  • Patent number: 5369924
Abstract: It is known in structural curtainwall systems to have a series of rafters and purlins supporting glass panes. It known also to provide drainage panels in the supporting elements to drain away any water which seeps past the external surfaces of the glass panes. In this invention, separate panels are formed comprising purlins and sub-frame members and supporting glass panes. These panels will be formed off-site in a factory. The sub-frames of the panels are received directly into channels in the rafters thus enhancing the resistance of the system to leakage particularly where the panels intersect the rafters. The joint between adjacent panels spanning the same pair of rafters is sealed by providing tongue members on the purlins which are resiliently deformable. The biasing of the tongue members provides a seal between adjacent panels. Furthermore, the tongue members form drainage channels to drain water into the drainage channels of the rafters.

Abstract: A duel fuel gas generator (10) is provided with a steam injection system (48) having a bleed-off valve (66) and a steam metering valve which are controlled in concert by a controller (50) to supply steam to a steam manifold (22) for injection into the gas generator at rapidly variable rates independent of the steam supply rate from a boiler (42, FIG. 1). A proportion of the system can be preheated using a steam warm-up flow through the bleed-off valve (66). A further portion of the system can be purged and preheated using compressor delivery air to flow through a steam metering valve (80), a purge valve (74) and a drain valve (94). To control the degree of superheat at the steam manifold (22), water can be injected through a metering valve (90) and a vortex mixer (92), and to purge condensation from a gas fuel manifold (30, FIG. 7) of the gas generator, compressor delivery air can be allowed to flow through the manifold (30 ), a supply line (108) and a purge valve (112) to atmosphere.

Abstract: A variable friction force damper utilizes geometric variations in a sliding surface to vary the frictional force. In particular, variation in thickness of the member on which the sliding surface is formed produces a corresponding variation in the displacement of a compression spring. This variation in spring displacement produces a variation in the compression force exerted by the spring, i.e., the force with which the sliding member is pressed against the sliding surface. This in turn causes a variation in the frictional force which the sliding surface exerts on the sliding member. The result is a variable friction force damper having a variable damping capability which allows a controlled response at variable input levels.

Abstract: Apparatus for an ion engine comprises a three-grid accelerator system with the decelerator grid biased negative of the beam plasma. This arrangement substantially reduces the charge-exchange ion current reaching the accelerator grid at high tank pressures, which minimizes erosion of the accelerator grid due to charge-exchange ion sputtering, known to be the major accelerator grid wear mechanism. An improved method for life testing ion engines is also provided using the disclosed apparatus. In addition, the invention can also be applied in materials processing.

  • Patent number: 5369956
Abstract: An exhaust gas aftertreatment device for internal combustion engines having a catalyzer for the selective catalytic reduction of oxides of nitrogen from exhaust gases of motor vehicle diesel engines, provides overstoichiometric supply of NH.sub.3 or materials releasing NH.sub.3. A first sensor records the NH.sub.3 concentration contained in the exhaust gas and interrupts the supply of the NH.sub.3 quantity when a specified upper threshold value is reached. A second sensor records the NH.sub.3 adsorbed in the catalyzer, by way of which the NH.sub.3 supply is resumed on reaching a specified lower threshold value. Alternatively, only one NH.sub.3 sensor is provided in the exhaust gas aftertreatment device. The NH.sub.3 concentration determined by this single sensor is compared, as the actual value, with a required value corresponding to a specified NH.sub.3 concentration in order to form a correction signal which is used for triggering the metering appliance continuously connected into the gas phase.

Abstract: An air conditioner in which, when a first compressor is being operated and a second compressor is being stopped, liquid refrigerant does not flow into the second compressor even in a state of wet vapor suction, a decrease in lubricating oil in the second compressor or a decline in its concentration are not experienced, and breakage of the second compressor does not occur owing to faulty lubrication when the second compressor is started. In addition, to obtain an air conditioner which does not lapse into a wasteful shortage of cooling and heating capabilities when the air conditioner is not in the state of wet vapor suction, by reliably detecting the presence or absence of the state of wet vapor suction. In the air conditioner, the first compressor and the second compressor are connected together by an equalizing pipe. A bypass passage which connects together a discharge pipe and a suction pipe of the second compressor is provided.

  • Patent number: 5369959
Abstract: A refrigerant recycling system includes a recycled refrigerant tank for storing recycled refrigerant, and first and second valves connected in series between the recycled refrigerant tank and atmosphere. In purging non-condensables from the recycled refrigerant tank to atmosphere, a programmed microcontroller holds the first valve open for exposing the pressure transducer to the pressure in the recycled refrigerant tank, and opens the second valve when the measured pressure exceeds a predetermined pressure for purging non-condensables to atmosphere, holding the second valve open until the measured pressure drops below the predetermined pressure. The pressure checking and purging steps are repeated after a short period, as often as necessary until the measured pressure is less than or equal to the predetermined pressure while the second valve is closed and then, after a longer delay, the system goes through one more pressure check and, if necessary, purging operation.
