transistor having a source and a gate located at opposite faces of an active channel region formed in a substrate, the source being substantially shorter in effective length than the gate and located symmetrically with respect to the gate. The transistor also has two drains, located one at each end of the channel region, and charge carriers flow from the source to the drains in two paths, under control of the same gate. Electrical contact with the source is made from beneath the substrate, while contact with the gate and drains is made from above. The resulting device has a large incremental transconductance and relatively small parasitic impedances, and therefore can operate at much higher frequencies than conventional FET's.

Abstract: A method of fabricating MESFET devices having a submicron line gate electrode is disclosed. The method includes the formation of a single layer of resist material on a semiconductor surface; formation of a resist cavity through optical lithography, the cavity exposing a selected portion of the semiconductor surface; depositing by way of angled evaporation at least one gate wall within said resist cavity, the gate wall defining a shaped gate cavity; depositing gate electrode material within the gate cavity, and removing the resist material. In one embodiment of the invention the gate wall is removed from the gate electrode material, leaving a free-standing electrode. In another embodiment, the gate wall is a permanent part of the electrode structure.

Abstract: A semiconductor body having surface regions thereof isolated from other such regions by a pattern of dielectric isolation is provided. At least two narrow widths PN junction regions are located within at least one of the surface regions. Each PN junction has a width dimension substantially that of its electrical contact. Substantially vertical conformal conductive layers electrically ohmic contact each of the PN junction regions. The PN junction regions are the emitter and collector regions for a lateral bipolar transistor. A base PN junction region of an opposite conductivity is located between and contiguous to the emitter and the collector junctions. Substantially horizontal conductive layers are in electrical contact with an edge of each of the vertical conductive layers and separated from the surface regions by a first electrical insulating layer. A second insulating layer covers the conformal conductive layers.

  • Patent number: 4551908
Abstract: A process of forming electrodes and interconnections in a silicon semiconductor device comprises the steps of forming an insulating film on a silicon substrate, defining an opening in the insulating film, depositing a layer of metal having a high melting point on the insulating film, implanting ions to mix an interface between the metal layer and the silicon substrate, heating the construction in a temperature in the range of from 400 to 650 degrees Celsius to form a silicide of the metal layer in the opening, and selectively etching away an unreacted metal layer so as to self-align the silicide metal layer with the opening. The silicide metal layer is then annealed in a non-reducing gas atmosphere at a temperature ranging from 800 to 1,100 degrees Celsius.

  • Patent number: 4551909
Abstract: Junction field effect transistor, specifically a static induction transistor, and method of fabricating. A low resistivity N-type surface layer is formed at the surface of a high resistivity N-type epitaxial layer which has been grown on a low resistivity N-type substrate of silicon. The surface of the surface layer is coated with silicon dioxide and portions of the silicon dioxide layer are removed to expose alternating gate surface areas and source surface areas. P-type conductivity material is diffused into the silicon from the gate surface areas to produce zones of graded concentration. The difference in concentration of N-type conductivity imparting material in the surface layer and in the remainder of the epitaxial layer causes the resulting P-type gate regions to extend laterally toward each other so as to produce narrow channel regions at a depth beyond the surface layer while limiting the lateral extensions of the P-type gate regions adjacent to the surface.
