  • Patent number: 5185918
Abstract: An improved method of manufacture of a shorted turn copper bar rotor which is amenable to high volume production and which provides a copper-to-copper electrical bond among the conductor bar end turn portions at each end of the rotor core. Once the rotor core laminations have been assembled on the rotor shaft, and the conductor bars have been inserted into the core slots, a cylinder or spool element is positioned in abutment with each axial end of the core to define annular cavities into which the conductor bar end turn portions extend. Each cavity has a continuous opening for permitting access to the end turn portions lying therein, and a molten copper plasma is sprayed into the opening of each cavity, thereby forming a copper-to-copper electrical bond among the end turn portions extending from each end of the core. The ends of the assembly are then shortened as necessary by machining to provide the required current carrying capacity.

  • Patent number: 5185921
Abstract: A tubular anode includes an electrical connector formed of a diagonally split two-part generally cylindrical slug. The diagonal slit provides an elliptical wedge interface between the two parts and a jack screw is threaded in one part and extends through an enlarged hole in the other. Tightening the jack screw within the tube causes the two parts to offset and wedge against the inside of the tube. The two parts include an aligned slot which interests the major axis of the elliptical interface and a lead wire or cable is electrically secured to one of the parts within its slot. The slot is configured to press the lead or cable against the interior of the tube. The lead wire for a string anode extends through the slot of the other part. In the formation of an anode string the tubular anodes are threaded onto unspooled insulated wire or cable, a short portion of the insulation is removed at each connector location, and with the tubular anode offset, a connector is secured to the bare wire.

  • Patent number: 5185922
Abstract: Microelectrodes and methods for making the same are disclosed which have electrode tip diameter of less than 10 .mu.m. The microelectrodes include a tapered electrode wire sealed in, and surrounded by, a tapered insulator tube. In one preferred embodiment, an annealed platinum wire approximately 75 .mu.m in diameter is inserted in an insulator tube, such as a borosilicate pipette, having an inner diameter of approximatley 600 .mu.m. The pipette is heated to the softening temperature of borosilicate and drawn using a conventional pulling technique. As the inner diameter of the pipette draws down, it engages the annealed platinum wire and causes the wire to also draw down in diameter. Careful selection of the relative diameters of the pipette and the platinum wire ensure that the two will break at essentially the same time thereby forming a microelectrode having a platinum disk electrode of less than 10 .mu.m diameter.

  • Patent number: 5185925
Abstract: A condenser having two piece die formed condenser tube parts that are joined along a beveled outer edge. The tube material is braze cladded on both sides for corrosion resistance and for high quality internal braze bonding of (1) longitudinal tube webs for optimizing burst strength, and (2) the tubes to associated air centers which are not cladded for an economical unit. The tubes can be readily made in a multiport or single port design by die forming the longitudinal webs in each tube part, and at discreet lengths along the tube length to provide a cut off area for sizing the tube and a smooth circumferential area where the tube parts with a beveled outer edge enter the header providing a close fit and high quality brazed joints. This tube design provides material and cost advantages over the conventional extruded tubes or roll formed condenser tubes and is readily fabricated using corrosion resistant alloys providing long service life.

  • Patent number: 5185937
Abstract: Methods for verifying the mechanical integrity of an alignment bracket, particularly a multi-configurable alignment bracket, used for aligning co-rotatable in-line machine shafts, and for determining the amount of alignment bracket "sag" to be accounted for when subsequently employing readings taken with the alignment bracket. The invention employs a previously-established relationship between sag and deflection of the alignment bracket under the influence of a known force to determine sag and to verify mechanical integrity of the alignment bracket in situ, avoiding the need for the usual prealignment sag determination on a separate straight pipe or mandrel. In the practice of the method, the alignment bracket is set up in a position for use, on the actual shafts being aligned. The extension bar of the alignment bracket is positioned above the centerlines of the shafts, and a known force is applied by hanging a known weight at a predetermined point on the alignment bracket.

  • Patent number: 5185938
Abstract: An attachment securable to the chuck of a hand-held power drill and adapted to clamp either a paint brush or a paint roller, so as to spin the same for cleaning by centrifugal force. The attachment is made of three separate parts, namely: a jaw unit, a sleeve and a cap nut, the latter provided with a spindle for insertion into the power tool chuck. The jaw unit includes a screw portion threaded within the cap nut and having a cylindrical extension in turn extended by a pair of spring jaws for receiving therebetween and clamping the narrower portion of a paint brush handle adjacent the brush bristles. A sleeve surrounds the arms of the two jaws and its opposite ends engage the cap nut and conical wedging surfaces of the jaw heads. Rotation of the cap nut with respect to the jaw unit causes axial movement of the sleeve which in turn causes retraction of the jaw to clamp the brush handle. The outer surface of the sleeve has paint roller clamping ribs to hold a paint roller around the sleeve.

  • Patent number: 5185950
Abstract: A trolling device for a fishing lure includes a frame to be towed through water. A spool on the frame has a length of fishing line for connection to a fishing lure. A drive means driven by the force of water as the frame is towed through water causes the line to wind upon the spool. The drive means is periodically disengaged to allow the spool to freewheel and the line to unwind. Thus, the lure will alternately accelerate toward the frame and drop back from the frame as the frame is towed through water. A selectively operable pause means is provided to delay retrieval of a lure toward the frame for a predetermined period of time, and further means are provided to disengage the drive means from the spool upon application of excessive force to the towing line.
