  • Patent number: 5944304
Abstract: An separating and staging machine is disclosed which is used in conjunction with high speed document processing apparatus in which a succession of collations of insert material moving along an insert material feed path to an insert location are inserted into envelopes fed to the insert location. The machine of the present invention feeds envelopes from a storage hopper to a feed path which is long enough to accommodate a plurality of staging locations at which individual envelopes are maintained until one is fed to the insert location, after which the envelopes at each staging location are advanced to the next staging location, and a new envelope is fed from the storage hopper to the first of the staging locations. With this arrangement the distance between successive envelopes moving through the staging locations is approximately equal to the distance between successive collations moving along the insert material feed path, thereby increasing the rate at which envelopes can be fed to the insert location.

  • Patent number: 5944316
Abstract: A method for playing a card game having wagering opportunities. Wagering selections are made from among a group of possible playing card outcomes, with the winning outcome selected using a specialized die. After all bets have been placed, a single playing card is dealt face down at each of certain pre-identified locations. Indicia on each of the faces of the die collectively correspond to each of the pre-identified locations. The indicia observed on the up-turned face of the die after its throwing or tumbling determines the location at which the playing card is turned over. The turned-over card is considered to be the "winning" playing card, and its value is used to settle all bets prior to initiation of a new game.

  • Patent number: 5944317
Abstract: This invention is an automatic gunnery system, responsive to airborne acoustic shock waves produced by a projectile passing through a target area. The invention relates specifically to the "hit" location of the said projectile for the condition when the flight path of the projectile is not perpendicular to the target area. Two pairs of concentric curved elongated acoustic energy conductors (curved sensor rods) are located adjacent to one side of said target area with acoustic transducers attached to the end portions thereof. Said transducers produce an electrical signal when a shock wave from the projectile reaches them through said energy conductors. Electrical signals from the transducers are connected to electronic circuitry and a calculating computer which calculates the intersection of two circles and determines the location of each "hit" on or near the target with each "hit" registered on a graphical display means.

  • Patent number: 5944324
Abstract: Shaped articles made of brittle material having a low coefficient of thermal expansion, for example designed as glass or glass-ceramic plates, are typically encapsulated with a holding frame made of plastic, which is produced by directly encapsulating the edges of the shaped article with plastic by injection moulding. In order to avoid stress concentrations in the shaped article, which inevitably form as a consequence of the differences in thermal expansion and the material-dependent shrinkage behaviour, according to the invention shrinkage-absorbing elements are embedded between the holding frame and the shaped article, which elements additionally ensure a permanently elastic bearing of the shaped articles when used in practice and provide sufficient sealing during use.

Abstract: A safety belt tensioner is provided for pulling a buckle part to tighten a safety belt system about an occupant. The tensioner includes a flexible member or cable having a first loop connected to the buckle part which pulls the buckle part when it is shortened, as by actuation of a power operated device such as a piston-cylinder device. To shorten the piston stroke while achieving the necessary displacement of the buckle part, the flexible member is provided with a second loop connected to the piston about a turning member thereof with one end of an anchored half of the second loop secured to a stationary part of the pretensioner, and the other loop half extending from the cylinder and connected to the portion of the flexible cable member for the buckle part. This provides about a 1:1 ratio between the length of piston travel and downward travel of the buckle part to minimize the piston travel to allow the length of the cylinder to be shorter for providing a more compact pretensioner.
