    Abstract: A method and apparatus for processing a magnetic transducer which uses gallium ion beam milling to precisely define pole tip widths of the magnetic transducer. The gallium ion beam may be defocused to improve definition of the region which is damaged by gallium ion implantation. The precision pole tip widths provide a transducer that may record correspondingly precise track widths on a magnetic storage medium, such as a rotating disk. Subsequent to the ion milling process, the invention restores the magnetically conductive properties of the pole tip region, which may be degraded as a result of the ion milling process, by means of a lapping process.

    Abstract: Method for expanding tubular members, such as U-shaped heat transfer tubes having ends thereof located in the confined space adjacent the curved sides of the bowl-shaped lower plenum of a typical nuclear steam generator. The apparatus includes an elongate mandrel having a flow channel therethrough in communication with a resilient tubular bladder surrounding the mandrel. The bladder is flexible about its longitudinal axis due to the ribbed construction of the wall thereof. The mandrel includes a plurality of segments, adjacent ones of the segments interconnected by a ball-and-socket joint therebetween, so that the segments swivel about respective ones of the ball-and-socket joints. Thus, the mandrel and the expandable bladder connected thereto are flexible rather than rigid in order to be easily inserted into the tube ends located adjacent the curved sides of the bowl-shaped plenum and in order to easily traverse the upper U-bend portion of the tube.

    Abstract: A method and apparatus for applying travelers to a ring of a fiber processing machine. A traveler applicator includes a traveler rail on which travelers are urged by a pusher towards a reciprocating traveler tooth. Actuation of a trigger causes the traveler tooth to engage a traveler from the traveler rail and to advance it outwardly for attachment to a ring. Release of the trigger causes the tooth to retract and allows clearance between the tooth and the next traveler positioned on the traveler rail for dispensing. Upon full retraction of the tooth, the tooth advances inwardly to engage the next traveler on the traveler rail. A spring-biased engagement member contacts the traveler to secure it on the tooth. A cartridge having a plurality of traveler-holding rails about its periphery feeds travelers to the traveler rail. Once a cartridge rail is depleted of travelers, the cartridge is rotated such that the next rail having travelers is presented to the traveler rail for dispensing.

The transition section separates an upper tank portion from a lower tank portion, preferably has a non-corrugated side wall, and includes a sewage inlet opening and a sewage outlet opening through its side wall.

Then a machining operation is performed along the inner wall to remove the deformed portion of the inner wall. The bearing is then removed from the fixture and the machined portion of the wall retracts, forming at least one recess.

    Abstract: A cutting device angularly and removably attached to a heat-sealed edge of a food-contained polybag. The cutting device includes two integrally molded first and second parts. The first part is so formed that it has a tongue portion with two fixing pins raised from two outer comers of the tongue portion. A razor having a slant edge is clamped in locating grooves formed on top of the two fixing pins. The second part is formed with pin holes and a razor receiving groove corresponding to the fixing pins and the clamped razor. In use the cutting device is first positioned on the heat-sealed edge by folding the first part to the second part. Depressing the tongue portion of the first part will cause the razor to cut into the razor receiving groove on the second part and the polybag. Moving the cutting device sidewardly causes the razor to cut open the heat-sealed edge of the polybag.

    Abstract: New application of biomechanical principles of elastic stretch and braking force are combined in an athletic shoe. The new design implements the concepts by placing the heel of the shoe inner sole significantly lower than the ball of the foot and toes. Tests show that an inner sole reverse slope of about 31/2.degree. provides an optimum significant improvement in jumping in particular. The reverse slope is substantially flat from the center of pressure beneath the heel to the five centers of pressure beneath the ball of the foot. The flat slope provides more assurance that the weight of the user will be applied to the shoe through the centers of pressure in preference to locations under the arch. The invention is applicable to "explosive" movement sports such as basketball, track and field, volleyball, tennis and soccer. Preferably the shoes are constructed with formed or curved heels to retain the feet properly positioned in the shoes by preventing the feet from sliding too far back within the shoes.

    Abstract: A radial garden support system for climbing plants and non-climbing plants that can be used directly on the ground, with or without planting containers, and can also be used on a deck or patio with planting containers. Adjustable upper and lower radial arms support the climbing surface to meet the vertical needs of the climbing plants chosen. Leveling screws on the lower radial arms maintain proper orientation of the system on uneven ground. Triangular planting containers fit between the lower radial arms defining the growing area and resulting in less weeds and decreased quantities of water and fertilizer. Removable greenhouse tents fit within each planting container and enable early plantings, therefore increasing the growing season. A watering collar introduces water directly to the roots of the plants and enables introduction of plant food to the roots minimizing water and plant food requirements.

The pivot connects with an upwardly-extending spar of the car body to form a hinge. The hinge between the car body and the windowpane has an adhesive layer disposed on a portion of the vent window adjacent the hinge area and an elastic casting compound secured to the vent window by the adhesive layer. A carrier bracket is partially embedded in the elastic casting and a mounting screw is seated in the casting compound and disposed through a hole in the carrier bracket for connection to the hinge of the car body. The carrier bracket can bend or flex under stress so that the mounting screw can be lifted off the surface of the casting compound.

The swing movement control mechanism comprises a swing movement control plate shiftable along the crank arm so that the connecting arm which is also pivoted on the swing movement control plate can be connected to a gate having a desired swing or so-called "throw".

    Abstract: A reinforcing channel-shaped carrier for a sealing, trimming or guiding strip is made of metal and provided with slots of several different types. Slots of a first type extend across the base of the carrier and for short distances into the side walls and facilitate bending about an axis parallel to the base and perpendicular to the length of the channel. Slots of a second type are positioned in the side walls and facilitate bending about an axis perpendicular to the plane of the base. The latter slots are of two different forms. Slots of one form are shorter than those of the other form. This increases the stiffness of the carrier. The carrier is produced by slitting a flat metal blank and then rolling it along stretch paths to cause it to be thinned-down and expanded lengthwise to convert the slits into slots. The carrier is advantageously used in a sealing, trimming or guiding strip in closed loop form ready for fitting to a vehicle door opening.

If desired, only posts supporting the top step may be placed upon a stable surface and the remaining posts, after insertion into their respective openings, may remain hanging above the stable surface. Concrete may be poured on the stable surface to embed each of the posts therein.
