  • Patent number: 5217306
Abstract: A temperature distribution analyzer is disclosed. In the analyzer, a measuring optical fiber is provided so as to extend through a target region in order to analyze the temperature distribution of the region. A LD pumped solid state laser generates pulse light having high energy and supplies the pulse light to one of the terminal portions of an optical fiber. This causes a stimulated-Raman-scattering phenomenon in the optical fiber whereby Raman-scattered light is obtained from the other terminal portion of the excitation optical fiber. An optical filter selects light having a predetermined wavelength from the Raman-scattered light and outputs the selected light. An optical device introduces the output light of the optical filter to one of the terminal portions of the measuring optical fiber and receives Raman-backscattered light generated in the measuring optical fiber through the same terminal portion. A photodetector converts the Raman-backscattered light to an electrical signal.

  • Patent number: 5217324
Abstract: A dynamic breakwater system pumps water from a body of water in response to wave action or underwater currents. A submerged stationary base is fixed to a solid subsurface. A breakwater protrudes upwardly through the surface of the water. Wheels support the breakwater for displacement on the base along a generally horizontal displacement axis. Springs acting against opposing sides of the breakwater urge it to a rest position between two horizontally extreme positions, and wave action and underwater currents against either side of the breakwater produce a reciprocating movement of the breakwater along its displacement axis. A pump pumps water in response to the reciprocating movement. The pump has a large piston spaced from the pump housing by roller assemblies. A door permits access to the pump interior for removal of debris or for repair, and a locking mechanism fixes the breakwater to the base to arrest pumping action for such purposes.

The pier driving assembly includes a pier driving bracket which drives the pier pipes into the ground, a pier head which is placed on the pier pipe after the pipe has been driven to bedrock and the pier driving bracket assembly has been removed, and a loading bracket which gives the final lift to the foundation to make it level. When complete, all that is left in the ground is the pier and the pier head. The pier driving bracket and loading bracket are removed when their use is completed. This assembly allows for easy access to the pier should the building settle again.

  • Patent number: 5217332
Abstract: A high performance drill bit is presented for precision drilling of holes in hard-to-drill materials, such as a carbon fiber reinforced plastic material. The drill is a gun drill type having a pair of flat flutes and a pair of air holes for delivering coolant and/or lubricant. The main feature of the drill is the provision of two pairs of cutting edges formed on the intersecting ridges formed at the leading sides of the flank surfaces with the flute surfaces. At the tip of the drill bit, a pair of primary cutting edges, having a point angle .alpha., is disposed. It is followed by another pair of secondary cutting edges, having a point angle .beta., where .alpha.>.beta.. Physically, this means that the secondary cutting edges are inclined more toward the drill axis than the primary cutting edges. The secondary cutting edge is followed further by another flank surfaces which are even more inclined toward the drill axis.
