  • Patent number: 5996277
Abstract: A carrousel (2) has a plurality of spaced apart holders (50) mounted on its outer periphery. Each holder receives a plant unit (90) including a plant with foliage (92) and a root/soil mass (94) received in a container (96). As the carrousel (2) turns, a cam (70) carried by each holder (50) engages a ramp (78) to cause the holder (50) to grip the container (96). The holder (50) then conveys the plant unit (90) through first and second cutting stations (4, 18) at which top and side portions of the foliage (92), respectively, are trimmed. The trimming is accomplished by flail cutters (6, 20, 21). At the side cutting station (18), the plant unit (90) moves between a pair of cutters (20, 21), and a rubber tire (84) rotates the holder (50) and plant unit (90) to provide cutting all the way around the plant unit (90). After exiting the second station (18), the holder (50) releases its grip on the plant unit (90).

  • Patent number: 5996292
Abstract: Disclosed is a shutter system and its panels in which at least one panel is formed of corrugations, and in which the subject panel is perforated. Ideally, the perforation is employed in a panel having an isosceles trapezoidal rib, with the perforations running the full length of the face of the rib. The adjacent panels are secured by a wide variety of means often implying a keyhole slot at the top and the bottom of each panel to engage a fastening means which is secured to the structure being covered. Different mountings including direct mountings, of course, are contemplated. The panels, whether perforated or not, are formed from essentially the same material and as a consequence thermal expansion and contraction between adjacent panels is accommodated by the mutual expansion and contraction of each, thereby requiring only accommodation of the shutter system with regard to the opening in the dwelling which it closes.

  • Patent number: 5996300
Abstract: An assembly including rolled shingle roofing material that can be easily installed on a roof and a special handling tool. The tool reduces the strain of carrying the roofing material and of raising to the roof. The roofing material includes a membrane attached by pressure-sensitive adhesive to a plurality of standard flat roofing shingles so as to create a continuous array of shingles which can be formed into a roll or rolled onto a spool. This membrane also serves as a release sheet to prevent thermally-activated adhesive present on the shingles from causing them to stick together in the roll. Alternately, roofing material pre-cut with slots to resemble shingles is rolled together with a release sheet placed on the bottom of the material so as to isolate a thermally-activated adhesive applied thereto from other surfaces. In the assembly, either type of roofing material can be used with the special handling tool.

Abstract: A plurality of containers on which untightened threaded caps are deposited are transported in a circular path synchronously with a cap tightening device for each container. The devices have a substantial vertical reciprocable non-rotatable shaft on which a cylindrical member is rotatable and a cylindrical housing is mounted to and is axially adjustable on the member. A spool of magnetic metal is rotatable on the shaft and is adapted for engaging a cap to turn and tighten it. Magnetizable and magnetized elements are arranged with the housing concentrically to the spool. While being transported the housings of the devices engage a stationary driver which turns the housings consecutively so the spools turn by virtue of magnetic coupling between the magnetic elements and the spool.

Abstract: A tension adjusting device for a packing machine using plastic film includes a shaft with a plastic film roll mounted thereto which is pressed by a press member. An axle extends centrally from the press member and is connected to a plate which extends radially and outwardly from a first rotatable rod. The shaft has an end member with which a belt is engaged which has a first end fixedly connected to a first fixed position. A first gear is fixedly connected to the first rotatable rod and a second rotatable rod is located in parallel with the first rotatable rod with a second gear connected to the second rotatable rod and engaged with the first gear. A third gear is connected to the second rotatable rod and has a chain engaged therewith which has one end thereof fixedly connected to a second fixed position and the other end thereof connected to a second end of the belt via a spring so that when the third gear is rotated, the belt is loosened or tightened.

  • Patent number: 5996314
Abstract: A method and apparatus automatically process currency documents. A stack of loose bank documents are placed on a feeder having a feeder arm which pushes the documents toward a continuous vacuum belt. The feeder arm is controlled by a lever arm connected to a potentiometer. The vacuum belt pulls documents from the stack, and moves the documents past a vacuum separator head and to a transport conveyor. The vacuum belt and the vacuum separator head are connected to the same vacuum supply. The transport conveyor moves the documents through inspection and sorting stations, and to various stacking units which stack the documents on platens. A strapping tape is curved to bend in a direction transverse to its length, and then a terminal end portion of the strapping tape is pushed through connected channels to direct the terminal end portion around three sides of a stack of the documents.

  • Patent number: 5996315
Abstract: A gantry film wrapping system and method useable for wrapping film about an elongated load. The system includes an overhead frame with first and second lateral support members for supporting opposing end portions of a carriage, which is reciprocatably translatable back and forth along the first and second lateral support members. A film wrapping apparatus having a rotary arm is coupled to the carriage, and a film wrapping carriage is coupled to a dependent member extending from an end portion of the rotary arm. The rotary arm and film wrapping carriage are rotatable in approximately 180 degree rotational increments between and during back and forth translations of the carriage along the first and second lateral support members of the overhead frame, wherein the film wrapping carriage is orbital in a substantially oval orbit about an elongated load disposed below the overhead frame.

  • Patent number: 5996316
Abstract: A system and method for order packing forms a mixed pallet or a mixed multi-pack. In this system, a first embodiment utilizes a high volume module, a low volume module, a sorting and packing module, a prepackage module and a mixed palletizer module for picking, sorting, packaging and palletizing articles. In a second embodiment of the present invention, a bulk load can be fed via a carrousel to a bank of elevators. A transfer device will load different levels of the elevators which can then be moved adjacent a discharge conveyor. A lane is provided in this discharge conveyor for each of the elevators in the bank of elevators. The different levels of the elevators are positioned adjacent the lanes and can discharge articles onto the conveyor in order to form groups of the same or different types of articles. Many different types of articles including beverage containers such as cans, bottles or beverage boxes can use this system.

Abstract: Method and device for manufacturing hinge-lid packets for cigarettes from individual, prefabricated blanks (11) which are delivered as piles (10) of blanks. Before being transferred to a packaging machine, each pile (10) of blanks is laterally aligned in respect of the exact relative position of the blanks (11), by aligning devices (21, 25, 27, 28) acting on all the upright side faces of the pile (10) of blanks. A separate aligning member, namely a slide (37) serves to align a lower, incorrectly positioned blank (11). This slide is effective in the region of a residual pile of the pile (10) of blanks, namely by raising a predominant upper partial pile.

  • Patent number: 5996323
Abstract: A modular disc cutterbar utilizes self-contained cutter modules clamped between alternating spacer modules by fasteners engaged with the spacer modules. To resist bending moments in the cutterbar, selected fasteners can have a length to span more than one cutter module. The drive mechanism is also of a modular construction including a symmetrical, reversible sealed drive apparatus within each cutter module and a transfer shaft passing through each interstitial spacer module to interconnect each cutter module drive mechanism. The drive apparatus incorporates an oil slinger to keep the remote seals lubricated. The rock guard for each cutter module is mounted on the adjacent spacer modules, while the skid shoe mounting is simplified. A crop mover mounted on each disc member above the cutting knife improves the transfer of severed crop material.
