Patent number: 5396918Abstract: An improved high volume, straight through, low turbulent flow pressure regulating valve is provided by utilizing a hallow cylindrical valve which is selectively and telescopically disposed over an aligned conforming biscuit around which biscuit and through which valve the fluid flows. The valve does not contact the biscuit so that valve chatter is impossible. Furthermore, the absence of a valve seat or other lip reduces the turbulence introduced into fluid flow within the valve body thereby also increasing flow volume capacity. Movement of the valve is controlled in response to pressure within the valve body by means of rolling diaphragm, which is fluidically communicated to the interior of the valve body. The diaphragm, which acts as a piston, is connected between the valve body and the valve member. Increased pressure within the valve acts against the diaphragm forcing the valve member over the biscuit to reduce flow and pressure. The diaphragm, acting as a piston, acts against a prebiased spring.Type: GrantFiled: November 18, 1993Date of Patent: March 14, 1995Assignee: Agricultural Products, Inc.Inventor: Leland L. Parker

Patent number: 5396924Abstract: A pressure limiting valve with high flow rates, but in particular with a good adaptability to the respective conditions, is constructed so that the control piston and the valve piston are coordinated with separate valve cases, whereby these valve cases are connected to each other by way of a plug-in fitting which can be screwed into the valve case of the valve piston and has on the opposite side a standardized plug connection. In the center of this plug-in fitting is provided a center bore, so that the plug-in fitting which has a corresponding opening or blind hole on both sides permits the pressure medium to flow through. The blind hole in the valve piston itself is again connected via a through-bore to the compensation chamber on the opposite side, whereby the diameter of this through-bore is smaller than that of the blind hole of the control piston.Type: GrantFiled: March 8, 1994Date of Patent: March 14, 1995Assignee: Richard Voss Grubenausbau GmbHInventor: Richard Voss

Patent number: 5396925Abstract: A bi-directional cracking valve that can be selectively opened. Bi-directional cracking valve (10, 70) is formed using an elastomeric membrane (34). Centered within the elastomeric membrane is a slit (36) that remains closed, blocking fluid flow through the device until a differential pressure across the elastomeric membrane exceeds a predefined cracking pressure, sufficient to force fluid through the slit. The elastomeric membrane is an integral part of an elastomeric cylinder (28), which is mounted in a valve carrier (12). The valve carrier includes ports disposed at opposite ends and the ports are adapted to couple to tubing. An operator can selectively enable fluid flow through the device by squeezing side tabs (40, 42) disposed on opposite sides of the elastomeric membrane together, forcing the slit open. A latch (46) is provided to keep the bi-directional cracking valve in an open state.Type: GrantFiled: December 16, 1993Date of Patent: March 14, 1995Assignee: Abbott LaboratoriesInventor: Robert G. Patent number: 5396927Abstract: A self-sealing coupling comprising two coupling parts each having an obturating member which seals automatically when the coupling parts are disconnected, and a ring seal which mates in a fluid tight manner with the corresponding ring seal of the other coupling part when the coupling is engaged. One of the obturating members has a conical elastomeric face seal which is relaxed when the coupling is made and the two obturating members are displaced to one side of the mating ring seals for fluid flow. A tapering annular clearance is formed between the faces of the obturating members when the elastomeric face seal is in a natural relaxed state. The arrangement is such that the conical face seal is flattened by the thrust that reseats the two obturating members so that the tapering annular clearance between it and the flat face of the other obturating member is taken up and fluid between the obturating members is squeezed out to a location upstream of the ring seals.Type: GrantFiled: March 21, 1994Date of Patent: March 14, 1995Assignee: Flight Refuelling LimitedInventor: Francis Marshall

Patent number: 5396957Abstract: Expandable casing portions are provided, such as casing slip joints or expansion joints, on opposite sides of a fracture initiation location to accommodate casing and formation movement during fracturing of a well. The fracture initiation location provided by forming openings through the well casing and then forming fan-shaped slots in the formation surrounding the casing. These fan-shaped slots circumscribe an angle about the axis of the casing substantially greater than the angle circumscribed by the opening itself through which the slot was formed. These techniques are particularly applicable to fracturing of horizontal wells, but are also useful on vertical wells. The expansion joints formed as tubular members having alternating inner and outer annular grooves. In another embodiment, the expansion joints formed by tubular members defining alternating inner and outer spiral grooves therein.Type: GrantFiled: March 4, 1994Date of Patent: March 14, 1995Assignee: Halliburton CompanyInventors: Jim B. Patent number: 5396958Abstract: Improved mud additive compositions are provided which are especially formulated to control hole enlargement due to salt bed erosion during drilling, and to assist in solubilization of deposited salt during well operations. The compositions include a first ingredient such as sodium or potassium ferrocyanide and mixtures thereof, and a second ingredient such as the trisodium salt of nitrilotriacetic acid and alkali metal citrates. The first ingredient is generally present at a level of from about 50-95% by weight in the particulate, dilutable form of the invention, whereas the second ingredient is present at a level of from about 5-50% by weight. The compositions hereof may be added to drilling mud during drilling operations or to fresh water for removing salt depositions.Type: GrantFiled: April 8, 1994Date of Patent: March 14, 1995Assignee: Jacam Chemical Partners, Ltd.Inventor: Najib H. Patent number: 5396960Abstract: A flame extinguishing apparatus cooperates with a flare boom conductor discharge port to vent a stream of combustible gas into the atmosphere. The apparatus includes a nozzle, positioned in and adjacent to the flare boom conductor gas discharge port, directing a shaped stream of a flame impeding fluid toward the discharge port. The fluid stream thus forms a gas penetrable quasi-barrier which extinguishes the flame and concurrently dilutes the vent gas.Type: GrantFiled: April 2, 1993Date of Patent: March 14, 1995Assignee: Texaco Inc.Inventors: Jerry J. Patent number: 5396965Abstract: Improvements in down-hole mud actuated hammers are disclosed. According to its broadest aspect the invention is a down-hole mud actuated hammer for use in a drill string, which includes a housing with an upper end having means for connecting to the drill string. A throat is located within the housing which throat includes a main flow passage to allow high pressure drilling mud to pass therethrough. A piston is provided which is adapted to move axially within the housing means to thereby reciprocate between an up position and a down position. The piston is moved between the up and down position by a minor portion of the high pressure mud which portion passes from the main flow passage into at least one piston actuating chamber. This minor portion of mud is exhausted from the piston actuating chamber to a low pressure region out of the housing without being returned to the main flow passage.Type: GrantFiled: January 23, 1989Date of Patent: March 14, 1995Assignee: NovatekInventors: David R.
