Patent number: 5741442Abstract: Optical limiting materials. Methanofullerenes, fulleroids and/or other fullerenes chemically altered for enhanced solubility, in liquid solution, and in solid blends with transparent glass (SiO.sub.2) gels or polymers, or semiconducting (conjugated) polymers, are shown to be useful as optical limiters (optical surge protectors). The nonlinear absorption is tunable such that the energy transmitted through such blends saturates at high input energy per pulse over a wide range of wavelengths from 400-1100 nm by selecting the host material for its absorption wavelength and ability to transfer the absorbed energy into the optical limiting composition dissolved therein. This phenomenon should be generalizable to other compositions than substituted fullerenes.Type: GrantFiled: July 11, 1995Date of Patent: April 21, 1998Assignee: The Regents of the University of CaliforniaInventors: Duncan W. Patent number: 5741445Abstract: A method of forming a light weight, closed-back mirror. The mirror is formed as a monolithic construction by the use of chemical vapor deposition techniques. A first deposition forms sheets of the material, which are machined to the proper size to form reinforcing ribs. A sacrificial mandrel is formed with grooves to receive the ribs in their assembled positions. The upper surface of the mandrel is in proximity to the rear edges of the ribs to form a substantially continuous surface. The mandrel and ribs are then subjected to a chemical vapor deposition process which forms a first coating upon the outer face of the mandrel, forming a back plate and side wall. The mandrel is then turned over, and the base is removed by machining to expose the front edges of the ribs. This process leaves islands of mandrel material between the ribs to form a substantially continuous surface. The mandrel and ribs are then subjected to a chemical vapor deposition process.Type: GrantFiled: February 6, 1996Date of Patent: April 21, 1998Assignee: CVD, IncorporatedInventors: Raymond L. Patent number: 5741450Abstract: A method of and apparatus for molding hollow items using the resin transfer molding technique in such a manner that the resin is more uniformly distributed about and along the molding region of the mold. This is accomplished by installing oppositely spaced grooves in the mold and injecting resin directly into these grooves. Upon such injection, the resin travels along and fills the groove (by taking the path of least resistance) before such resin is squeezed or forced out a minute gap that exists between the molding surfaces and into the molding region of the mold. As such resin is being forcibly injected into the cloths in the mold, a vent permits any air displaced from the cloths by the resin to be released. Such resin injection and mold venting occurs until such time that no more air is vented and instead 100% resin is being discharged from the mold. Upon this occurrence, further resin injection is curtailed and the resin previously injected is allowed to harden and cure.Type: GrantFiled: January 16, 1996Date of Patent: April 21, 1998Assignee: Hudson Products CorporationInventor: Robert C. Patent number: 5741458Abstract: A process for the fabrication of a thermoset water heater tube is described. By shifting to a thermoset rather than a thermoplastic, a much higher heat distortion temperature is achieved when compared to standard thermoplastic materials such as polypropylene, polyethylene, ABS or PVC. The stress crack resistance is also higher as is the dimensional stability. These desirable properties can be achieved by using a lower cost material, in contrast to a more expensive thermoplastic, and solves the problem of water heater tube failure when dry firing conditions are present. The invention utilizes thermoplastic processing conditions, with subsequent crosslinking to form a thermoset. This combines the best features of both types of materials: (1) the ease of thermoplastic processing; combined with (2) the desirable physical properties of a thermoset.Type: GrantFiled: January 19, 1996Date of Patent: April 21, 1998Inventor: William Rowley

Patent number: 5741484Abstract: An inflammatory cytokine is disclosed which has been isolated from cells that have been incubated with a stimulator material. The inflammatory cytokine comprises a protein that is capable of binding to heparin, inducing localized inflammation characterized by polymorphonuclear cell infiltration when administered subcutaneously and inducing in vitro polymorphonuclear cell chemokinesis, while lacking the ability to suppress the activity of the anabolic enzyme lipoprotein lipase, cause the cytotoxicity of cachectin/TNF-sensitive cells, stimulate the blastogenesis of endotoxin-resistant C3H/HeJ thymocytes, or induce the production of cachectin/TNF by primary thioglycollate-elicited mouse macrophage cells. A particular inflammatory cytokine MIP-1 has been isolated and has been found to comprise a peptide doublet of similar molecular weights of about 8,000 daltons, and to show a pI of about 4.6. The doublet has been resolved into its component peptides, MIP-1.alpha. and MIP-1.beta.Type: GrantFiled: June 7, 1995Date of Patent: April 21, 1998Assignee: The Rockefeller UniversityInventors: Anthony Cerami, Bruce Beutler, Stephen D. Patent number: 5741486Abstract: The present invention provides retroviral vectors comprising direct repeats flanking a sequence that is desired to be deleted upon reverse transcription in a host cell. In a preferred embodiment the sequence that is desired to be deleted is the retroviral cis-acting encapsidation sequence (E) essential for virus production in helper cells. In gene therapy embodiments, the E sequence is deleted upon reverse transcription in target cells, thus preventing spread of retroviral vectors to non-target cells in the event of infection with replication competent viruses. The retroviral vectors of the present invention thus provide safe vectors for gene therapy.Type: GrantFiled: June 6, 1995Date of Patent: April 21, 1998Assignee: Research Corporation Technologies, Inc.Inventors: Vinay K.
