Patent number: 4916850Abstract: A line attachment device for fixing objects to a line such as a fishing line, a string or a piece of rope. The device includes a shank or stem securable to the object to be fixed. The line attaching portion of the device includes a plug fixed to the stem, a cleat next to the plug and extended outward from it, and a cap with a central opening that fits snuggly over the plug. To fix the line to the device, an open loop is formed in the line and is trained through the opening in the cap when the cap is removed from the plug. The loop is drawn over the end of the plug and over the cleat such that it bears against the cleat when pulling toward the plug. The cap is then secured on the plug to hold the loop in place. The loop is secured on the cleat and is prevented by the cap from passing over the cleat whereby the line is secured to the line ataching device and thus to the object.Type: GrantFiled: August 21, 1989Date of Patent: April 17, 1990Inventor: Paul A. Patent number: 4916853Abstract: In the manufacture of welded pipes, edge buckling or waving of the strip is prevented by heating. In one method, during the process for bending the strip into a tubular form, the edges of the strip are heated so that tensile stress exerted thereon is reduced to a minimum and, thereafter, before the edges are abutted against each other, the strip is wholly heated so that the compressive stress exerted on the edges is reduced to a minimum. According to another mode, during the process for bending the strip gradually into a tubular form or during the process in which the edges of the strip are held in abutment against each other, the strip except its portions of the edges is substantially or partially heated so that the strip except its portions of the edges is subjected to compressive stress while the portions of the edges are subjected to tensile stress, and under these conditions the edges are welded together.Type: GrantFiled: June 30, 1987Date of Patent: April 17, 1990Inventors: Shigetomo Matsui, Hisao Hasegawa

Patent number: 4916854Abstract: The spinner is formed of a thin film of a type and gauge that normally retains its shape but at the same time is flexible. The spinner has shrink points on opposite side edges of the rounded end portions which are offset from each other relative to the center of the body portion and which due to the distortion of the material at the shrink points form propeller-like, cupped end portions. In the method of forming the spinner, the blank is cut with the rounded end portions and narrowed body portion. The blank is formed into a propeller-like spinner with cupped blades and a propeller pitch by shrinking the film at points of the rounded end portions which are offset from each other and on opposite sides of the longitudinal center.Type: GrantFiled: August 14, 1989Date of Patent: April 17, 1990Inventor: Donald G. Patent number: 4916855Abstract: It is highly desirable to reinforce the grassed surface layer of a sports ground in order to reduce damage to the surface, e.g. from horse racing or from playing football. In order to provide a good surface layer, a biaxially-orientated, integrally-extruded plastics material mesh structure layer is laid on a base of sand strengthened with small, flexible, randomly-placed, plastics material mesh pieces. A top dressing is put on top of the mesh structure layer, grass is seeded or planted, and a machine is then used after the grass has grown to slit the mesh structure layer into pieces 1 which may be e.g. 100.times.100 mm or 150.times.150 mm, each having a number of complete mesh openings. If a piece is caught by a horse's hoof or by an footballer's stud, it may be ripped out, but the whole mesh layer is not ripped out.Type: GrantFiled: March 30, 1988Date of Patent: April 17, 1990Assignees: The Royal Hong Kong Jockey Club, Netlon LimitedInventors: John Halliday, Keith F.
