  • Patent number: 4731963
Abstract: Verge unit is a symmetrical tapered channel converging toward one end and diverging toward another end. The unit 1 has two frangible portions which are disposed inwardly at the divergent end the removal of one of which portions allows the unit to be converted into a right hand or a left hand unit for use on a right hand or left hand verge of a roof. The units are placed over the free ends of tiles on a verge so that each divergent end of a unit is overlapped by a convergent end of an adjacent unit, thus providing a stepped line following the line of overlapping tiles along the upper edge of the verge and a straight line running along the lower edge. Verge units may be used for covering the free ends of tiles on tiled roofs to provide an aesthetically pleasing finish to the verge ends of tiled roofs and to prevent the ingress of rain and snow between the tiles.

  • Patent number: 4731984
Abstract: A baler has winding elements for forming a bale of crop. A formed bale is bound with binding material such as twine or wire from a binding mechanism. When a bale is fully formed, a cable is pulled by the operator of the tractor towing the baler which actuates the binding mechanism and simultaneously operates a change-speed gear to increase the speed of the winding elements. The bale thus rotates faster during binding than it does while it is being formed. This reduces time required for binding. When the bale has been bound, it is discharged through a door which pivots upwards for this purpose. Pivoting of the door pulls a further cable which returns the change-speed gear to the lower speed position and actuates the binding mechanism so that the next bale can be formed. The bale chamber is substantially cylindrical with rotatable elements around the interior of its curved sides.

  • Patent number: 4731992
Abstract: The invention relates to a fuel supply device for model aircraft. To produce an excess pressure in the fuel tank in order to force the fuel into the engine, the fuel tank is connected to an excess pressure chamber (4) of an exhaust constructed in the form of a silencer. The casing (1) of the exhaust is subdivided by partitions (5, 6) into a number of chambers lying axially one behind the other. The excess pressure chamber (4) and the chamber (3) disposed therebehind in the direction of flow and directly connected to the exhaust gas outlet (9) are interconnected via a valve arrangement (16-18) which so operates after the fashion of a non-return valve that the valves are throttled in dependence on the inclined position of the exhaust. During climbing throttling is particularly heavy, so that a heavier excess pressure is formed in the chamber and therefore higher delivery pressure acts on the fuel in the tank. In this way the engine is supplied with enough fuel even during climbing.

  • Patent number: 4731993
Abstract: An exhaust apparatus connected to a V-type internal combustion engine which is mounted in an engine compartment in a front part of a vehicle. The exhaust apparatus comprises a front exhaust manifold and a rear exhaust manifold connected to banks of the V-type engine respectively, an exhaust assembly connected to the exhaust manifolds and a catalytic converter interposed in the exhaust assembly. The wall thickness of the front exhaust manifold is made thinner than that of the rear exhaust manifold. By the thin front exhaust manifold, the heat capacity of the front exhaust path extending from the front exhaust manifold toward the catalytic converter is lessened, thereby suppressing the dropping of temperature of the exhaust gas flowing through the front exhaust path. As a result, the dropping of temperature of the exhaust gas reaching the catalytic converter is suppressed as a whole, and a catalyst in the catalytic converter is warmed up quickly to a required temperature.

Abstract: In a system with an energy storing and releasing device the latter comprises a high pressure accumulator and switching over device for the charging and discharging of the latter from and to a low pressure accumulator using a hydraulic transducer which is connected with a device able to provide and take up power. The switching over device consists of four 2/1 way shut off valves of which two respective ones are placed in parallel and connected with a respective accumulator. The 2/1 way shut off valves are so connected with the hydraulic transducer that by paired switching of a respective one of the two 2/1 way shut off valves associated with one accumulator either the one or the other accumulator may be connected with the power input of the hydraulic transducer and switching over may take place from the power output of the latter to the other accumulator. By the use of simple 2/1 shut off valves the switching over device is generally simplified to a substantial extent.

Abstract: A hydraulic system comprised of a pump, a first valve in the inlet to the pump, and a second valve which activates or deactivates a third valve which permits the loading and unloading of the pump discharge. A motor is provided to operate the first valve for opening or closing the pump inlet. This motor also actuates the second valve in concert with the operation of the first valve to open or close a vent port to the third valve which opens or closes the passage from the pump discharge to tank, located away from the pump inlet. This permits unloading the pump discharge during the restriction of the pump inlet and allows the loading of the pump discharge after the opening of the pump inlet. With the pump inlet restricted, the system provides a low restrictive passage for circulating the prescribed small volume of flow used to lubricate and cool the pump.

Abstract: A servo-assisted master cylinder assembly for a vehicle hydraulic braking system has a tandem master cylinder with primary and secondary pistons operative to pressurise primary and secondary pressure spaces for primary and secondary brake circuits. A servo chamber is defined behind the primary piston, and pressurisation of the servo chamber from a source of pressure fluid is controlled by a valve in response to an input force applied to the primary piston. The valve comprises a spool operated solely by pressure in the primary space and a bias force from servo pressure in a bias chamber and a spring. The secondary piston has a smaller effective area than the primary piston, so that the pistons are in abutment in their retracted positions. To reduce pedal travel, one of the brakes of the primary circuit can be supplied from the servo chamber instead of the primary pressure space.

Abstract: A turbocharger including an exhaust turbine and a compressor is controlled using a variable geometry apparatus at the inlet of the exhaust turbine and an exhaust bypass valve bypassing the exhaust turbine. Operating conditions of the engine driven by the turbocharger are detected as is the supercharging pressure produced by the compressor. A deviation between the detected supercharging pressure and a target supercharging pressure is calculated and integrated. A controlled variable is calculated for actuating at least one of the variable geometry apparatus and the exhaust bypass valve based on the operating conditions and a learned value. Feedback control is used to correct the controlled variable in accordance with the integrated value of the deviation. A determination is made as to an operating range in which feedback control is to be performed and the learning amount is calculated in accordance with the result of the operating range determination and the integrated value of the deviation.

  • Patent number: 4732005
Abstract: A method and apparatus for implementing a thermodynamic cycle, which includes the use of a composite stream, having a higher content of a high-boiling component than a working stream, to provide heat needed to evaporate the working stream. After being superheated, the working stream is expanded in a turbine. Thereafter, the expanded stream is separated into a spent stream and a withdrawal stream. The withdrawal stream is combined with a lean stream to produce a composite stream. The composite stream evaporates the working stream and preheats the working stream and the lean stream. The composite stream is then expanded to a reduced pressure. A first portion of this composite stream is fed into a gravity separator. The liquid stream flowing from the gravity separator forms a portion of the lean stream that is combined with the withdrawal stream. The vapor stream flowing from the separator combines with a second portion of the composite stream in a scrubber.

Abstract: The baffle for controlling flow of chilled air through the divider wall between the frozen food and fresh food compartments of a refrigerator is coupled to a motor driven cam which indexes the baffle open or closed in response to commands from a conventional control unit. Electrical switches for controlling the compressor and defrost heater of the refrigerator are positioned axially along the cam to be operated selectively by concentric cam surfaces as the cam is rotated by the motor. A cam follower engages another concentric cam surface to operate another set of switches to apply rotational positional feedback signals to the control unit. The cam surfaces are shaped and the baffle is coupled to the cam such that unidirectional rotation of the cam in response to commands from the control unit operates the switches synchronously with the baffle to selectively cool the frozen food and fresh food compartments and defrost the evaporator.
