Patent number: 4895678Abstract: A method for thermal decomposition treatment of a radioactive waste uses an apparatus comprising a container for holding molten matter of a radioactive waste containing a sodium compound, a pair of electrodes contacting the molten matter, and a power source for applying voltage between the electrodes while changing the polarity thereof every several tens of seconds. In this apparatus, the molten matter can be heated in the container by Joule heat, which is evolved by electric current directly flowed through the molten matter, so that the sodium compound contained in the radioactive waste can be decomposed, vaporized and removed to recover a stabilized radioactive solid as a residue in the container.Type: GrantFiled: June 8, 1989Date of Patent: January 23, 1990Assignee: Doryokuro Kakunenryo Kaihatsu JigyodanInventors: Katsuyuki Ohtsuka, Jin Ohuchi, Hideaki Tamai

Patent number: 4895684Abstract: The heat-sink capacity of a well-insulated dome curing press lends itself to saving external steam (flowed over the exterior of a mold in the press) when curing an article. Despite shutting off the external steam at about the half-way point in the normal heating cycle, or sooner, the temperature swing at a point 2 inches within the mold is less than 10.degree. F. This small swings allows the point of least cure (PLC) to receive the required number of cure equivalents long after the external steam supply is shut off, that is, while the press is "coasting". In the mean while, the internal heating and cooling cycle of the press may also be shortened for maximum energy savings, or left unchanged. Though the external steam is shut off before the PLC has received the required or specified number of cure equivalents at the PLC, the press-open to press-close cycle remains the same, and the quality of the cure is not measurably affected.Type: GrantFiled: December 10, 1988Date of Patent: January 23, 1990Assignee: The Uniroyal Goodrich Tire CompanyInventor: William F. Patent number: 4895707Abstract: Meander-shaped exhaust gas ducts pass through a soot burn-off filter made of porous ceramic filter material. Catalytically coated blind ducts branch from each of the outer bends to receive and combust solid combustion residues from the exhaust gases. The residual gases produced in the blind ducts by the oxidation of the combustion residues pass through the filter material into adjacent discharge ducts and are transported from there to the outside of the filter. In this way the exhaust gas ducts remain largely free of solid combustion residues, display no clogging phenomena and therefore keep the exhaust gas backpressure low. This improves the starting behavior of an engine, achieves more favorable warm-up behavior and has a positive influence upon the response behavior of an exhaust gas turbocharger.Type: GrantFiled: February 16, 1989Date of Patent: January 23, 1990Assignee: Daimler-Benz AktiengesellschaftInventor: Michael Kuhn

Patent number: 4895725Abstract: Microcapsules containing oil-based biologically active compounds which are stable over extended time periods for release of the encapsulated compound in the intestine. There are a number of biologically active compounds having an oil base which must be orally ingested in order to have a beneficial effect. An example of one such biologically active oil-based compound is a fish oil having a high content of polyunsaturated omega-3 fatty acids which has been demonstrated to reduce plasma levels of triglycerides, very low density lipoprotein, low density lipoproteins and cholesterol in normal and hyperlipidemic subjects. The disclosed microcapsules eliminate the unfortunate problems of the unpleasant taste and smell of the fish oil, as well as the aftertaste, particularly when ingested in large quantities, and provide a palatable and practical means of ingesting efficacious quantities of fish oil. In addition, the normal oxidation of polyunsaturated fatty acids is inhibited.Type: GrantFiled: April 4, 1988Date of Patent: January 23, 1990Assignee: Clinical Technologies Associates, Inc.Inventors: Martin L.
