  • Patent number: 5201331
Abstract: A vapor containment apparatus for washing an ink pump and sucker tube with a volatile ink solvent has a closed receptacle with a liquid solvent sump. An elongated sleeve encases the sucker tube within the receptacle and positions an inlet end of the sucker tube in the sump. A solvent applicator directs solvent into contact with an outer surface of the sucker tube to drain into the sump and wash the outer surface. An solvent return tube delivers solvent from the ink pump to the sump such that solvent can be drawn through the sucker tube and the pump to wash the pump and the inner surface of the sucker tube. A vacuum exhaust draws solvent vapor through openings on the elongated sleeve and the return tube and evacuates the vapor from the closed receptacle.

  • Patent number: 5201338
Abstract: A water distribution system includes flushing hydrants having buried valve assemblies and a removable top stock carried from valve assembly to valve assembly. A vertical marker replaces the top stock when the hydrant is not in use. The buried valve assembly includes a valve urged closed by water pressure and an actuator rod extending through a spider in the top of a vertical barrel. A lock nut on the upper end of the actuator holds the valve closed even if water pressure is lost. The upper end of the vertical barrel includes an internally threaded adapter. The top stock includes a casing which is externally threaded to mate with the adapter and a second rod which is threaded to mate with the actuator rod. The hydrant is assembled by removing the lock nut and screwing the parts together while an operating screw is swung free, then swinging the operating screw into engagement with the second rod. A preferred embodiment permits water samples to be taken from the hydrant.

  • Patent number: 5201340
Abstract: The present innovation pertains to a device with which containers, in which water collects in an unintentional manner, are automatically drained. An outer housing (2, 3), which can be inserted into the bottom of the container, is subdivided by a web (8a) into two chambers, one of which is connected to the interior of the container, and the other of which is connected to the surroundings of the container. The web encloses an opening (20) which connects the two chambers when a valve member (14) has moved away from a seat (8b) enclosing the opening. If the valve member rests on the seat, the chambers are separated from one another, and the interior space of the container is not in connection with the surroundings of the container. The movement of the valve member is controlled by the water level in the chamber which is in connection with the interior space of the container.

  • Patent number: 5201354
Abstract: A feed system with improved preposition is shown and describe wherein a prepositioning stage is located vertically above a feed stage such that movement of a wood product from the prepositioning stage to the feed stage corresponds to movement of the wood product through a transfer path having orientation corresponding to that of the height dimension of the wood product. This prepositioning configuration provides relatively more efficient movement of the wood product along its transfer path from a prepositioning stage to a feed stage as compared to prior methods where the transfer path is horizontal and the wood product moves in a direction corresponding to its relatively greater width dimension. The vertical orientation of the transfer path as provided by a prepositioning stage above a feed stage also allows for more efficient sequencing of mechanical events within the system to further contribute to improved productivity.

  • Patent number: 5201361
Abstract: An improved continuous caster mold having adjustable end walls employs heating mechanisms in the portion of each of the narrow end walls above the level of molten metal contained in the mold to heat that portion of each of the end walls to a temperature more closely approximating the temperature of the end walls below the level of molten metal in the mold. The heating mechanisms tend to lower the temperature differential between the portion of the end wall below the level of molten metal and the portion of the end wall above the level of molten metal. By equalizing the temperature differential in the end wall, the thermal expansion of the end wall is made more uniform to prevent the formation of a gap between the end walls and either of the broad side walls. The improvement is also useful for reducing thermal stresses in molds having fixed, stationary end walls.

Abstract: A method of continuously casting a thin strip by pressing a pair of side walls to both side surfaces of a pair of rotating cooling drums to form a metal bath and rotating said cooling drums so as to cool a molten metal inside the metal bath and to continuously cast the thin strip, comprising the steps of pressing the side walls, which are pre-heated before the start of casting of the thin strip, to the end surface of the rotating cooling drums at a predetermined surface pressure so as to apply deformation corresponding to the shape of the end surfaces of the cooling drums to the side walls, casting under lowered press surface pressure conditions to form a necessary sliding surface required for stable casting, moving the side walls to the positions at which a wear quantity of the sliding surfaces of the side walls reach a target value, and continue casting while maintaining said positions.

  • Patent number: 5201363
Abstract: The method comprises effecting the solidification of the metal in a continuous casting ingot mould constituted by two cooled rolls (2) rotating in opposite directions and disposed in confronting relation so as to define a casting space therebetween, continuously extracting from the ingot mould a solidified steel strip (3), and, below the ingot mould, subjecting the strip to a quenching medium (6) so as to cool it sufficiently rapidly to prevent formation of austenite. This medium may be formed by a quenching bath placed in a container (4) disposed under the rolls (2) and having a bottom provided with an opening (5) for the passage of the solidified strip (3). The quenching medium may also be formed by an inert gas in the liquid state blown onto the product by nozzles. The steel strips obtained are easier to shear and coiled at the output end of the casting line owing to the absence of martensite in the ferritic matrix.

  • Patent number: 5201365
Abstract: The invention consists of a cooling system that can be worn and travel with the person using the cooling system. Flexible inter-communicating containers (such as coils), are adapted to fit body contour and function as heat removers. The containers are incorporated into clothing, or applied directly to the body. Water under a vacuum in the containers boils at low temperature and removes body heat. Vapor generated by the boiling water re-condenses into water in a communicating portable cold container, which is cooled by portable ice packs, or by endothermic chemical reactants. The degree of cooling can be controlled by regulation of the degree of the communication between the the heat remover containers and the cold condenser container. The re-condensed water returns spontaneously to the heat remover containers by force of gravity. The cooling device can be incorporated into any object which forms a direct or an indirect contact with a person using the device, such as medical casts, and cold compresses.

  • Patent number: 5201367
Abstract: A stack comprises plates (1,2,3,4) having a zig-zag profile and defining diverging-converging passages in the flow direction (L) of the first heat-exchange medium. Each plate (1,2,3,4) has in the direction (M) perpendicular to the flow direction (M) of the first medium several rows (10) of equally spaced openings (11) accommodating tubes (11a) for a flow of the second heat-exchange medium. Each plate (1,2,3,4) has an odd number of portions (12,13) whose zig-zag profile is offset with respect to the zig-zag profile of the adjoining portion by one half of the pitch (t) of the zig-zag pattern of the profile. The rotary die set for producing the plates of this stack comprises two die rolls (19,20). The length of the evolution of the shaping surface (21,22) of each roll (19,20) is divided into an even number of portions of the same length. The zig-zag profile of each portion is offset with respect to the zig-zag profiles of the adjoining portions through one half of the pitch of the zig-zag pattern of the profile.

  • Patent number: 5201370
Abstract: A method of fracturing a subterranean formation in a well bore is shown in which a gellable fracturing fluid is first formed by blending together an aqueous fluid, a hydratable polymer, a suitable cross-linking agent for cross-linking the hydratable polymer to form a polymer gel and an enzyme breaker. The cross-linked polymer gel is pumped into the well bore under sufficient pressure to fracture the surrounding formation. The enzyme breaker is allowed to degrade the cross-linked polymer with time to reduce the viscosity of the fluid so that the fluid can be pumped from the formation back to the well surface. The particular enzyme breaker utilized has an activity in the range from about 2.0 to 11.0 and is effective to attack only specific linkages in the cross-linked polymer gel.
