  • Patent number: 5605041
Abstract: An air-fuel ratio control system for an internal combustion engine comprises upstream and downstream O2 sensors arranged in the exhaust system of the engine at respective locations upstream and downstream of a catalytic converter, for detecting concentration of oxygen in exhaust gases from the engine. An ECU sets a control variable having a value proportional to the difference between an output from the downstream O2 sensor and a first predetermined reference value, and compares between an output from the upstream O2 sensor and a second predetermined reference value, to thereby calculate an air-fuel ratio correction coefficient, based on results of comparison and the set control variable. The air-fuel ratio of an air-fuel mixture supplied to the engine is controlled based on the calculated air-fuel ratio correction coefficient.

  • Patent number: 5605042
Abstract: The invention sets forth an arrangement for the aftertreatment of exhaust gases from a compression-ignition internal combustion engine, in which, to improve the operation of a reducing catalytic converter, a reducing agent is injected into the exhaust gas fed to the catalytic converter. Injection is performed by virtue of an electrically controlled metering valve which is combined in a common housing with a control valve. This control valve serves for the controlled introduction of compressed air supplied, in which a quantity of reducing agent made ready by the metering valve is prepared and introduced intermittently into the exhaust gas. This serves, in particular, to avoid urea deposition and clogging in the metering valve and the control valve and for the optimum preparation of the reducing agent introduced.

  • Patent number: 5605048
Abstract: A method of cooling an object with a thermoelectric battery cascade which is based on carrying heat from the object and further from stage to stage with an adjustable regulated direct current applied to the terminals of the battery until a steady-state operation mode is obtained corresponding to the required temperature of the object being cooled. In accordance with the invention transfer of heat removed from the object is effected successively in time in portions from stage to stage with intermediate heat storage on heat accumulators. In order to effect this, the operation of each stage is carried out in active heat removal and thermal switch modes, wherein the duration of the time intervals and values of currents flowing through the stages of the thermobattery for those modes is adjusted in the process of bringing it to the steady-state mode of operation with required values of temperatures of the object being cooled and heat accumulators and with minimum value of electric power consumption.

At least one biasing member is disposed adjacent one end of the worm gear, and preferably both ends of the worm gear, for centering the worm gear with respect to the output gear when subjected to a force below the predetermined reaction force or predetermined torque force.

  • Patent number: 5605072
Abstract: A driven gear (3a), a gear (11a) to a rotary solenoid (15a) and an output drive gear (19a) are mounted to rotate together, preferably as one part turning on a stationary shaft (7a). The driven gear and the output drive gear have disengagement sectors (5a and 20a). Activation of the solenoid turns the driven gear into engagement with a normally turning drive gear (1a). Shortly after the sector on the output gear is cleared, and the load (27) is driven through engagement with driven gear (23a). After one cycle, the detent force of the solenoid positions the sector 5a so that engagement is terminated. Because the rotary solenoid need only move the gears 3a, 11a and 19a, the size of the load is immaterial to the physical requirements for the solenoid and its reliability of operation.

Abstract: A motor vehicle steering column including a longitudinally collapsible mast jacket, a lower mount whereat the mast jacket is supported for vertical pivotal movement, and an upper mount consisting of a pair of stationary rigid strikers and a pair of releasable capsules on the mast jacket each of which receives in plug-in fashion and automatically retains a corresponding one of the strikers. Each of the capsules includes a socket, a plunger bore intersecting the socket, a plunger in the plunger bore, and a plunger spring biasing the plunger toward an extended position partially obstructing the socket. Each striker has a cam at a distal end thereof and an inverted frustoconical body. When the mast jacket is pivoted vertically up, the cams on the strikers shift the plungers inward in the plunger bores.

  • Patent number: 5605077
Abstract: A camshaft includes a first end journal portion and first, second and third intermediate journal portions respectively. The first end journal portion is supported in a bearing hole in an upper end wall of the cylinder head. The first, second and third intermediate journal portions are supported in three bearing holes in the three intermediate bearing bosses in the cylinder head, respectively. The radii of the four bearing holes and of a camshaft inserting opening in a lower end wall of the cylinder head are in a relationship such that the camshaft inserting opening is the largest radii, and each adjacent bearing hole is progressively smaller in size. The smallest radii bearing hole is for the bearing hole for the first end journal portion. The largest radius of an intake cam and an exhaust cam is smaller than the radii of the intermediate bearing holes. Thus, the camshaft can be smoothly inserted through the camshaft inserting opening and hence, can be easily assembled into the cylinder head.
