  • Patent number: 5615520
Abstract: A one-way self closing gate such as may be used in retail stores, airports or libraries is provided with an inclined helical ramp mechanism by which opening of the gate also causes lifting of the gate arm relative to the gate base. When released the gate will tend to close itself under the force of gravity. To augment this gravity force a spring is provided which is compressed as the arm rises relative to the base. So that the gate does not close too quickly a screw presses a nylon slug against the turning shaft of the gate. When the gate is closed a force applied to open the gate in the contrary direction to that intended is resisted by abutment of a generously welded internal stop against a generously welded internal upright. In an alternate form this resistance function in the closed position is performed by an adjacent post positioned to intercept the motion of the moving barrier. In all cases the internal mechanism of the gate is enclosed in a housing to prevent injury to children's fingers.

  • Patent number: 5615528
Abstract: A load bearing structure having a set of uniform voids functions to resolve the forces imposed by developing compression in the material having the voids and minimizing the amount of tension developed in the material. For the voids to have this function, they must be deployed in a particular fashion. The voids are deployed to encompass a particular set of points. The set of points are such that each point in the matrix is spaced an equal distance from twelve and only twelve adjacent points of the matrix. The distance between the points does not matter as long as all are uniformly distanced in accordance with that rule. If the structure is considered to be composed of a closely packed set of hypothetical rhombic dodecahedra (RD) and the four edge vertices of each of those hypothetical RDs is truncated, the result will be a set of cubic voids.

  • Patent number: 5615553
Abstract: A hydraulic circuit has a first PV pump connected to a valve group for powering a plurality of hydraulic mechanisms connected to the group, and a second PF pump connected in the circuit. In the improvement, a hydraulic line extends between the second pump and the valve group and there is a conductor sensing a mechanism load pressure. A valve network directs flow from the second pump to the valve group when the difference between the pressure in the hydraulic line and the load pressure declines below a predetermined value. Such decline "signals" that the mechanisms require more fluid than is available from the first pump alone. A new method for supplementing the flow of a first pump with that of a second pump is also disclosed.

  • Patent number: 5615555
Abstract: A fuel injector for a gas turbine conbustor, the injector operating on gas and liquid fuels selectively. The injector has a central liquid fuel duct and jets, an annular gas duct and gas jets, and an outer annular combustion air duct. Operation on the liquid fuel tends to cause combustion products to be ingested into the gas orifices so impeding efficient gas combustion. The invention provides apertures (17) between the outer air duct and the intermediate gas duct whereby during operation on liquid fuel air bleeds into the gas duct and purges the gas orifices. As an added advantage, in a transition from liquid fuel to gas, the gas pressure is increased to a point where the air bleed is reversed and gas bleeds into the air duct. The pre-mixed gas/air is then emitted from swirlers surrounding the ring of gas jets. More efficient gas combustion results.

Abstract: A free-piston Vuilleumier heat pump in which displacers having a spring-operated resonance system, controls the heating energy and cooling energy outputs by controlling strokes of a hot displacer and a cold displacer. The control of the displacer strokes is performed by controlling the working gas temperature in a hot working space. Furthermore, the control of the displacer strokes may be performed by controlling a motor output while keeping the operation frequency of the motor mounted for at least one of the hot displacer and the cold displacer, in the vicinity of a resonance frequency which is determined by the driving system of the hot displacer and the cold displacer.

  • Patent number: 5615557
Abstract: A cooling apparatus especially for cooling high-temperature-superconducting lectronic components includes a cold gas cooling machine, such as a Stirling machine, thermally connected to a pressure vessel serving as a cold reservoir vessel. The pressure vessel contains a working medium having a triple point in the temperature range from about 60K to about 90K and a critical temperature at least as high as the maximum operating room temperature of the apparatus. The working medium is propane, for example. A cooling surface of the electronic component is thermally connected to the pressure vessel. In the method of operating the apparatus, the electronic component does not require continuous cooling. During a charging or refrigerating phase, the cooling machine freezes the working medium. Then during a useful cooling phase, the cooling machine is switched off and the electronic component is operated while being cooled by the frozen working medium.

  • Patent number: 5615558
Abstract: A device and method for laser cooling of a solid to extremely low temperature is disclosed, the device including an active cooling structure having a high purity surface passivated direct band gap semiconductor crystal of less than about 3 microns thick and a transparent hemispherical body in optical contact with the crystal. The crystal is itself cooled when illuminated with a laser beam tuned to a frequency no greater than the band gap edge frequency of the crystal. Cooling is caused by emission of photons of higher energy than photons entering the crystal, the additional energy being accounted for by process of absorption of thermal phonons from the crystal lattice.

  • Patent number: 5615560
Abstract: An automotive air conditioning system comprises a heat pump type refrigerant circuit charged with a first refrigerant and includes first and second internal heat exchangers disposed within an air conditioning duct and an external heat exchanger located outside the duct. A plurality of electromagnetic valves are selectively operated so that in one operational state the external heat exchanger performs as an evaporator and the second internal heat exchanger performs as a condenser, and such that in another operational state the external heat exchanger and the first internal heat exchanger perform as evaporators and the second internal heat exchanger performs as a condenser. A first pressure equalizing type expansion valve mechanism associated with the external heat exchanger has a P-T characteristic curve wherein a static superheat curve intersects with a saturated first refrigerant vapor curve when the temperature of the first refrigerant immediately upstream of the external heat exchanger is in a low range.

  • Patent number: 5615561
Abstract: A method and system for liquifying natural gas using a cryogenic process is described. The method is well suited for producing high methane purity natural gas which can be used as a vehicle fuel. The invention utilizes residue gas from a cryogenic plant as a natural gas feedstock. The natural gas feedstock is condensed by heat exchange with overhead gas from the demethanizer of the cryogenic plant. In the preferred embodiment of the invention the pressure of the condensed natural gas is reduced to a level at which it can be readily stored and transported by expansion through one or more Joule-Thomson valves.

  • Patent number: 5615565
Abstract: A key with a blade portion which is bitted for actuating the tumbler pins of a cylinder lock has improved cross-sectional strength despite deep cut bittings which extend well into the thickness of the blade. The key is generally flat with upper and lower surfaces and opposite short side edges. The bittings are cut across at least one of the surfaces so as to extend arcuately through the thickness of the blade and one of the side edges. The volume of key blank material which is adjacent the deep cut bittings after the key is cut is substantially more than conventional keys and provides the key blade with increased strength to prevent breakage. The bittings are cut into the key blade by a rotary cutter wheel which is dimensioned to form an arcuate bitting surface rather than a flat surface.

  • Patent number: 5615568
Abstract: In a bender (e.g., press brake), work (plate material) can be bent by a bending tool composed of a pair of punch and die. A position detector (17) mounted on a movable side of the bending tool generates a limit point pulse (ULi) whenever the tool reaches a limit point. A timer (29) measures a time interval between the two limit point pulses (ULi). A time compare discriminate section (31) compares the time interval measured by the time with a reference time interval (TR), and further discriminates the current bending as trial bending when the time interval is longer than the reference time but as an actual bending when shorter than the reference time. Further, an arithmetic section 33 calculates a sum total number of times of the bending and the sum total time period spent in the bendings, separately in both of the trial and actual bendings. The obtained bending data are displayed or recorded to obtain an accurate man-hour in the bending processing.
