  • Patent number: 4696086
Abstract: A die set for assembling badges and buttons includes a punch and two dies. The badge shell and artwork are loaded onto the first die. The punch descends during a loading stroke to load the shell and artwork therein by friction. The second die is positioned under the punch, and the punch descends during an assembly stroke. The punch includes a block attached to the assembly machine ram and a spring loaded punch ring. The second die has a base a spring loaded crimp ring. The punch ring abuts the crimp ring during the assembly stroke. The punch block descends further, but the punch ring remains stationary against the crimp ring springs. The shell and artwork are thus partially pushed out of the punch and into the second die. Continued downward punch block motion overcomes the crimp ring springs and causes both the punch ring and crimp ring to move downwardly together, thereby pushing the shell and artwork over the badge back.

  • Patent number: 4696095
Abstract: A process is disclosed for improving the isolation between semi-oxide insulated devices, formed on mesa structures. In the fabrication of such devices, a silicon substrate is provided. Patterned regions of one type of conductivity are formed in a major surface of the substrate and an epitaxial layer of silicon is formed on the substrate over the major surface. A patterned mask layer is formed on the epitaxial layer and is etched to expose portions of the epitaxial layer. The exposed portions of the epitaxial layer are removed to form the mesa structures, which overlie the doped patterned regions. Regions of opposite conductivity, called channel stops, are then formed in the substrate between the patterned regions. After filling in the areas between the mesa structures with a field oxide, the devices (bipolar or MOS transistors) are formed on the mesa structures.

  • Patent number: 4696097
Abstract: Improved semiconductor devices having minimum parasitic junction area are formed by using multiple buried polycrystalline conductor layers to make lateral contact to one or more pillar-shaped epitaxial single crystal device regions. The lateral poly contacts are isolated from each other and from the substrate and have at least one polycrystalline pillar extending to upper surface of the device to permit external connections to the lower poly layer. The structure is made by depositing three dielectric layers with two poly layers sandwiched in between. Holes are anisotropically etched to the lowest poly layer and the substrate. A conformal oxide is applied over the whole structure and anisotropically etched to remove the bottom portions in the hole where the poly pillar and the isolation wall are to be formed and isotropically where the single crystal pillar is to be formed. The remaining oxide regions isolate the buried conductor layers, contacts, and isolation walls.

  • Patent number: 4696101
Abstract: A system for placing, soldering and inspecting component parts, such as soldered joints and electronic components, on a printed circuit board utilizes a transfer device for selecting and transferring specific electronic component parts to predetermined positions on a printed circuit board and holding each component part in the desired position by use of the transfer device during a reflow soldering operation to mechanically and electrically connect the component part to the printed circuit board. The reflow soldering utilizes a laser beam for injecting thermal energy into each soldered joint to melt the soldered material. An infrared detector senses thermal radiation and/or reflected radiation from the heated solder material to discontinue the application of the laser beam to the solder material upon liquifaction of the solder material.

  • Patent number: 4696102
Abstract: Apparatus (16) for gripping the inner surface of a plug (14) so that it can be removed from a tube (12). The apparatus includes a shaft (18) having an enlarged frustoconical head (20) with a collar member (24) surrounding the shaft. The collar has a plurality of flexible fingers (22) extending up therefrom, which are forced radially outwardly into contact with the inner wall of the plug when the head is moved longitudinally outwardly from the plug. Each finger has an end portion which is tapered and forms first (10 degrees) and second (5 degrees) angles on its inner (32) and outer (30) surfaces, respectively; and the frustoconical surface (34) of the enlarged head forms a third angle (15 degrees), with the sum of the first and second angles being equal to the third angle. The end portions of the fingers are thus moved radially outwardly, such that their outer surface lies parallel with the inner surface of the plug and thus, the plug is gripped over a large surface area by the gripping mechanism.
