  • Patent number: 5212838
Abstract: A molded plastic cap buckle and adjustment strap are provided for adjusting the circumference of the head band of a cap to adjust the cap to the head of a user. The buckle is secured to one end of the head band of the cap and the adjustment strap is secured at the other end of the head band. The buckle is made from a unitary member having parts hinged together along an elongated axis that lies generally parallel to the longitudinal axis of the adjustment strap. The buckle and strap have cooperating recesses and projections for securing the buckle and strap in selected adjusted position. The recesses and projections are constructed to provide for one-way longitudinal movement of the strap relative to the buckle in one direction when the buckle and strap are assembled to reduce the effective circumference of the head band, but preclude longitudinal movement in the opposite direction.

  • Patent number: 5212848
Abstract: An improved flexible wiping blade for the vacuum pickup squeegee of a floor scrubbing machine. A series of small protuberances with spaces between them are provided at the lower edge of the blade on its surface that leads when the machine moves backward. At that time the reverse flexing of the blade moves the protuberances under the blade and they hold it off the floor, thus allowing any standing water on the floor to move under the squeegee. They do not interfere with normal flexing of the blade under normal down pressure, and they permit its wiping action to be free of streaks when the scrubbing machine moves forward.

  • Patent number: 5212862
Abstract: A method for tightening threaded fasteners to any desired proportion of the way through a torque-angle specification window defined by low and high angle limits and low and high torque limits. The torque rate for the joint is determined from torque and angle measurements taken during tightening and compared to boundary ratios which are determined as the rates of change of torque with respect to angle from a threshold torque to the corners of the specification window. A final target parameter value of either torque or angle is calculated based upon this comparison which is approximately halfway through the specification window along a projection of a torque-angle characteristic curve for the fastener which is determined from the torque rate. Correction factors are also provided for tool overrun depending upon whether torque or angle control is used and a reject rate margin is employed to account for nonlinearities which otherwise may lead to unacceptable assemblies.

  • Patent number: 5212865
Abstract: A multi-purpose tool for inserting tanged or tangless wire inserts in a pre-threaded hole. In the case of a tangless insert, the tool nose passes freely through the internal diameter of the insert until a tool pawl automatically engages a cut out formed in the tangless insert. Once the proper depth of the insert in the parent material has been achieved, the tool stops rotating and is reversed for proper disengagement, the installation being complete. In the case of a tanged insert, the nose of the tool does not pass freely through the insert due to the presence of the tang that is blocking its way. As the tool rotates through the internal diameter of the insert, a ledge formed on the nose portion of the tool forces the insert to wind itself in the threads of the parent material. The pawl used to install the tangless insert is positioned directly behind the nose of the tool and remains inoperable in the retracted position since the insert does not have a cut out provided for it.

  • Patent number: 5212866
Abstract: Disclosed are a method, apparatus and tool for the manufacture of a deep-bed wheel rim from a hollow cylindrical preform. In the method the metal preform is shaped to the deep-bed rim in a single mounting on a single tool of several parts, and the constriction of the middle part of the preform to make the bed is performed with concentric rotation of tool and preform. The side portions of the preform are widened to make the bead flanges by a radial shifting of the axis of rotation of the preform together with a tool part shifting appropriately in the plane perpendicular to the axis of rotation to make the bed and the bead seat. The pressing at least during the widening takes place inwardly in a single radial direction, the direction of the axial shift corresponding to the pressing direction. The invention furthermore relates to an apparatus for the practice of the method. According to the invention, this apparatus is a pressing machine with two spindles which bear a tool in common.

Abstract: An automatic drying apparatus for drying vegetables and the like includes a support having at least three upstanding posts with lateral spaces between the posts for providing clearance for a conveyor extending from the dryer in at least one of three directions. The housing is suspended by a pendulum-type suspension from the support, the housing having an annular bottom wall, a side wall and a top wall with an opening therein. An open top basket is rotatably mounted in the housing, the basket having a cylindrical side wall and a conical bottom wall which is moveable along a vertical axis between a closed position wherein it engages the basket side wall and an open position wherein it is spaced appreciably below the basket side wall so that the contents of the basket can drop out of the basket onto a conveyor. The moving means for moving of basket bottom wall between its two positions are suspended below the basket bottom wall to minimize the height of the apparatus.

  • Patent number: 5212877
Abstract: A running substrate which is coated with a solvent-containing material is conveyed through several sections of a drying unit and is dried with a stream of inert gas which is conveyed counter to the direction of movement of the substrate. The temperature of inert gas is reduced during flow from section to section and the quantity of solvent in the inert gas is maintained slightly below saturation value during the initial stage of the drying operation to thus enhance the surface finish of the coating. The stream of inert gas is circulated along an endless path a portion of which coincides with the path for the substrate, and the inert gas is heated to maximum drying temperature before it enters the downstream end of the path for the substrate.

  • Patent number: 5212879
Abstract: A finger stick device for making a skin incision includes a blade pivot arm having a first end pivotally coupled to a housing and a second end having an upper sloped surface and a lower surface. A blade is affixed to the second end such that its cutting edge extends away from the lower surface. A resilient bias member when actuated traverses the upper surface and depresses the second end of the blade pivot arm, such that the blade exits the housing and incises the skin. The incising operation is complete upon the bias member traversing the sloped upper surface of the blade pivot arm. Also disclosed herein is a method for manufacturing the finger stick device, in which the bias member and blade pivot arm are molded as a monolithic unit. A blade is attached to the blade pivot arm, and the blade and monolithic unit are inserted into the housing. Further disclosed is an embodiment in which the housing is formed of two uniformly shaped halves, which when joined, provide an internal space for the monolithic unit.

Abstract: This invention is directed to an apparatus for packaging a semiconductor flip chip on a substrate by face-down bonding in which coherent light is used to irradiate a bonding head and the substrate, and the light reflected by the bonding head and the substrate form interference patterns. Adjustment of the inclination of the bonding head against the substrate is performed by observation of the interference fringes caused by the interference between the light reflected by the bonding head and the light reflected by the substrate.

Abstract: Threaded pipe sections are connected to form a casing joint having proper sealing positioning at proper makeup torque. This improved connection includes a first pipe section having a standard API triangle mark at a predetermined position on its exterior surface for the proper axial engagement of the pin member with the coupling or box member. The box member is plated with a metal substantially comprising tin. A thread lubricant containing Teflon.TM. is applied to the threads of the pin and/or the threads of the box. The pin member and the box member are helically rotated together up to a minimum of an empirically predetermined torque range. While inexpensive, this improvement provides a simple method to determine visually on the rig floor, or at the pipe rack, whether the joint is properly made up to thereby provide effective gas sealing of the API buttress tapered threaded joint.
